As the ONLY full time beat reporter of Times Square and Forty Deuce from mid seventies up to 1986, Friedman puts the reader right there in the midst of the action, feeling the grime, the crime, the time, the rhythm and the rhyme, the history, the mystery, the misery, the hopes and dreams, the lubes and creams, the wholly innocence and the unrepentant guilty as charged, the proud, the forgotten, the johns, the skells, the pross, the pimps, the blues, the unlikely heroes and hidden villains, this book is practically The matrix for HBO's "The Deuce" but far deeper and grittier. Step right up, sucker!

Pretty good book for the most part. It gives you a little about the history of Times Square then a few stories regarding some of the more popular locales and neighborhood celebrities. I really wish they added more about the gay scene that went on there. Some places like SALLY's and Edelweiss were just as relevant to the history of Time's Square as was Show World. Towards the end of the book the author loses focus on Times Square and relays stories about past business party associates. A fun read for anyone that wants to reminisce or learn about what NYC used to be like before it was crippled by gentrifiers and do good politicians.Worth Reading

Now Times Square, 42nd Street (aka The Deuce), 8th Avenue and even The Port Authority Bus Terminal itself were sleazy as hell and dangerous and full of porn palaces and whores and hustlers and pimps in the late 1970s and 1980s - oh I miss it so (kidding). Somehow concurrent with that just described a myth developed of beautiful teen-aged white girls from Minnesota running away from home, hopping on a Greyhound bus to NYC, and immediately being forced into prostitution by evil black pimps. And who was there was to save them? Catholic Priest Bruce Ritter and Covenant House! Ritter so successfully peddled this tale in quest of fame and contributions even then President Reagan publically called him "The Good Shepard of Times Square". But none (or mostly none) of it was true, and the author does a good job of exposing this and I must say Ritter's depiction never squared with my own experience with that part of town. Truth is Ritter ran a home for troubled teens but they weren't sweet Nordics he was saving from debauchery they were most likely black or Puerto Rican youths from NYC some fleeing dysfunctional family situations and some even kicked out due to drug use, bad behavior etc. Not that such children don't need assistance and kudos to those who will aid them, but the reality of the situation was nothing like the picture painted... and Father Bruce was eventually forced out when it came to light he was having sexual relations with some of his youthful charges...

I’m a big fan of 70s and 80s sleaze. I loved every page of this book. Really takes you to a special time and place in American culture. 42nd Street is painted with all its gritty and grimey glory. Pull up a stool at the ole glory hole and let your eyes stare at the wonderment before you.

This brought me back to the 1980s, and the days of the old/Pre-Disney Times Square. A great book, mostly interviews of people who worked in the strip shows and small businesses that lingered after the legit theaters on 42nd died. Josh Friedman is a good, empathetic writer, and provides a literate history of the decline and fall of the Great White Way, along with the stories of the people who lived and worked there. The details on the business of running a peep show, and the chapters on Al Goldstein (Screw Magazine) and his challenge to the owner of Plato's Retreat are graphic to the point of gross...but those were the days.

This book is truly one of the kind. The author walked the walk in relation to the subject matter which gives all these stories a singular perspective. Growing up nearby Manhattan I caught Times Square mostly during its makeover period but always wondered about its sordid past and cast of characters. This book satisfied those curiosities without coming across as a bland history book. It's broken up into easy to digest tid bits of who, what, when, where.

Helpful and validating. I felt myself identifying with the many points made in the book and wish I’d had this resource years ago. I would recommend this to OBGYNs and all family doctors who might need more resources to refer to their patients. None of my doctors knew about this book and it helped more than therapy ever did. Give this book a try, it might not resonate with you as much as it did with me, but it is a worthwhile start to the road of postpartum recovery. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and you are not alone!

Since my experience with postpartum OCD/insomnia/anxiety three years ago, I’ve read books, attended seminars, and talked with a lot of women about this subject. This book has some of the best descriptions and advice of all. It really touched me. It gave me hope about a second pregnancy and postpartum period. It is concise and powerful. Even if I don’t go ahead with a second pregnancy, it’s messages have helped me process my first experience.

