Jackson Crawford earned his Ph.D. in Scandinavian Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and an M.A. in linguistics from the University of Georgia. He has taught Norse mythology, the Old Norse language, and the history of the Scandinavian languages at the University of California, Los Angeles. There's a difference... actually, there's an abyss between a translation and a true, high quality social localization. That means conveying the work in a way it respects the original context and makes it available to a foreign audience in the right context. That's not easy. But the reader can sense when reading a mere translation or a true localization. Mr. Crawford has given us the context of the Edda in a language we can truly feel and visualize the Edda in its full wonder.

the philological skills of the author are evident in this careful translation. No pretender to the throne, Dr. Crawford brings to bear all the necessary historical linguistics, consummate mastery of the entire Norse corpus, and shrew literary judgement to produce a more authentic experience of the style and rhetoric of the Poetic Edda than has ever been rendered in English. While translation of poetry can never truly avoid doing violence and injustice to the source material, this translation injures least.

While the actual translation of the original Old Norse poetry is superb, skillfully capturing the rhythmic meter of the ancient Skaldic poetry, the bonus features such as the engrossing, comprehensive introduction to Viking society, as well as Dr. Crawford's whimsical "Cowboy Havamal" help to bring these venerable texts to life.

I really enjoyed Jackson Crawford's version of The Poetic Edda. I came to it after having read a few books about the history of the Vikings, and was ready to learn a little more about their literature, mythology, and way of thinking. Crawford's translation is clear and modern, and his introductions to the various poems in the work are helpful for people who, like myself, are new to the subject. I was fascinated by this book and you will be too.

As a huge fan of Norse mythology, I have read several translations of The Poetic Edda and I must say, this one isâ€“hands downâ€“the best translation I have read and now, one of my favorite books.While I respect some other translations, I find the ones that I have read to be often inconsistent in style, and with difficult and odd word choice, which makes the reading of those translations a bit challenging (but not in a good way).This is not the case with Crawfordâ€™s Edda. I read this book and never felt more connected to the stories of the gods and heroes. The introduction is clear and really gives a nice background to the poems, and why they were translated the way they are in the book. It also gives a nice understanding about the history, as well as the Vikings and their culture which is a huge part of the poems and their background. The language throughout is contemporary and polished, and the poems are translated and written so beautifully! The poems can easily take the reader into a world of magic and myth, heroes and sagas with such beautiful writing. Also, donâ€™t miss out on the the excellent bonus of this book, which is the Cowboy Havamal- that on its own deserves a 5-star review.Crawford did a fantastic job finally bringing the Poetic Edda into the 21st century with this flawless translation. If youâ€™re into Vikings/ Norse Mythology/ history or books in general: donâ€™t miss out on this one!(btw, I bought this book as gifts to many family and friends and they all love it!)

I really enjoy this book, and have read it more than once already. Dr. Crawford is one of the world's finest scholars of Old Norse.It is not, however, a general interest book. I doubt that someone with no interest in the Norse Gods and heroes would be very interested. If you are unsure, watch a few of Dr. Jackson Crawford's Youtube videos, and you'll know whether you want this book or not.(As with salty Dutch licorice, you'll probably love it or hate it.)

Fabulous book. It holds an honored place on my shelf of Norse myths. (I would mention "The Norse Myths" by Kevin Crossley-Holland in the same breath.) A favorite line: "Don't praise the sword till after the fight/Don't praise the ice until it's crossed/Nor the ale until you're sloshed."

I thoroughly enjoyed reading these poems & immersing myself in pre-Christian stories, philosophies and mores. Mr. Crawford did a skillful job in translating these Old Norse mythologies and making it user-friendly to the masses like myself. The poems have an easy rhythm and are not bogged down with arcane language. My favorite poem was, Balder's Dreams, where Odin awakens the dead witch to interpret his sons dreams of his own death.I enjoyed the Poetic Edda immensely and look forward to other works by the author in the future.

Iâ€™m a huge Ken Follett fan, but this is my least favorite of his books. The idea of someone waking up with amnesia is fascinating ( that by itself would have been a great mystery book) but after a certain point the storyline is obvious, and I didnâ€™t like any of the characters enough to care what happened to them.

I didn't think I could ever listen to anything written by Ken Follett that I would not enjoy. After listening to World Without End, Winter of the World, Fall of Giants, and Pillars of the Earth (each one a classic that I can listen to many times) I was really disappointed in Code to Zero. Plot sounded really interesting but it just did not go anywhere (in my opinion). After one listening I will send it to the resale shop.

Not the best Ken Follett novel I have read but still retained many of the features I have come to expect from his stories. Fast moving, full of suspense. Like usual I couldn't put it down. But somehow not quite in the league of previous masterpieces.

I finished this book in two days as I could not. Put it down. I live about 25 miles south of cape Canaveral and am familiar with all the places men tioned in the book. That made it even more interesting to me. I was in a rooftop revolving resturant in Bangkok with my wife when they landed on the moon. The were showing it live on TV in the resturant. The cliental were an international group. We were all mesmerized BT the landing. Both my wife and I are now in our eighties and the moon landing remains as one of those special events in our lifetime.

That well-written, elegant novel reminded me very much of John le Carre famous books, however,Code to Zero is original in its own way telling fascinating story of the Cold War of the 60-ies.The book starts with the man waking up at tbe railway station, dessed in rugs and not remembering who he was.The plot unravels as that man who is the American rocket scientist Luke Lucas tries to restore his forgotten past and understand what events led to his total amnesia.The novel describes the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union after the Russians successfully launched the first satellite and the Americans went through a number of failed attempts to catch up with their enemy.Code to Zero is the story of a few friends, who met at the university, fought in the Second World War and kept in touch after the war.Friends who liked and loved each other and some of whom betrayed the others working for their country's enemy.That is the story of life-long devotion to each other and blind readiness to sacrifice everything which is sacred and dear to them for false political beliefs.

this must have been one of the first novels by Follet. He is my favorite author but this one was very poorly written in my opinion. Plot was quite unrealistic and characters superficial. Nothing like Pillars of the Earth or the Century Trilogy

As usual, Ken Follett has not let me down. Energized writing. I had no idea what was going to happen. There was excitement at the turn of every page. Really enjoyed the pieces about the rocket. Added a great deal. Strongly recommend this book. As a history buff, I have never been disappointed with anything written by Ken Follett.

I kept asking myself, did Ken Follett really write this, or did he conract his name out to amtoher author. His books have always consumed me. History, either American or World always bored me, but Ken Follett's novels told history in a way that is acurate and entertaining. Code to Zero tells a little about the space race, but almost as na after thought. The story is very predictable and the characters are alomst boring.Well, as I said, I am a huge Ken Follett fan, so I was expecting a lot more than what I got from Code to Zero.
