José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913) was Mexico's most illustrious graphic artist. For over forty years he worked tirelessly as an incorruptible and truly popular artist, illustrating cookbooks and fortune-telling books, collections of songs and riddles, periodicals and newspapers, children's books and novels, and most of all famous broadsides that were distributed throughout the country. After his death he was venerated by the artists of the new generation—Rivera, Orozco, and many others, who realized that he had both saved and renewed the art of engraving in Mexico, and incorporated much of Posada's imagery into their own work.Here are close to 300 of Posada's best engravings, all done for the printer and publisher A. Vanegas Arroyo in Mexico City. Posada worked in two techniques—engraving on type metal with a many-pointed burin and, later, relief etching on zinc. The broadsides he illustrated commemorated all sorts of occasions—disasters, political events, crimes, and miracles—or they glorified great popular heroes like Zapata. Posada was known for his calaveras—skeletons that cavorted, ate and drank, rode bicycles and horses, wielded swords and daggers, or were revolutionaries, streetcleaners, dishwashers, and almost everything else. This was traditional art for All Souls' Day, the Mexican Day of the Dead, but in Posada's hands it became extremely versatile, sometimes an instrument of social and political satire, sometimes a sympathetic portrait of a revolutionary, sometimes a comic, cartoon-like memento mori. He did engravings of murders, suicides, catastrophes, robberies, and executions, as well as of snake-men, giant snails, and other grotesques and deformation. He pictured the daily pleasures and chagrins of the people from a proletarian point of view, and with overflowing imaginativeness. There is brutality and horror in his art, but there is also humor, political consciousness, and a sprawling, immediate vitality.This edition includes explanatory notes and commentary, often giving precise topical meaning to what otherwise appears vague or allegorical. It presents all of Posada's various themes, and all of the many forms in which he worked in his maturity. It is hoped that through it he will gain the wider audience, especially in America, that he deserves.

I was familiar with the skeleton drawings long before I had even heard of Posada and after a trip to Mexico City a number of years ago I had to learn more. In the DF we saw a museum dedicated to cartoons and many of them were Posada's. The Dover book is a good introduction to his graphics. There is a lot of political humor in his work and even if you're not too interested in what the graphics subject matter you can still appreciate his skill. His artwork is probably known all over the worls although his name may not be. Now I need to find a good biography of the man.

I teach English language arts/ humanities through a cultural lens using art as a vehicle to understand historic social issues. This book was spot on to decipher the political times Posada lived. Great buy. Artwork great commentary.

What is obvious to anyone who has read the Koran is that Mohammad’s first impression of his initial vision was correct. “the angel gabriel” who showed up and threatened him and choked him until he recited the first verse of the Koran was a demon, trying to pass himself off as an angel of God. Unfortunately his wife and family persuaded him no demon could possess someone as nice as Mohammad. The demon later added that later revelations corrected the earlier verses. This ‘doctrine of abrogation’ allowed Mohammad to rewrite earlier prophet’s “incorrect teachings” like the 10 Commandments, revise Biblical events so Jesus was not crucified or rise from the dead, you have no savior, the Jews were not God’s chosen people, Abraham and his beloved son Ishmael lived in Arabia and built the Ka’aba to worship the moon god Allah and put the ‘black stone that fell fell from heaven’ there. Never having read the Bible and having been born 2,000 or 500 years after the events put Mohammad in a perfect position to correct the eyewitnesses. Glen covers most of this, showing how the “peace and love” parts of the early revelations were abrogated by the later kill or enslave all who do not bow the knee to Mohammad (oh, and Allah too) once Mohammad got enough followers to form a small army and terrorize more into being converts. He gives advice. Understand the enemy. Be unafraid to speak. Understand your own traditions. Only Muslims can reform Islam.

