Review

“Fascinating, shrewd… [The book’s] portrait of China is informed by Mr. Kissinger’s intimate firsthand knowledge of several generations of Chinese leaders. The book deftly traces the rhythms and patterns in Chinese history…even as it explicates the philosophical differences that separate it from the United States.”—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times“Nobody living can claim greater credit than Mr. Kissinger for America's 1971 opening to Beijing, after more than two decades of estrangement, and for China's subsequent opening to the world. So it's fitting that Mr. Kissinger has now written On China, a fluent, fascinating…book that is part history, part memoir and above all an examination of the premises, methods and aims of Chinese foreign policy.”—The Wall Street Journal“Fascinating… In On China, statesman Henry Kissinger draws on historical records and 40 years of direct interaction with four generations of Chinese leaders to analyze the link between China’s ancient past and its present day trajectory. In doing so, the man who helped shape modern East-West relations presents an often unsettling, occasionally hopeful and always compelling accounting of what we’re up against.”—The Chicago Sun-Times“Fascinating… No living American has played a more important role than Henry Kissinger, the former national security adviser and secretary of state, in bringing about the historic rapprochement between the United States and China. … [Kissinger] draw[s] deep insights into China's traumatic encounter with much stronger Western powers.”—The San Francisco Chronicle“On China, Kissinger's 13th book, blends an incisive strategic analysis of the moves and countermoves of China, the United States and the former Soviet Union with telling vignettes about his meetings with Chinese Communist Party leaders… entertaining.”—The Los Angeles Times“No one can lay claim to so much influence on the shaping of foreign policy over the past 50 years as Henry Kissinger.”—The Financial Times“From the eminent elder statesman, an astute appraisal on Chinese diplomacy from ancient times to the fraught present “strategic trust” with the United States. Former Secretary of State Kissinger brings his considerable scholarly knowledge and professional expertise to this chronicle of the complicated evolution and precarious future of Chinese diplomacy with the West. … Sage words and critical perspective lent by a significant participant in historical events.”—Kirkus Reviews

In On China, Kissinger describes what he calls the "triangulation" between China, the US, and the USSR. Kissinger tells us that Chinese leaders, starting with Mao Zedong, skillfully played the Americans and Russians off against each other, bolstering China's relatively weak position and enabling it to behave as a third Superpower. This account is the most significant element in On China, though Kissinger gives us more. He briefly sketches China's history, including the odd fact that the vast country apparently has no origin myth -- even in its oldest stories China was simply always there -- and then brings the picture into increasing detail as he moves forward, achieving the sharpest focus in those years when Kissinger himself was closely involved in the Chinese--American interaction. Along the way we get glimpses of the personalities of 20th and 21st century Chinese leaders. Mao, for example, comes across as brilliant and fiercely determined, but lacking any sense of empathy. Zhou Enlai was subtle, polite and solicitous, but distant. Deng Xioping was practical, down-to-earth, and direct, and so on -- the former Secretary of State is at pains to be objective and to give everyone his due. Kissinger may be an old cold warrior, and some will never forgive him for his involvement with the Vietnam war and the bombing of Cambodia, but his analyses are always insightful, and it is fascinating to follow his mind at work. Highly recommended.

The book is of immense value to anyone with even a passing interest in US, China relations. While some may criticize HAK for his treatment of Moa and other significant dignitaries, i.e. he does not go into detail regarding personalities and character traits, he does provide adequate information concerning their thoughts and statements related to his, HAK's, experience with them. Typical of Kissinger writings related to historical events, he frames all actors in such a way as to explain their behavior, rather than to microscopically examine their motives or personalities....with the practical effect, the reader is allowed to concentrate on events, instead of becoming embroiled in particulars related to individuals..........All people have particulars, about which, volumes of speculative writings could be generated; HAK penetrates and emphasizes the traits understandable to virtually every person. I believe the great lesson presented by this volume is that deep understanding of previous events, not the random occurrence various personalities, is the touchstone of successful international relations. HAK is a master of not losing perspective on the forest by becoming too concerned with the individual trees.