I remember saying aloud "What am I thinking?" when I became pregnant with my second child after a previous struggle with postpartum depression. I couldn't imagine having to go through it again. I had read Karen Kleiman's first book "This Isn't What I Expected" and it helped me immensely. I saw that she had another book and my own words caught my attention. "What am I thinking? " My questions and my fears and the issues that frightened me so were addressed in this book. Karen's book has helped to alleviate some of my fears and has taught me what I need to know as I welcome my second child into my family. I will read it again before my new baby is born. This is a must read for anyone who has struggled with PPD and wonders how she might handle having another baby. Thank you, Karen.

The book is well-written and thorough, and it helped me a lot with me 2nd pregnancy after a really tough time with PPD.

The book was helpful but I just want to say something to all of the moms out there who are reading it. I had ppd with my first baby but I did not with my second. It was a totally different and wonderful experience so please know that just because you had it with one does not mean that you will have it again. For me, the second baby was so much easier because I had been through so much with the first. It is really scary to even think about going through that again but I am living proof that it is well worth it! Good luck! :)

Wish I'd had this for my first pregnancy. It helped a lot in preparation for the birth of my son and coping with PPD the second time. My husband got a lot out of it, too. I'd recommend it.

I suffered from ppd with my first child and am currently contemplating having another. I just started the book, but it has defentily put my mind at ease.

Sitting down for a morning cup of tea with my husband, I began to open the latest package from Amazon to share with him. "Not more books!" he sighed. I had ordered this one because of its Juan Wijngaard illustrations. Our family has nearly read to pieces our copies of his Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Sir Gawain and the Loathly Lady, so I knew that Cloud Tea Monkeys would be visually exquisite. What I didn't expect was a text that was exquisite as well. Mal Peet and Elspeth Graham know how to "show not tell":"The sun had not yet found a way through the mountains, but it was coming; a light the color of lemons was soaking into the sky and painting out the stars.""The overseer laughed an ugly laugh full of brown teeth.""His mustache was like a spread of snowy wings.""Then from under the cloth there came a good deal of sniffing and snuffling: short shallow snuffles and then some long deep sniffs and then the kind of gasping that comes before a sneeze. Then another, longer silence. A hand came out from under the cloth. The fingers clicked again....When Tashi saw his face, the Royal Tea Taster no longer looked stern; he looked like a man who had seen an angel."We read on. As I finished the story, my husband dabbed his eyes with his napkin,"It's OK, you can keep ordering books."

Our family has read and re-read this book many times. Most recently I took it to a 3rd grade class to read aloud. The children all loved the story and it was new to most of them. It's a tale of love, magic, and has a happy ending with no major horrors along the way. Lovely prose and beautifully illustrated.

This book deserves to get a lot more attention. It is one of those children's books that may be remembered into adulthood. The basic plot is easy for young readers to follow, but within the deeper layers and greater complexity, there are themes of class, poverty, kindness, women's working conditions/equality, unlikely heroism, the value and capability of animals, and a touch of magic. My son and I both declared Cloud Tea Monkeys as a "very special book" upon first read, and cannot wait to read it again and again.

This is a beautifully illustrated book with a long but well told tale. It has a touch of magic, a big helping of multicultural exposure, and captivating artwork on every page.When I finished reading it to my daughters for the first time, the four and a half year old immediately took the book from my hands and started turning the pages herself, reviewing the full color pictures. "I liked this book" she said solemnly. Me too.It's worth getting your hands on.

Stunning illustrations, really great story

Beautifully illustrated. Wonderful story about sharing and kindness and how life rewards such actions. Good for primary school ages.

An excellently written story with charming illustrations. I found and bought some monkey picked tea to sip while reading. If you want to get in touch with your Inner Monkey, there is no better way than this.

A children's book but superbly produced in terms of binding, quality of paper and stunning illustrations (see photo gallery of some of the images I've posted from the book). Buy two copies: one for your child to read, and one to keep as a treasure!