Almost, but not quite, too detailed for me to understand. All the Arabic names become like a foreign language, hence unreadable. But I learned a large amount of hitherto unknown information, and grateful I am for that. It only cements the conclusion to which I was beginning to arrive on my own, that Islam/Islamism is not a religion, but a form of government and very dangerous. I appreciated the notes used, the research undertaken, and the orderly way Mr. Beck presented the entire format. Very well done. Will read more about this new "ism". And will read the book several more times to more clearly understand it.

Just finished this eye-opening book. More Americans should read it and get educated about the threat we face today, rather than rely on the lies and politically correct platitudes that our leaders and those of the Islamic world, would have us believe. However, I expect Americans will bury their heads in the sand and refuse to confront the truth, until it is too late. Why is it so hard to understand the motives and desires of the Islamists when the Koran and their leaders lay it out very clearly? You don't have to believe Glenn Beck or others, just read Islam's holy books and look at the actions of its founder! And why are so many so eager to come to Islam's defense when it's teachings are counter to basic freedom, justice, and equality?

Extraordinary look into what has been a taboo subject for those that live in fear of a religion that has set out deter anyone that looks to write, infiltrate the DNA of the rise of Islam around the world. Unfortunately for the citizens of the U.S., neither of the last two administrations understood what was clear even in the early history of our country (Jefferson), that those that do not capitulate to Islam will be condemned as kafir and we will come under constant and persistent attack from a culture promulgated by hate and fear. If you dare to think or believe in anything distinct from their automaton, 10th century beliefs, death is their sentence. This book enlightens the reader into the complexity and dangers of Sharia, its history, the disparate sects within the religion, the challenges we face. It further engages the reader to determine his/hers next step(s) as we assess where we are as an inclusive nation who has and will continue to be infiltrated with those that will do anything to take down this country at it s very roots. This book, for me, though very informative only allowed for a window into what I already knew about the current world conditions, the core of Islamists, their ultimate design on their caliphate and how it effects this country.

A needed look at Islam. I don't believe there is a political or military solution to the violence perpetrated by those who are following to the letter the example of their prophet. It is a spiritual problem and the answer is spiritual and found in Christ. That may not be a politically correct statement but if one is serious about God then look at the evidence for the resurection. The evidence will not replace a need for an experience and faith in Christ but will point one in the direction of asking and receiving if one is honestly seeking. Peace be to you.

It is a nice quick reference guide on the importance of belief, to the devout, using significant sources that are respected by the community it references. Easy to read as both a guide and a primer of the influences of the cultures, countries, and Islamist driven antagonists throughout the Umma. When attempting to read this, or any Glenn Beck book, it’s best to remember his standing challenge, “Do your own homework.” Generally this book starts you on that path.Unfortunately, I have one lingering criticism: citation weirdness. His references are generally unbroken links to articles online. However, my biggest criticism it his style of citation. While perfectly suited for an e-book, his dismissal of citation standards such as parenthetical or numerical types make quick referral to his sources impossible. He doesn’t clearly cite sources for statements or assertions beyond that of direct quotes. This makes it difficult to understand where he gets his info unless he includes the citation within the text.

Displeased with this purchase. Simple book to read. Misleading in all its aspects especially the Lies in Islam section. Most of it has been shortened to have a tailored explanation. Book is obviously written by an Islam hater, and not someone who is mutual or someone trying to learn. Simple research or reading on with other sources would easy discredit most of this book.

This is probably the best book on insurance for explaining the poor state of some ALM techniques used in insurance today and why. The authors correctly identify many falacies that actuaries have relied on and how they differ from the more advanced finance that has developed in banking ALM and the capital markets generally.They do, however, get a bit distracted on a couple of topics, and bogged down in some formulas that I didn't think added much to the disccusion. In those moments, you know you're reading the work of university professors rather than practitioners.They could have gone further with their ALM thinking. They could have discussed how mergers between insurance and banking would in the future highlight the differences between the current approaches to ALM, and how financial conglomerates will eventually just relegate insurance to one of many liability businesses, apply option-adjusted transfer prices to insurance products, and take the interest rate risk into consolidated positions. It will not be any more complicated than that. They allude to banking ALM, but don't really drive home any of what I thought were the logical conclusions. They were focused on insurance as stand-alone companies and did not address insurance in the context of a financial conglomerate.Nonetheless, as stated, this is probably the best book on the market as an introduction to insurance ALM and helps dispell many myths and provides some useful history.