I’m giving this book 5 stars because of its uniqueness and the value of its personal interpretation of events, the many direct quotes and examples given, and the the author’s obvious importance in the last 40 years of world history. That is not to say this is a perfect book. It’s is peculiar to itself and worth the read.As someone who has studied and lived in China, though after the periods referred to in the book for the most part, I find many of his explanations and analysis to be worthy of serious consideration and based on historical fact with consideration of the ancient and modern Chinese consciousness. Do I agree with everything? No. This book would have been too tame and timid if every statement expressed in its pages were wholly supported by all readers.I anticipate, from a quick scan of other reviews, that some will find the author rather laudatory towards several of the Chinese leaders mentioned. He does show respect, something the American republic is often hesitant to do towards any foreign leader or even our own; however, you will find he writes with similar respect towards American leaders of similar time periods and it is impossible to write clear facts in some cases, without it being assumed that credit is being given. The author has a very well realized concept of the stumbling blocks, cultural tripping points and shear weight of history that face any combination of leaders from China and the U.S. as they try to step forward into the future. In many cases, it seems that he is refraining from judgement or attempting to put forth facts that the general public with its media pipeline of information, may not have considered. One must read this book for its value as a statement of viewpoint and personally experienced event, understood from one man’s perspective. It is useful, in and of itself; all accounts of history have a perspective unique to the telling and the study of what it perceived or advertised is nearly as important as the event themselves. Consider Ramesses II and his carving commemorating the defeat of the Hittites at Kadesh.

SPARROW'S THOUGHTS:Wow. What I just finished reading is incredible; absolutely incredible. There are, in all seriousness, so many great things I can sit here and share about this novel; the list is endless, really, and my only hope is to do this book justice.Firstly, I have not read any of Lynn Austin's work, this is my first. Secondly, I have not read any Biblical fiction. Ever. Thus, this is my first. Having said that, Keepers of the Covenant is a book that works on every single level I can think of: from ethnic and cultural observations of racial identity, from a storytelling point of view; it covers central themes such as: the construction of a home, of a family, of rules and laws, tradition, customs and religion. It is a story about the essential factors of civilization itself and of individuals that face real life problems in a way that is both painfully logical and extremely emotional.Sharing that last sentence just now makes me realize how incredibly strange and fanatical this may all sound, but how do you even begin to describe perfection? Especially when it is so affecting?Further, what Lynn Austin fashions together through her writing is seriously untouchable. Her storytelling resonated in a way that made me go into my own little world and blurt (literally) things like:"Yes! I have felt exactly like this Mrs. Austin! I have wrestled with these very questions and struggles at one point in my life! So what do I do!?To which Lynn Austin strikingly responds:"The question we have to ask, the question I ask myself is, will we allow grief and disappointment to erect a barricade between us and God? Or will we allow God to be the barricade, the shelter, between us and our sorrow?". . . {stares wide-eyed} . . .More than that though, the novel left me deliberating on how incredibly difficult it is to pull something like this off and to keep a balance between what drives a story and the story itself without making the novel about ideas or beliefs; it's so brilliant! What else can I say without giving any spoilers!?Ultimately, Keepers of the Covenant is a versatile story that is deeply affecting, gripping, thought-provoking and as close to a perfect novel as it can possibly be; I highly recommend this series!I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers for the purpose of this review, it was not required of me to give a positive review, but to solely express my honest thoughts and opinions of this book, which I have done.IN A NUTSHELL:// Lynn Austin's writing is stellar and with an intriguing and gripping plotline like this one, you are sure to get lost in the lives of both the characters and their world// This is one of the most thought-provoking novels I have read to date and I absolutely love it with every fiber of my being!// Brilliant novel! Simple, stunning, out of this world; something very special. Thank you so very much Mrs. Austin for the incredible blessing of giving to us stories like these// With only a quarter into the novel, already I found it difficult to carry out my mundane life (and sleep for that matter), because I could not stop thinking about what would happen next, and how the story would play out! So much so, that I was compelled to pick up my Bible just to see if the story played out as so; I really wanted these fictional characters to have existed because I was way too emotionally involved so to speak// I must confess that I am finding it difficult even now, to pinpoint the exact moment when I came to realize that Keepers of the Covenant was something very special, and I say this because the second I decided to picked up the novel, I had a snarky approach. Unaware of its significance however, I felt its impact immediately// Every character has a significant role to play and every small detail is taken into consideration in a way that takes your heart on an emotional roller coaster// I wholeheartedly and in every respect enjoyed this novel. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone; this book spoke to me on so many deep personal levels and I can’t recommend it enough3 THINGS I LIKED:+ I am absolutely in love with Lynn Austin's storytelling; it is so very clever. The way she pieces these biblical stories into fictional stories is extraordinary. Her ability to create moments that the reader can connect with is beyond anything I have ever read in my life! She made me believe every single word as if I as right there with the characters fearing for their lives, frightened for their well-being, and that is what makes this book so very special+ Most thought-provoking for me was the historical aspect of the novel. Lynn Austin includes and builds on all Jewish beliefs, their customs, their language, their holidays, their practices, their religious struggles with little effort and it all ties in beautifully at the end+ To me, it is a special gift and skill when an author is able to make a solid connection between a novel and its reader; in fact, those are the stories that fly through and remember for years to come. Needless to say, it is a very difficult task to achieve. Lynn Austin is an exception though, as she magically brings Biblical characters to life!3 THINGS I DID NOT LIKE:As much as I like to encourage constructive criticism in this section of my review, I just simply couldn't with this one. As aforementioned, Lynn Austin to me, is untouchable. You just have to be in awe of her, because she is well beyond her yearsOverall Rating:Storyline | 5/5 SparrowhawksCharacters | 5/5 SparrowhawksViolence | ModerateProfanities | NoneSexual Content | MinorMature subjects/themes include, but are limited to: loss of a loved one, death, assault and battery, family strife, divorce, parent-teenage conflict, child abandonment, kidnapping, under-aged drinking, abuse of alcohol and drugs, prostitution, sorcery, antisemitism, genocide, child abuse, spousal abuse, sexual harassment, depression, agnosticism, theftRead full review here: http://livingonborroweddays.com/2014/11/14/sparrows-book-review-keepers-of-the-covenant-the-restoration-chronicles-2-lynn-austin/

