Eichmann in My Hands: A Compelling First-Person Account by the Israela Agent Who Captured Hitler's Chief Executioner, by Peter Z. Malkin

From Publishers Weekly

Adolf Eichmann, "architect of the Holocaust," was seized in Buenos Aires in 1960 by Israeli agents and spirited to Israel disguised as an El Al crewman. Malkin ( Carlos Must Die ) was the agent who made the actual capture. Writing with Stein ( One of the Guys ) he reveals how the most sought-after Nazi war criminal was located, apprehended and brought to trial. Particularly absorbing in this tense, exciting memoir, made possible by the expiration of the Israeli embargo on information about the case, are Malkin's reconstructions of his conversations with the prisoner. Eichmann, obedient and eager to please, comes across as a parody of the orders-worshipping WW II German military man: in one grimly hilarious passage he defecates "by the numbers" and requests permission to wipe himself. Eichmann was hanged in 1962, his ashes scattered at sea, "ensuring that there would be no grave for Nazis, present or future, to turn into a shrine." First serial to Penthouse; Reader's Digest Condensed Books, BOMC and History Book Club selections. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This nonfiction book is an accurate account of how the Mossad captured Adolf Eichmann to be tried for was crimes during WW2.I had the pleasure of meeting him before he passed away.... His novel is fascinating.

The story of Eichmann's movements after the war, his eventual capture and the aftermath was less than one-half of the book. The rest was filler describing the agent's life and career up to the point where he was assigned to "bring Eichmann in". I had no interest in this backstory and was disappointed it took up so much of the book.

This book is more biographical than I had expected, but I am glad. The first- person narrative, description of life in the very-young Israel of the time, and glimpse of the world at large in those times, added alot to what was otherwise a quintessential spy story.

Breathtaking, harrowing, riveting true story about the capture of evil, monster Nazi Adolf Eichmann. I fell in love with masterful, brilliant Israeli covert agent, Peter Z. Malkin, and his talented team. How ironic the tip came from a blind man and his daughter who was dating Eichmann's son. God works in wondrous ways! Suspenseful right to the end...yet includes a bit of humor along the way. For example, when Peter visits his mother on Sabbath dressed in full disguise and the antics of bumbling, food-loving, mechanic Weir who kept me chuckling. How they managed to get Eichmann on the plane was clever and I would have loved to have been on that plane when they announced to the crew who their famous passenger was...to Jerusalem and JUSTICE!

This wasthe best account of his capture I have ever read. I couldn't put this down. I read it over a weekend train ride. I liked the historical context the author gives us as a European jew in the middle east. highly recommended.

there is no way you will be able to put this book down until you finish it completely! It tells the incredible story of how the Israeli secret service, "Mossad" was able to actually infiltrate into south america and kidnap Eichman and smuggle him to Israel. This is the operation which gave the Mossad it's mystique, and made Jew-haters and muslim terrorists shiver in their boots to this day. Wether you are Jewish or not you will be thrilled by the historical accuracy of this chilling and thriloling account....Enjoy!

"It is hardly a secret that innumerable German scientists, formerly engaged in research for the Third Reich, played a decisive role in the rocket programs of the United States and the Soviet Union. What remains largely unknown even today is that others, including more than a few rabid and unrepentant Nazi's, were brought into the employ of the Arab states, most notably Nasser's Egypt, to fight Israel. But we knew..."-Peter Malkin's chapter "Spy"Peter Malkin is the Israeli spy who tackled Adolph Eichmann on a street in Buenos Aires and brought him to Jerusalem to stand trial for masterminding the holocaust, the shoah, along with a handful of other Mossad agents. The term "the final solution" was his. The ideas for the trains, the camps, the ovens were Eichmann's. He is the only person who was executed in Israel by the government. Somehow, he managed to escape detection for 10 years following the Nuremberg trials. This story is about his capture but it is not about his trial; those details are lacking in this book. Peter Malkin like so many other jews and Israelis lost many family members in those war years. A sister stayed behind in Poland with her husband and little children. His family immigrated to palestine when he was a little boy.Malkin, a real life Gabriel Allon, was a master of disguise. He played pranks on close friends and family members, pretending to be someone else totally fooling them. Thus, his mother's comment after one succesful ruse. I had not expected such humor in this tale. One learns also about life in palestine before 1948 during the British mandate when Malkin joined the outlawed Haganah. One learns about the personalities of both Malkin and Eichmann. As I read this, I couldn't help but feel such sadness for Eichmann; he really is to be pitied. How could anyone imagine such cruel treatments to so many millions of people and then carry them out and have no remorse for it? It is to the Israelis' credit that they did not torture him, harass him, play psychological tricks on him as he had done to others. The Israelis came to bring him to justice and that they simply did. To me it is sad that Eichmann came from an evangelical family; how can a christian do such things? This I, as a professed christian myself, cannot understand. He went to the same high school as Hitler, a catholic. So many details of the shoah, Eichmann's many crimes, are left out, but enough are told to understand why Eichmann was a war criminal and that he did not get away with it. How can people still say that these genocides did not happen? Talk about denial. One might succeed in killing millions of people, but you cannot succeed in removing all the evidence and witnesses to such crimes wherever in the world they occur. And it is impossible to do so in this day and age given the technology we have now. Hallelujah.I highly recommend that at least the several movies on the Nuremberg trials be seen too. Surely such trials as these are going on right now in the world today under different circumstances of course; these trials were unprecedented and important and are models of how the international community should respond to crimes such as these.