As a non insurance specialist, I was curious what the authors have to write about the convergence between the insurance industry and the capital markets. In particular the aspect of derivatives, since I'm in Equity Derivatives. The authors cover nicely the rapid change the insurance industry has faced the last couple of years. Show risk, opportunity, and support many arguments with mathematical models. Even though the authors have an outstanding academic record, the book is aktually fun reading (no boring academic book). References to other articles are extensive and the ALM Survival Toolkit in the Appendix is very well done. I absolutely loved loved loved this book!I had a disastrous date once, I married the guy, and have had the best years of my life since.I loved the realistic connection between Colin and Abby. Their adventures were amusing and engaging. Their banter was witty and sweet.I loved the scripture quotations and discussions peppered throughout the novel.On a steaminess level I would rate this a pleasant PG.This book is definitely worthy of a repeat read!

I loved Blind Date with a Billionaire Professor. Ms. Kelly writes such great books with amazing characters. This is one of my favorites. Both Colin and Abby had issues, but when they gave control to God and gave each other a chance, they found each other to be quite different than their first impressions. If you want a clean, Christian, character driven story, read this one now.

Important to me to know if books are clean, so this is. It's bright and flows well, kept my interest. Interwoven within is the aforementioned problem solving by bringing God to the forefront of their personal lives. No preaching involved. Also important to have no cliffhangers and this concluded well.

When I saw billionaire in the title i almost didn't read it. I grew up in the projects a lot of my life, struggled a lot & learned a lot. My grandparents were God's blessing & teachers in my young life.I was glad to discover a book by Evangeline Kelly a few months ago. I like her incorporation of scriptures with lives, and the inclusion of inner struggles of people no matter what their lot in life is.May you enjoy this book as much as I did!

This was a very clean and wholesome romance.What was great about this story was that there were no games between the future couple (Colin and Abby). Their insecurities about the past, their internal struggle, and their thoughts toward each other were unbidden and real.The pursuit of each other was realistic as well, not some foolish juvenile nonsense, and fueled by their strength in God's Word.I think that their friends (Tammy and Nick) were too intrusive and it should have been more of Colin and Abby who figured things out for themselves so that their character growth would be more appreciated. Also, even after they fully disclose their love for each other, I would have liked to see more of a physical connection as they still seemed a bit wooden/distant when now would have been the time for a nice kiss to show that shift.

This is my third book from this author and it’s my favorite by far. Definitely 5 star worthy. I have read two of her previously released works and I felt something was missing in them. They were still good don’t get me wrong, but I always expected...more. More chemistry (still wanted clean, mind you), but still wanted more of a happily ever after in those books. This book did not disappoint. What I felt was missing in the others was here in this book. I really loved it and I do not regret purchasing it. I highly recommend this book to Christian/clean book readers!

Blind Date with a Billionaire Professor is one of the most enjoyable books that I have in a while. I figured it would be a good book because of the author, but I was pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately, I started the book before I went to bed and stayed up most of the night reading it. This book is well written and filled with quirky characters. I went from laughing to feeling sorry for the Professor to thinking atta-boy Professor. Who would have thought that mushrooms would be so intriguing? Kudos to Ms. Kelly for writing another fantastic book.

I enjoyed this book very much. In the beginning, Colin and Abby were so very different, I couldn't see them as a couple, and figured there would be another character for Colin later in the story. As time passed and they spent more time together, Abby and Colin grew to appreciate and eventually love each other. A GREAT ending for a GREAT story!