People familiar with scripture are most likely also familiar with the story of Esther, how she saved the Jews from being slaughtered by approaching the king when he had not called for her. Keepers of the Covenant approach the story from a different angle, this time through the eyes and experiences of Ezra, a devout man of God from the same era. Ezra lives through the attack upon the Jews, because remember that while the king proclaimed the Jews could defend themselves, he could not undo the permission already given for them to be attacked. So there was an attack on the 13th day of the 12th month, and Ezra, usually a scholar, fought alongside his brothers, defending his people from their enemies. Fast-forward at least a dozen years and we have Ezra asking the new king's permission for the Jews to leave for Jerusalem, their promised land, so they may worship as instructed in the Torah. This story really is about Ezra and his spiritual journey and his putting away the seed of bitterness that has grown within him against any peoples other than Jews. But it also follows the stories of Amina, an Edomite, who was orphaned during the attack, and the story of Reuben, another child, this time Jewish, who for many years of his life loses his way.All right, I did enjoy Keepers of the Covenant in that I wasn't familiar with the events following the life of Esther. I've never read the book of Ezra in The Bible, so had no knowledge of his story. That part of the novel was fascinating, all of the historic references, and watching Ezra draw his people back into a devotion to God. He truly is a keeper of the covenant with God, and whenever that covenant is broken, God returns the children of Israel into bondage until they repent again and turn from their wickedness. I think Ms. Austin did a superb job in capturing the authenticity of Jewish beliefs at the time, and I appreciated her efforts. However, I never bought into her use of dialogue. A lot of the books I read are very strict in their use of language for dialogue, making sure the spoken word matches the era in which it is being spoken. I was constantly yanked out of my focus while reading this book because the spoken sentence structure for the characters was too modern. Words like "kids" or "weird" were used, along with more words than I can remember. It was very distracting, just when I started getting into the story, a conversation between characters, any characters, would snap me out of it. So I would like to see more effort put into making the dialogue authentic.I would have also preferred it if the story had just been about Ezra. All right, yes, I liked Amina a lot. She's a very sweet girl, but the climax could have been achieved just as solidly without her and Reuben. In fact, the book would have been at last 100 pages shorter, and in my eyes, much more concise and effective a read. So yes, while I enjoyed Keepers of the Covenant it could have used a bit of tightening in places. I would, however, still recommend it to friends.- I received this book for free from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review, which I have given.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of February 2019: Julie Yip-Williams’ memoir speaks to one of our greatest fears, that we would be diagnosed with a terminal disease, and to our greatest hope, which is that we could face life straight on, fully, without squinting, and live each day with honesty, ambition, and true feeling. She was born ethnic Chinese in Vietnam. As a young child, she had cataracts that rendered her nearly blind—her grandmother felt she would be a burden to the family and tried to have an herbalist end her life. When the family fled for the U.S., she was able to get corrective eye surgery in California. Still, she was declared legally blind due to poor vision. She earned her way into Williams College, attended Harvard Law School, married, and settled in Brooklyn with her husband and two children. Then at 37, she was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. For five years, she dealt with the disease, took care of her family, prepared them and herself for the future, and sought understanding by writing about it. There is hope, anger, fear, reflection, immersion in the everyday, and joy reflected in this book. The Unwinding of the Miracle seeks to express the truth about what it is like to face death--and to face life--and it succeeds masterfully. --Chris Schluep, Amazon Book Review

