As I started reading this book, I naturally compared it to Joseph Boyden (Three Day Road, Through Black Spruce, and my favourite --- Born with a Tooth), whose books have been like a door opening for me. I am a huge fan of Joseph Boyden, and I come from Northern Ontario, and so I was really hoping for a story with teeth. I found something unexpected. I was completely lost in this story; this young boy; his wounded life and family.If I had known it was a hockey story at the outset, I may not have read it - but as it turns out, hockey is a metaphor for much that is happening in young Saul's life, and an opportunity for beautiful prose. It is both escape and trap; curse and salvation; a divine gift and a path. Hockey was a huge part of my family's life as I was growing up. My brothers played; everyone played. Still, as I read this story, I realized that I did not really see the whole picture of hockey in Northern Ontario. Sure, my town was completely multi-cultural - people from all over Europe and the world - came there to work the mines and lumber camps, and even so, this book helped me to realize that there was probably still a dividing line in many areas, and yes in hockey, that I was oblivious to.But this book is much more than a story about hockey and redemption. The author paints a heart-wrenching story about the residential school system, without making it overly sentimental. I found that the story was not predictable, and I was still surprised and completely enthralled right to the last page.The mystical moments were beautifully blended with reality,to make a remarkable book about a life's journey, that still leaves room for hope.

Despite the terrifying efforts of Sister Ignacia to disinfect or bleach out his native heritage, Saul Indian Horse clings to his essential self. Despite appalling abuse and casual racism Richard Wagamese's remarkable hero endures. Indian Horse is Saul's story from early years with a nuclear family, through an orphanage work house, and the discovery of a brilliant gift. Adulthood sees this talent disdained and diminished by racism. Unwanted it withers like grapes unpicked. Potential atrophies; promise is unrealized.We first meet Saul drying out in a clinic, exhausted by failure and worn down by six weeks of group therapy. His story though begins at age six with a family living a traditional native existence--their only threat the arrogance of whites who so despise Ojibway people as to abduct children, tearing families apart. The scenes of native life, and Saul's relationship with his grandmother are especially moving. They are in stark contrast to life in a Catholic reserve school. Priests and nuns epitomize the barbarism they claim to expunge from native Canadians. They behave with appalling cruelty. Sadly they are not an aberration but a microcosm of the greater world.Saul's love and his gift for the game of hockey is beautifully realized and told. Shamanistic visions in the natural world are linked to Saul's natural athleticism. The magical and the personal gift are one. Ironically as Indian Horse's skills flourish, his teammates want them to be used to bring the Moose out of their segregated reserve world. They want to display them to the white man. They wish to preen. To show him they belong. The hatred they encounter is stunning, to both themselves and the reader. It will sear your soul. Sadly, but unsurprisingly Saul Indian Horse succumbs to the pressure. He stops playing his game and plays theirs. A tragic mistake. What was beautiful and separate is now sullied.Wagmese's gifts as storyteller are as impressive as Saul's athleticism. Indian Horse is a disturbing book but it is not at all a depressing one. The author infuses it with a spirit (one is tempted to say Great Spirit) that is unflinching, but appreciative as well. Saul Indian Horse's greatest talent was not hockey. It was never mystical vision nor even the ability to endure. Saul Indian Horse has not become like his abusers. If he has harmed anyone it is only himself. And he is not as alone as he thinks. The recounting of the devolution into alcoholism and the journey back is absolute stunning, as powerful as anything I have read in years. Wagamese is a magnificent story-teller. Powerful and compassionate.Happily, through all of this tribulation, they have not "remove[d] the Indian". He is bruised but not broken. He is not as alone as he thought. Saul Indian Horse has lost a step or two and never realized his potential. Yet life and the game remain beautiful still.

