Gringos In Paradise reads like a blog of day to day joys and aggravations in moving to Honduras and is probably similar to what gringos experience throughout Central America. I related to this book since I have visited the town where the author and her husband moved to (El Porvenir, Honduras) several times. The beginning section about leaving Hawaii dragged a bit but once they were on their way and in Honduras, it was a fun read.

I have visited Honduras over 20 times in the past 35 years and found this book to provide meaningful insight into Honduran culture and way of life. The author and her husband approached their move to Honduras with open minds and hearts, and obviously with a perspective that cultural differences should be embraced and understood, rather than viewed as "bad" simply because they are different from the way things are done in the U.S.The book is really a series of short stories that range in time from the couple's initial decision to move to paradise (somewhere), to the decision that Honduras was the paradise they sought to their day-to-day experiences - many of which are quite funny - after the move to their new home on the Honduran coast. What made the book particularly appealing was the depth of emotion and thought that went into the couple's leaving their old life and friends, interacting with new neighbors, local workers, and even their cat, who had to endure the move from the old paradise (Hawai'i) to the new.I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about visiting or moving to Honduras, as well as to anyone who wants insight as to how to approach cultural differences with an attitude of understanding and sensitivity.

I was a little annoyed by this book. The writing is amateurish at best, with lots of punctuation and grammatical errors, but the thing that really got me was the author's apparent lack of interest in really knowing and enjoying her new environment. The scene she writes of holing up in her dark, air conditioned bedroom, watching English language DVDs to drown out the noise of the Semana Santa festival party going on next door stunned me. Did she ever consider going to the party and learning about some of the customs and people of her newly adopted country? If you enjoyed this book, you'll really enjoy the other "Gringos in Paradise" book by Barry Golson.

This book never quite reached me. Too much about other things in their life and too little about honduran life

I agree fully with the other 1 and 2 star reviews. On the positive side, there are a few entertaining mini-chapters, and I'm sure the author and her husband are very nice folks, but unfortunately this book is poor overall. It's written very simplistically, and does indeed flirt with being offensive in a few condescending-sounding spots, where the author describes some of the 'simpler' aspects of the culture while admittedly not really understanding it much or trying very hard to familiarize herself with it. It comes off as a rudimentary writeup of some privileged Americans moving to a new culture with insufficient preparation or experience. It's long on personal musings about spiritual enlightenment and very short on information about Honduras and it's people. To be sure, there are a few good nuggets... but they get lost in the sauce about their cat, the other places she's been, her business, her personal habits and musings, etc.. etc.. It's entertaining in a few spots, but not my cup of tea.

Not only do I love to travel, but I love reading about other people traveling and especially from a faraway place like Honduras. With that said, this book did not let me down. It satiated my thirst for high adventure and enjoyable reading. When it comes to moving from one place to the other, I have found there are two kinds of people. The first group - I call the thinker group - analyzes every single detail down to will the new place be nicer than the one I am comfortable in now - and the second group which I call the fly by the seat of their pants group who don't think anything of just upping up and leaving and letting things fall as they may. I am unfortunately in the first group and I so envy the second group which the group I would place Malana. Oh to be able to read about doing the things I'm too fearful to do! But isn't that what reading books is all about? An escape? Learning how others did the things you're too scared to do?Such a delightful book, a pleasure to read and so encouraging for born again nomads like me! I give this book a five star rating for its content, writing style and overall enjoyment.

My initial draw to this book was the fact that it was set in Honduras. I have been to Honduras myself 7 times and when I seen this book come up for review I wanted to read about Americans who actually live there. As the book states, "Visiting a third world country is much different than seeing it as your home."I found the book a delightful look into an area I know, and found myself nodding as Malana describes what the driving is like I remember my first time there ( as a passenger in a van) I just closed my eyes I really couldn't watch! As Malana talks about not taking water for granted that is really an eye opener as well to be where you don't always have it.Chapter by chapter I laughed and felt as though Malana had literally brought my along with her. With a journal type flare, Malana shares the adventures and misadventures and I walked beside her page by page and am thankful for the journey.