Review

“Eloquent, gutting and at times disarmingly funny . . . Yip-Williams writes with such vibrancy and electricity even as she is dying. . . . This memoir is so many things—a triumphant tale of a blind immigrant, a remarkable philosophical treatise and a call to arms to pay attention to the limited time we have on this earth. But at its core, it’s an exquisitely moving portrait of the daily stuff of life: family secrets and family ties, marriage and its limitlessness and limitations, wild and unbounded parental love and, ultimately, the graceful recognition of what we can’t—and can—control.”—The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)“Everything worth understanding and holding on to is in this book. . . . A miracle indeed.”—Kelly Corrigan, New York Times bestselling author of The Middle Place and Tell Me More“A beautifully written, moving, and compassionate chronicle that deserves to be read and absorbed widely.”—Siddhartha Mukherjee, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Emperor of All Maladies“Julie Yip-Williams lived a life defined by effort and incredible self-reliance. But in this searing memoir of increasing vulnerability, she dismantles and then reconstructs what it means to be triumphant. Her writing examines not only her disability and illness—and their cultural, medical, and narrative constructs—but love, authenticity, hope, egotism, even rage. I didn’t know Julie, but in these pages, I grew to love her.”—Lucy Kalanithi“When talking to my patients, I have always struggled to find the perfect balance between hope and honesty. While they are often thought of as opposites, Julie Yip-Williams reminds us they can coexist in a beautiful and meaningful way. In The Unwinding of the Miracle, we are treated to a beautifully written story that is also at times brutally candid about the realities of her cancer diagnosis and treatment. It is increasingly rare to find such an authentic voice, one that will inform and inspire you.”—Sanjay Gupta, M.D. “[When] Yip-Williams was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer at the age of thirty-seven in 2013, she decided to write her story, which resulted in this inspiring and remarkable work that chronicles her immigration to the U.S. and her final five years. . . . [Her] wise and moving account of her battle with cancer is an extraordinary call to live wholeheartedly.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

#2,526 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I am a sucker for bleak books and chose this one because of the blurb by Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee author, of the Emperor of All Maladies, which I loved. But it turns out that this book is not bleak. Mostly it's instructive, inspirational, and hopeful. Julie Yip-Williams, with beliefs based in Buddhism, shows the world through her words how to approach death with" the dignity and grace of an evolved soul." As someone who has tried and failed at Christianity (for which I have no regrets), I find her philosophy thought-provoking. If there's a silver lining in this beyond this pretty brilliant book, it's that she had access to excellent care and was blessed with seemingly exceedingly intelligent and amazingly talented children and an excellent support system. The authors' recounting of her life (which almost ended in infanticide), including up-by-her bootstraps educational efforts achieved in spite of blindness, her battle with stage IV cancer (including intimate details about her treatment and the disease's progression), and thoughts about her impending death are intertwined masterfully. Like Paul Kalanithi's book When Breath Becomes Air, she shows readers what choosing to live a life less ordinary in the face of tragedy looks like. What I love most is that she acknowledges her own flaws in thinking and acting (and that of others) in the face of this unfairness and "how impotent we truly are in the face of unseen forces that would cause the earth to tremble or cells to mutate and send a body into full rebellion against itself," yet sees through to the beauty in life. In the end, she exhorts us to, "Live while you're living."