I recently read 'Medicine Walk' by Wagamese and it was so good that I rushed to read 'Indian Horse', another book of his. It was no disappointment. The writing soars and the story is one that evolves over time and speaks to generations of Native American and Native Alaskan children who have spent their childhoods in boarding schools.As the novel opens, Saul Indian Horse is in a rehabilitation center for treatment of his alcoholism. He has hit bottom and his sponsor has asked him to tell his story. Saul is reluctant to share but, with time, and with a visit to his roots, the reader gradually learns his history.Saul's great passion was ice hockey and he was so good at it that he made the NHL. He loved the game, the way it let him escape the poison in his mind, and he loved the camaraderie of the team. Soon, after joining the major league, he finds that he is feeling more rage and anger than enjoyment. He decides to leave the team just as his teammates and coach have decided to kick him out. Saul wanders from bar to bar, drink to drink, until he is so down and out that his life is without meaning. What happened to this man with the passion for the game, the lust to play hockey and soar with the sport?The answer to Saul's descent lies in the narrative he tells to his sponsor once he returns to rehab after visiting his now crumbled boarding school, the places he lived as a youth, and his renewed connection to his Ojibway heritage. To say any more would be to provide spoilers. I highly recommend this amazing book that is the story of one man but is also representative of a whole generation of Native American children. It is an amazing book with insight and understanding of those who are culturally outcast by mainstream society. Saul's story is one that will lift your heart and wet your eyes. It is a book to cherish and remember long after the last page is read.

I was lucky enough to take 2D design from Professor Mantle about 6 years ago. He wrote this book to cover what he wanted to teach in his class but could not find a book that covered it all in the right way. He did not require us to buy the book but instead provided us with all of the material as hand outs. By the middle of the semester, I realized that this information was priceless and I needed the book as a personal reference book. I actually understood color theory and color wheels for the first time ever! As an artist, I've used this information pretty much daily since then. And now that I am teaching, I am going to use this book as a reference for my classes. (I'm even hoping I can get the school to order a class set.)This is the best book I have found for really learning color theory.

I've wanted to learn art theory since I started taking pastel lessons and began to realize creating pleasing art is not just a matter of slapping some colored mefium or graphite on a paper. But I had no idea where to start. I bought one book, but it was all print with just a few very vague sketches to illustrate the concepts. While I don't mind learning physics concepts from books with ink sketches and diagrams, I need more visual demonstrations for art concepts. I took a wild chance on this book (A Visual Guide to Classical Art Theory by Eric Mantle), and it is *exactly* what I need! I highly recommend it to all art students and practitioners.

I am two thirds the book and can already say I love it. as promised, the book is very visual. Even the text is very brief, just what m needs to be said. The best part of the book is the visuals for color theory. This in itself made the book worth it.

After reading several books （about 20) about drawing, it's the most helpful. Very solid and practical knowledge for a serious art learner, like me, who did not learn drawing when I was young.

The story pulled me in and I'm looking forward to where this goes with the MC.

I loved the epic scale of the story and the pay off after the harsh beginning for our main character. The beginning was a bit of a slog but understandable for the lesson it was trying to teach to the MC. I loved that this book focused on Amazons, essentially what we all love about characters like Wonder Woman and built on those fetishes, the cliffhanger was HUGE and I can’t wait for more!This is a promising new series.

Great book to overall thought the beginning was a bit weak. I would also love if there was anal ;). I’m looking forward for the sequel, and I hope it comes out as soon as possible.

I do not recommend getting this as a kindle book. There is something wrong with the book. You can't scroll through the whole book. When you come to the end of chapters it stops. When you click the links for the chapters, they don't work. When you try to click on the page numbers, it just returns to the page you were on. All my other kindle books work perfectly. There is something wrong with this one that it it does not function correctly. I reported the problem and was sent a set of instructions to delete the kindle app and reinstall. I did this. All the other books continued to work perfectly and this one did the same as before. The book itself on kindle has to be defective or something.

This is one of the best devotional books I have encountered ever! Though it is written simply and each entry is short, it packs a spiritual wallop unlike most devotional books. The short volume includes scripture, introspective questions, and prayer — all in a simple design based on the Daily Office — packaged for 40 days. The book has caused me to begin journaling again — surely one of the best best spiritual disciplines for introspection and self-improvement. The author, Peter Scazzero, was truly inspired to write this book which should appeal to a broad spectrum of readers. It is a deceptively simple, but powerful Christian book. I highly recommend it.