I own probably a dozen ATK cookbooks, so if I was ever going to try a "healthy" cookbook, this one was the brand I knew I could trust most. Some really fantastic recipes in here. I'm more of a traditional southern/Texan style cook, so the recipes have to be flavorful and well done, even healthy versions, or they won't pass the test in our family. I have to admit that I was a little hesitant to add mustard and orange juice in the skillet chicken fajitas, but I knew that it would be our best place to start as a test for whether or not this cookbook would be a keeper. And to our Tex-Mex loving palates, we were all pleasantly surprised as to how much we loved it and that it was as good as any we've ever had in a restaurant or made at home. We've also loved the shepherd's pie and chicken parmesan. The peanut butter cookies, did not make a good impression though. Excited to try more recipes and see what will make it into our "loved" pile.

I am a longtime fan of America's Test Kitchen; I subscribe to the monthly magazine and have many of the cookbooks, so it's tough for the ATK team to bring out a volume that contains enough new material to make it worthwhile for me -- but I am thrilled with this cookbook. This is a 520-page ring-bound book with 800 recipes split into divider sections organized by course: Breakfast, Appetizers, Salads, Soups, Vegetables, Rice and Grains, Pasta, Fish, Poultry, Meat, Vegetarian Entrees, Stir-fries, Grilling, Pizza, Breads, Cookies, Cakes and Fruit Desserts. The volume finishes with a chapter of kid-friendly recipes, an index and informational charts. I've long considered the ATK indexes a weak point in otherwise superb books, but this index is much better! The paper is glossy, which makes them easier to clean, and the binding guarantees a flat page that won't close on you when your hands are covered with something! The four-color printing, layout and fonts make the recipes easy to read and understand, and the pages are filled with informative tips, product testing, and comparative information, all presented in an easy-to-read format. Now for the meat of the thing, as it were -- the recipes, at least what I've tried so far, are terrific. There's something here for everyone, with multiple variations listed which help you accommodate particular diets or preferences, and each recipe includes per-serving calorie, fat and nutritional information.Superb!

Bought this cookbook on the recommendation of many people even though I normally pull recipes off the internet. As a family, we've tried about a dozen of the dinner recipes and every single one has been a big hit with the whole family. I do have to plan ahead when I shop because many of the recipes use ingredients I don't normally keep in stock but the main reason I bought this cookbook is to push us out of the dinner rut we have been in -- the same ten or fifteen dinners over and over -- so it make sense that we have to buy ingredients we don't normally buy. That was the whole point for us! I love that the dinners incorporate so many vegetables, that they are mostly kid-friendly (even the recipes not marked as such) and that the instructions are crystal-clear. My significant other is not quite as confident in the kitchen as I am and the clear directions make it easy for him to handle the dishes on his own.We will definitely being putting a lot more dinners into our rotation now.

I absolutely love this book. It's become the first book I reach for when I'm meal planning. The thing that I appreciate most about the recipes in this book is that the portion sizes are completely realistic. It's not a "1/2 cup of pasta and 2 tablespoons sauce, with a sprinkle of cheese"-type healthy cookbook. There are so many light cookbooks and magazines where a recipe will be 300 calories a serving, but the serving is about a quarter of what a normal person would eat. With the recipes in this book, you can eat like a normal person and actually be full after one serving. I also appreciate the nutritional facts for each recipe, and the endless amount of customization and combinations you can do. Along with full recipes, the book gives you a lot of building blocks that you can use to create a meal (different sauces, variations on recipes, etc.). People who have been frustrated trying to use cookbooks while cooking will also appreciate the divided sections, lay-flat format, and heft of the book. I've made a ton of recipes out of this book so far and have loved every one--and the best thing is that there are TONS of recipes, so I have a lot left to try!

I know I will sound repetitious but I have to agree with many of the other reviewers--the good stuff takes a lot of prep work. There are a few recipes I have tried, though, that are quick and easy. Some examples:Ham and cheese waffles--delicious, relatively easy to prepare, a little salty, loved by all.Chicken quesadillas--a bit of work, tasty, but not OMG I must make these again.Skillet pasta--very tasty and easy to make, loved by all.A longer one was for chewy harvest fruit granola bars--took forever to prepare and the sugar mixture didn't turn into caramel. Not worth the work, but would have worked well as a trail mix.Overall, I will continue to try out different recipes in the book. There hasn't been one (yet) that didn't taste good. Even if the exact recipe doesn't work out, there are so many ways of adding flavor to each recipe that I have already been able to change up the ingredients and cooking methods a little to suit the pickier eaters.Definitely worth the purchase cost, and even better is knowing that I'm helping lower cholesterol and middle-age spread. I wish there was an option to give it a 4 1/2 star, because a 4 is too low.