Absolutely love this book. I could not put this book down and I wished I had read this years before when my sister-in-law was dying of cancer, or when my friend was dying of cancer also. I know it was a way for the author, Julie, to write down her thoughts and feelings during the last few days of her life. It was a testimony to her family, her love of life and it was honest, emotionally piercing to the soul and tender. There was anger in the book, which she did not deny herself of, grief and joy.I cannot tell more about it because if I do, I will spoil it for the next reader and I cannot do that. This book is not one of those happy books where the reader dies gracefully and peacefully. No. She raged against the fates but at the same time, she was so appreciative of the world we live in. She did cry and she will make you cry, but she will also make you admire her at the end for being so divinely human. Her bravery was not in how she died, but in how she embraced her life and how she shared it with the rest of us. She opened her heart to the world and for this reader, she has left an unforgettable imprint on my life.

I ordered and read this book because I've had Stage 3 cancer and I needed to know what this author had to say about her Stage 4 journey, in case I end up there. I am glad the author was so honest about her feelings, including her resentments when comparing her fate to those of others. We read obituaries that make cancer victims sound like saints and pillars of courage as they battled to stay alive, but I knew I wasn't the only one who had doubts, feelings of weakness, and other negative thoughts. I totally related to the author's desire to shout "I have cancer!! I'm dying!!" as she smiled and exchanged pleasantries with others, and I related to the sensation of being suddenly cut off and removed from other people and the world itself. The author died young and left two small children behind. This makes her story sadder. I'm glad she went into great detail about the treatments she pursued for her cancer, including the array of drugs. I declined all drugs except those used for surgery, but I am interested in others' decisions and how they feel about those choices later on. Stage 4, which is metastatic cancer, is a different ball game, and I could relate to the author's sense that many don't understand what Stage 4 means for survival chances. I've felt many people may be misled by the cheerleading for people who have had Stage 1 breast cancer, for example, while those with metastatic cancer and poor survival chances are kind of disregarded, even in "support" groups. The author seemed to feel that even some with metastatic cancer are not facing the reality of their situation and that they hold out unrealistic hope for beating the cancer even as they are at death's door. I'm not sure what to say to that. I know people who have survived Stage 4 for many years. What we tell ourselves is important. In the end, though, we are just left to wonder why outcomes differ. Books like this one help us gather some clues, perhaps. The book is a bit repetitive about the author's early experiences with being born blind and having family members almost kill her because of it. I feel these passages are repetitive because the book is really a journal, and these were things the author revisited a number of times to gain resolution as she faced her mortality.I was heartened to read her husband's contribution to the book. I'm glad to have read what they shared. Thank you.

This book had been compared to “When Breath Becomes Air” which I read and loved. I did not love this book, nor did I like it. Although it is sad that Julie died at a young age leaving two young daughters, I did not connect with her at all. Her descriptions of how best to live your life were irritating. Having had friends who died of stage IV cancer, I was annoyed at her negative description of people who choose to remain hopeful in the face of a horrible disease. When some people have to schedule their chemo on a Friday so they can return to work on Monday, Julie never returned to her job after her diagnosis. She discussed the great effort it took her, after purchasing the apartment next door, to work with contractors to double the size of their living space. Money to buy the best was not an object. I never got the impression that she realized how fortunate she was to have family to help her and the freedom to choose treatment without worrying about paying for it.

Although the author’s name is fictional, this story was written by an M.D., which leads to some medical terms that left me somewhat cross-eyed. However, the authenticity of the main character's experience as he stumbles through medical school, made the Latin inconsequential.Be warned, if you buy this book and read it in a public place, you may well embarrass yourself by laughing aloud. Well, the laughter might not cause you a red face, but if you have to explain what is so funny--good luck with that!Along with lighthearted humor where the reader is laughing along with the main character and not at others, the author includes a smattering of well-considered social commentary on what exactly makes a good doctor. He educated me on the tremendous stresses endured not just by medical students, but also by those already qualified doctors who are expected to teach as well as perform their onerous duties on a hospital ward. For Seth, the stress extends beyond the hospital wards and stretches his personal relationships to breaking point. In summary, this is a terrific read. For a doctor, the author’s writing is beautifully clear and accessible--see what I did there? At 99 cents on Kindle, this is a bargain you shouldn’t miss.Disclaimer: This review was originally written for "Books and Pals" book blog. I may have received a free review copy.