This is NOT a review of the book content. The book itself is wonderful, and I am truly enjoying my paper copy. This is a review of the KINDLE format. I have tried purchasing this book twice for my Kindle and both times the file was defective. On both my Kindle Paperwhite and my iPhone Kindle app the file included the introduction only. If I tried to "turn the page" past the end of the intro, it skipped to the "Before you go, please review this product" and showed me at 100% finished. When I went to the TOC and clicked on Week One, it went to the last page of the introduction and sat there. I deleted the book and re-downloaded it. Same thing. I returned the book and re-purchased it. Same thing. HOWEVER, when I viewed it on my computer Cloud Reader it was fine. So buyer beware. At least as of today's date, the Kindle file does not work.

I can't say enough about this book...Peter Scazzero's Emotionally Healthy Spiritually was given to me when I was walking into a terribly difficult season- I poured over that book 3 times- it has been my life line. I ordered this Day by Day- to give me guidance as I make my own journey through "the wall" - It's set up to keep you focused (2 times a day) on making your way through a painful season. I find it reminds me, in a concise way, of lessons from the 1st book (Emotionally Healthy Spiritually) and keeps me focused on moving forward. I highly recommend it and have ordered a second copy (along with another copy of the book Emotionally Healthy Spiritually) to give to a friend going through a tough time-

This book is a fabulous way to begin spending intentional time with God each day. It is written with the understanding that emotional health informs spiritual health, and vice versa. This devotional book accompanies the book "Emotionally Healthy Spirituality" and is a good way to work through the concepts discussed in that book.It draws upon the historical understanding of the disciplines of silence and solitude in order to seek God's presence more fully, but is written with a modern audience in mind. It avoids the traps of legalism, but encourages your walk with God through short Scriptural readings and devotions. The main value for me, though, was just in having a structure to go to that enabled my time with God. I wish it had been longer! But the author gives alternative resources to use when you're done with his book. I'd highly recommend this for anyone who wants to be honest with God and wants to be healthy emotionally as well as spiritually.

I enjoyed a new way of spending time with the Lord, reading the Bible, reflecting on the devotion and specifically praying to grow closer to the Lord.However, I had a little difficulty in progressing with the readings. When I tried going further than the last page of Weeks 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 on my phone, the pages would not advance. I was fortunate to have more than one reading device. If I read on a different device, the phone would catch up with the other device. But on its own, the phone refused to budge from blank pages.I am blessed to have witnessed Peter Scazzero's transformation through his writing and develop my own way through his teaching.

It is very good .... Sat and Sun. readings are shorter which is nice.It is easy to read, but it takes thought to really ponder and think through the meaning ... which is good.If you want to be challenged, this is for you.

Too many of us are running around like spiritual infants but expecting to be treated as spiritually mature adults. I've loved the past two additions of "Where do Steam Trains Sleep at Night" and "Where do Diggers Sleep at Night," but I've just found this version to be a bit too repetitive - the author uses a lot of the same phrases that she's used in past books, so it didn't really add anything too new or exciting, besides getting to see different pictures of planes - (which even that, my son isn't too interested in.) It's never a choice book for my 2 year old. He never wants to read it, but will pull out "Where do Diggers Sleep at Night" every time!

We love the other books (Where do diggers sleep at night? and Where do stream trains sleep at night?) but I found this book difficult to read. The previous books were read effortlessly for an enjoyable experience but this book takes a lot of concentration. The pictures and story are great but because of the wording it's just not up to par with the others. It's not one anyone in our family usually reaches for.

A wonderful addition to the "Where do ... sleep at night?" books!! My 2 little boys love their planes and flying them all over the house, so they really like hearing about how all of them go to bed (which helps me get them into bed!). And the rhyme is just fun to read, I can get the boys to bounce along with my cadence.

My 3 year old daughter loves this book! I will say we don’t have any of the other books of this series. I know some people had mentioned in the reviews they preferred others. But we’re very very happy with this one. It’s hard to find books that incorporate airplanes for Little kids. She’s really interested in airplanes and requests to be read this 2-3 times a week (we have a large collection of books and read daily).

My 4yo daughter loves this book. I only gave it 4 stars because my daughter asked at the end of the story where airplanes sleep. Seems like if that is the title, it should be answered. lol Silly I know!!

My son loved Where Do Diggers Sleep at Night? since I first read it to him as a toddler, and he super loves planes, so of course I had to get this! Yes, it's pretty much the same thing, but it's a formula that works and is enjoyable enough, so we are both happy. His little sister (now age 2) loves it too!