“In the future . . . if by some miracle you ever find yourself in the position to fall in love again . . . fall in love with me.”I'm going to start this review off with this statement: I didn't cry while I was reading this book, but I did cry several days later when I was looking back on Lily's story. That shows how emotionally charged this story is, along with the true power behind Colleen's writing. I'm not going to give away any spoilers because you need to go into the book blind. If you want to know what happens, there are definitely some reviews out there that tell you the big twists and turns. But take my advice and don't spoil this book for yourself. It will lose a lot if you go in knowing exactly what to expect. So seriously, don't do it to yourself. Just let the beauty of Colleen's writing sweep over you and sink in.“All humans make mistakes. What determines a person's character aren't the mistakes we make. It's how we take those mistakes and turn them into lessons rather than excuses.”This is honestly not only one of the best reads of 2016, but also one of the most (if not the most) empowering. I want to give this book to every man, woman, and even teenager (it's definitely a NA/adult read) and tell them... READ THIS NOW! Do you want to know why? Because this book carries with it a very strong message, one that shows strength and courage that many people might not have at the time, but after reading will understand and gain. I honestly don't know if there has ever been a time when I was prouder to be reading the heroine's story due to her choices. Ultimately though, Colleen Hoover wrote a book that everyone can take something away from. Colleen always writes such unique stories, and this one is certainly no exception. But the one thing I will say is that this is truly her best book yet.“Just because someone hurts you doesn't mean you can simply stop loving them. It's not a person's actions that hurt the most. It's the love. If there was no love attached to the action, the pain would be a little easier to bear.”Lily's story is one that I never wanted to stop reading. If I know that I'm going to need to read a book in multiple sittings (which was the case with this book), I usually try to find a good place to stop. One in which, nothing major is happening and nobody is facing some drastic/perilous moment. Well you see the problem with this book is the fact that there is literally NO. GOOD. STOPPING. POINT! None! There was never a part where I felt safe in letting this book sit overnight because I knew that the story and the what if's would play endlessly in my mind. So I stayed up and read it all in one sitting because I simply couldn't stop. Lily was someone that I connected to right from the get go. I knew as soon as the book started that I would like her, and that never once stopped while I was reading. However, I didn't realize how much her character would affect me while I was reading. As I said before, after I was finished reading, I couldn't have been prouder of her decisions. The strength she had throughout the story to go through what she did, but also her resolve and conviction just made me constantly cheer her on. Lily is truly one of the most admirable characters that I have ever had the pleasure of reading about, and that admiration goes extraordinarily deep.“Life is a funny thing. We only get so many years to live it, so we have to do everything we can to make sure those years are as full as they can be. We shouldn't waste time on things that might happen someday, or maybe even never.”I mentioned it briefly above, but this book has a very powerful message, and this message is actually carefully woven into the story from page 1. You obviously don't realize it when you start reading the novel, but it's there when you look back after finishing. And this is also why I'm going to reiterate the importance of going into the story blind, because just as unexpected and emotional it is for the reader to read and witness what Lily goes through, it is even more unexpected and emotional for Lily. This is where this book truly shines, because you as a reader feel like part of the story. There's a very slow burn while reading, one in which we get to know characters and see the develop in the ways that we as humans get to know each other...but then Colleen rips that metaphorical rug out from under all of us, and shocks us with one revelation after another. But you know what? That's exactly how life is sometimes...sometimes you never see things coming in a million years and you have to figure out how to deal with these radical changes you never thought would happen.“It stops here. With me and you. It ends with us.”Where this book really got me though was the meaning of the title. Throughout the entire time I was reading, I kept wondering what the title meant. Because come on...this is Colleen Hoover and literally EVERYTHING has some significance (no matter how small). And when I got to the part of the story where the title finally made sense, guys let me tell you...this had an impact on me like no other. I just sat there with my book in my hands staring at the page for a solid 5 minutes. It is the perfect title for the perfect book.“Fifteen seconds. That’s all it takes to completely change everything about a person. Fifteen seconds that we'll never get back.”I connected with this book in my own way, and for that I am extraordinarily thankful to Colleen Hoover for even writing this book. The author's note at the end was just as powerful and amazing as the rest of the story, but it shows just how personal this story was for her to write. I applaud Colleen for writing this book and not "making things easy" for the main character or glossing over the "bad parts." This is an incredibly realistic book that makes you realize many things and leaves an imprint on your soul. It's important to remember that everyone must make extraordinarily difficult decisions in their life, and not everyone will agree with them. If this book even empowers one woman to take steps in making an important decision, the Colleen Hoover did her job. And I count myself lucky to have had the honor of reading this story because I am a changed person because of it!Happy reading :)