As a retired Nursing Practitioner with forty-four years in the health care field, I am drawn to stories of medical professionals in the making. Didn’t Get Frazzled by David Z. Hirsch stands out as an entertaining, enlightening and realistic portrayal of the grueling path one must take to earn their standing as a competent professional. The main character, Seth and his band of cohorts are medical students enduring the trials and tribulations of medical school while also trying to manage the intricacies of their love lives. Hirsh has a distinctive voice, raw, real and at times hilarious. There were times I laughed out loud. But there were also times, when I felt the gravity of the situation as life and death hung in the balance. His characters were believable and multidimensional. They came alive on the page and added a deeper dimension to the stressors endured in the path to becoming a doctor. The story flows at a steady pace through various clinical scenarios, some funny, some sad to the roller coaster ride of twenty-something relationship issues. Back in the day, I dated a medical student so I could relate to the complexities.Through out it all, Seth reigns as the hero, often showing better clinical judgment than the person mentoring him, whether it be an attending or an intern. In that regard, the story lives up to it title, Didn’t Get Frazzled. I’d like to think that any doctor I entrust my care to would have done the same. This story is a vivid glimpse into the life of a medical student. I highly recommend this engaging and enjoyable read.

Great story, I loved it! Seth Levine is spending three years at the elite New York City medical school. He faces the many challenges of his future life. He endures much stress along with much humor, as well as the continuous break ups with a woman. How will he ever earn the title of "Doctor?" It's a long road ahead with many bumps along the way, but humor is what kept him going, going with the flow. Readers will love this story, written by a doctor who refuses to divulge his true identity ... that's okay, as long as he's compassionate, caring, and a good doctor. Obviously, he's a great writer, but how does he find the time? His story is truly hilarious and entertaining. A fast read and positively well written. Will there be another continuing story for Seth Levine? Highly recommend.

The phases of medical school. Using mnemonics in creative/funny ways to remember words and series. This took me down memory lane when I had to memorize the molecular chain in photosynthesis for my Biology class as an undergrad.Young love in flux and all the residual consequences. (Memory lane again). The author has a wonderful way of mixing poignancy and humor with the craziness of youth wanting to make new relationship rules and then wondering why they don’t work out in the long run. “We’re just friends!” …UH-HUH…The main character’s love for April and the pain of his loss when the relationship did not work out was well written. It tugs at the heart strings. Golly, I’m glad I’m not in that roller-coaster phase of my life. BUT there are more important things to be learned in medical school – demanding, rigorous, hard work and no sleep. I wondered when Seth had time to do laundry or buy toilet paper.Golly, this is fun read – frankly because it’s his (Seth’s life) – not mine. I understand the good sex (again well written), laughter amongst friends, observing symptoms, diagnosis and spontaneous interrogation by physicians who are mentoring Seth and his colleagues along the way.He mentions the book, “The New Our Bodies Ourselves”. I have that book! It was significant to me too – oh so many years ago.Is it really possible that an instructor would also be the model in a gynecologic exam? I loved the metaphor …” flicking [the drape] … like a preening matador”. The description is priceless.Obstetrics and Pediatrics: Teenage mothers – a physician’s view of children having children. Stepping through reflex tests of babies. Charming. I actually learned something. And a tired, frustrated mother who waited long hours to see a pediatrician. Seth gives the woman compassion and the reader is convinced Seth will become a successful physician. The pace is wonderful. There were times I had that fabulous, guttural laugh, with tears running down my face and I had to put the book down just to relish the moment. This is an excellent read – and required-reading material for anyone thinking about going to medical school. You have to be smart, be able to roll with the dice, analytical, exercise empathy, work very, very hard and have a sense of humor. Wild applause!