My son loves airplanes. He also loves Where Do Diggers Sleep At Night. I pre-ordered this book for him. He loves this book! There is also a little mouse to find in every picture. I would definitely recommend!

In this series you know what you're going to get. This is more of the same. Our son loves calling out the different types of airplanes, and it's a quick read in the pre-bedtime session!

Jackson Crawford earned his Ph.D. in Scandinavian Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and an M.A. in linguistics from the University of Georgia. He has taught Norse mythology, the Old Norse language, and the history of the Scandinavian languages at the University of California, Los Angeles. His poems in English and Norwegian have appeared in several journals.

There's a difference... actually, there's an abyss between a translation and a true, high quality social localization. That means conveying the work in a way it respects the original context and makes it available to a foreign audience in the right context. That's not easy. But the reader can sense when reading a mere translation or a true localization. Mr. Crawford has given us the context of the Edda in a language we can truly feel and visualize the Edda in its full wonder.

the philological skills of the author are evident in this careful translation. No pretender to the throne, Dr. Crawford brings to bear all the necessary historical linguistics, consummate mastery of the entire Norse corpus, and shrew literary judgement to produce a more authentic experience of the style and rhetoric of the Poetic Edda than has ever been rendered in English. While translation of poetry can never truly avoid doing violence and injustice to the source material, this translation injures least.

While the actual translation of the original Old Norse poetry is superb, skillfully capturing the rhythmic meter of the ancient Skaldic poetry, the bonus features such as the engrossing, comprehensive introduction to Viking society, as well as Dr. Crawford's whimsical "Cowboy Havamal" help to bring these venerable texts to life.

I really enjoyed Jackson Crawford's version of The Poetic Edda. I came to it after having read a few books about the history of the Vikings, and was ready to learn a little more about their literature, mythology, and way of thinking. Crawford's translation is clear and modern, and his introductions to the various poems in the work are helpful for people who, like myself, are new to the subject. I was fascinated by this book and you will be too.

As a huge fan of Norse mythology, I have read several translations of The Poetic Edda and I must say, this one is–hands down–the best translation I have read and now, one of my favorite books.While I respect some other translations, I find the ones that I have read to be often inconsistent in style, and with difficult and odd word choice, which makes the reading of those translations a bit challenging (but not in a good way).This is not the case with Crawford’s Edda. I read this book and never felt more connected to the stories of the gods and heroes. The introduction is clear and really gives a nice background to the poems, and why they were translated the way they are in the book. It also gives a nice understanding about the history, as well as the Vikings and their culture which is a huge part of the poems and their background. The language throughout is contemporary and polished, and the poems are translated and written so beautifully! The poems can easily take the reader into a world of magic and myth, heroes and sagas with such beautiful writing. Also, don’t miss out on the the excellent bonus of this book, which is the Cowboy Havamal- that on its own deserves a 5-star review.Crawford did a fantastic job finally bringing the Poetic Edda into the 21st century with this flawless translation. If you’re into Vikings/ Norse Mythology/ history or books in general: don’t miss out on this one!(btw, I bought this book as gifts to many family and friends and they all love it!)

I really enjoy this book, and have read it more than once already. Dr. Crawford is one of the world's finest scholars of Old Norse.It is not, however, a general interest book. I doubt that someone with no interest in the Norse Gods and heroes would be very interested. If you are unsure, watch a few of Dr. Jackson Crawford's Youtube videos, and you'll know whether you want this book or not.(As with salty Dutch licorice, you'll probably love it or hate it.)

Fabulous book. It holds an honored place on my shelf of Norse myths. (I would mention "The Norse Myths" by Kevin Crossley-Holland in the same breath.) A favorite line: "Don't praise the sword till after the fight/Don't praise the ice until it's crossed/Nor the ale until you're sloshed."

I thoroughly enjoyed reading these poems & immersing myself in pre-Christian stories, philosophies and mores. Mr. Crawford did a skillful job in translating these Old Norse mythologies and making it user-friendly to the masses like myself. The poems have an easy rhythm and are not bogged down with arcane language. My favorite poem was, Balder's Dreams, where Odin awakens the dead witch to interpret his sons dreams of his own death.I enjoyed the Poetic Edda immensely and look forward to other works by the author in the future.