*Spoiler-free review*I have a confession to make here, folks:I dismissed Colleen Hoover years ago and I haven't read anything from her since. It's true. Three or four years ago I went through a string of so-so to bad Colleen Hoover books, and I decided to just put her out of my mind. I ignored her new releases, and I lumped her into my mental pile for authors who are "not for me."Recently, one of my friends wanted to buddy read this book. I thought, "Gah, pay full price for a book I'm not going to like?" However, I sucked it up and sort of grumbled about it, but I decided to give it a go.And this book blew me away. The Colleen Hoover I last read wasn't writing books at this caliber. This was a whole different level. For one, there are none, and I mean NONE, of the tired romance tropes presents in this book. In fact, this book was a little more woman's fiction than romance, if I'm being honest. While I guess it can still be classified, genre-rules-style, as romance, it is more about Lily's life experiences and the lessons that she learns about herself than anything else. There is a romance present, but I don't think it is the main focus of the story. While I'm not typically a women's fiction fan, I think that if this book took any other trajectory, it wouldn't have been as powerful.I typically don't read reviews before starting a book. In fact, I didn't even read the blurb for this one, or if I did, I forgot it before starting to read. I liked that. I think going in blind with an open mind and minimal expectations is the way to go. Though the twists and turns aren't 100% unexpected, the author very much succeeded in pulling the rug out from under me on more than one occasion.I'm usually not a fan of books where people say, "Wow, that made me think. This book is a thinker." I usually just roll my eyes internally because I assumed that the readers are being played like emotional pawns. I know, I'm judgy. But in this case, yeah, I was thinking a whole hell of a lot. It made me reevaluate how I perceive others and their relationships, and it made me rethink my biases. People are always know-it-alls until they are in the situation themselves, and then it doesn't seem quite as simple. The author made one right decision after another with this story. I think that is the key to its success. The author made a relatable, human character in Lily, and gave each supporting character their positives and negatives. There are no villains here. No easy answers. Colleen Hoover also made an insanely smart decision to have only Lily narrate the story. There was no other choice, really, but it gave readers a laser-focus on her, which is where our focus deserves to be.While this book has a positive ending, it is also a story that can be described as gritty, difficult, hopeful, powerful, and crushing, all at the same time. It is a long story, but it has a fast-pace with plot elements thrown in at the right times to keep interest engaged. I couldn't put the book down from the moment I got into the groove, and I read this story all night until the last page. The dedication is also important to read, but make sure you do it after you've finished the story and not before.Colleen Hoover impressed me so much with this story. It made me rethink a lot of things, but most of all, it made me rethink how I judged Colleen Hoover years ago. I won't dismiss her so easily again.

WOW doesn’t even begin to describe this book; it’s neither an articulate enough nor descriptive enough word to describe all the emotions that this book evokes. Colleen will break you, it won’t be pretty but I truly believe that this is a MUST read book of 2016.I HIGHLY recommend that you go into this story blind, I did as much as I hated that, it was well worth the tears. I would even consider buddy reading this book, you will need the support!I will admit that I was nervous about reading this book, based on the number of friends that had read it and were broken. Colleen broke some pretty tough hearts with this book.Colleen broke me at 96% that is when the tears fell in a steady stream. They were falling because I was sad to see someone loose something that they truly loved with all their heart. They were falling because I was so happy that someone was standing up for someone who needed more protection than the other. They were falling with the hope that they would all be able to achieve their happily ever after.Would I like to see a follow up to this?? Yes and No, I think she ending it at a good place, you know that there will be some drama to come. Do I want to witness it or live blindly that everything works out? I’m not sure how much more my heart can take.