Featured Recipe: Wine-Braised Beef Cheeks Serves 6 Ingredients 3 cups / 750 ml red wine 1 onion, halved and sliced 2 carrots, peeled and diced 2 stalks celery with leaves, sliced 4 cloves garlic, germ removed 2 fresh bay leaves 1 large sprig rosemary 1/4 teaspoon black peppercorns 2 to 3 beef cheeks, about 3 pounds / 1.4 kg total, trimmed (see page 29) Coarse sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons beef dripping or lard 1/2 calf’s foot, about 1 pound / 450 g, prepared (see page 100) (optional) 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar 1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley Instructions Pour the wine into a large saucepan and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat so the wine bubbles gently. Tip the saucepan slightly away from you and, using a long match, light the wine. Once the flames die out, light it again, and keep lighting it until it no longer flames. Pour the wine into a large bowl (there should be about 21/2 cups / 625 ml). Add the onion, carrots, celery, garlic, bay leaves, rosemary, and peppercorns. Set aside to cool. Cut the beef cheeks into 2 or 3 pieces so that all the pieces are the same size. Place in the marinade, cover, and refrigerate overnight, turning a couple of times if possible. Remove the cheeks from the marinade, pat them dry, and season with salt and pepper. Strain the marinade, keeping the liquid and the solids separate. Preheat the oven to 300°F / 150°C. In a heavy flameproof casserole or Dutch oven, melt half the fat over medium-high heat. When the fat is hot, add the cheeks in batches and brown. Transfer the cheeks to a plate. Lower the heat, add the vegetables, herbs, and peppercorns from the marinade, and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes, or until they soften. Pour in the reserved marinade liquid and bring to a boil. Return the cheeks with any juices to the pan, add the calf’s foot, and return to a boil. Cover the meat with a piece of wet parchment paper and the lid, transfer to the oven, and cook for 3 to 4 hours, or until the cheeks are very tender. Transfer the cheeks and the foot to a plate. Strain the cooking liquid through a sieve into a bowl, pressing on the vegetables to extract all the juice; discard the solids. Let the cooking liquid stand for 5 minutes, then skim off the fat and set the fat aside for another use. Return the cooking liquid to the pan and bring to a boil. Continue to boil until the liquid coats the back of a spoon. Meanwhile, cut the meat and skin from the calf’s foot into small dice; discard the bones. Return the cheeks and diced foot to the reduced sauce and reheat gently. Add the vinegar and taste, adding more salt, pepper, and/or vinegar if necessary. Sprinkle with the parsley and serve. Alternatives: Oxtail, beef shoulder, or shank

Finalist, IACP Awards 2012, Single Subject CategoryNew York Times Notable Cookbook of 2011“Odd Bits is the most informative and enthusiastic book about weird organs you'll ever encounter.”—Philadelphia City Paper, 11/17/11“Readers will be hard-pressed to find a more well researched, interesting and useful cookbook in 2011. McLagan has triumphantly capped her trilogy, and regardless of why you buy the book, you will no longer fear the odd bits, but rather you will be striking up the grill to savor them with enthusiasm, confidence and joy.”—The Gastronomer’s Bookshelf, 9/26/11“It's all here, from beef cheeks to cow's back and calves' brains. It is a tribute to Ms. McLagan's talent as a writer that, even when she is describing the least appealing of her "bits,” her informative text, good humor and contagious enthusiasm will keep readers engaged and amused.” —The Wall Street Journal, 9/24/11“When the James Beard-winning author of Bones(2005) and Fat (2007) releases another cookbook, it's wise to stop for a moment and take a closer look at those Odd Bits.”—LA Weekly, Squid Ink blog, Cookbook of the Week, 9/16/11“This one's a little out there, but stick with me. In the fresh-off-the-press Odd Bits: How to Cook the Rest of the Animal, Jennifer McLagan educates us how to use the "more economical, but less lovable parts of the beast." Plus, the photography looks stunning.”—YumSugar, 10 Foodie Books to Crave For Fall, 9/16/11“It takes a daring author to list a recipe for headcheese as the first recipe in her cookbook. . . Consider that daring author a bit of a renegade in the world of cookbooks. Prior to Odd Bits, she tackled topics unsavory at the time in her cookbooks Fat and Bones and elevated them into something worth savoring. Her introductory recipe for headcheese may be intended to snap you out of thinking that the best parts of the animal are the ones that everyone eats. . . . [Odd Bits] will challenge your cooking skills as much as it will your palate.”—Men's Health, Guy Gourmet, 9/13/11“Judging from the titles of her past two cookbooks, Bones and FAT, you might guess that James Beard Award-winning author Jennifer McLagan has a slightly unconventional approach to cooking. You'd be right. Her latest cookbook, Odd Bits: How to Cook the Rest of the Animal, shows you how to tackle tongue, bone marrow, and all those other strange cuts that you may have tasted in restaurants but haven't had the guts (no pun intended) to make at home yet. . . . Use this informed, entertaining book to get in the fall spirit and make some comforting brisket-vegetable pie or surprisingly not-odd Peruvian Heart Kebabs.”—Bon Appétit, BA Daily blog, 9/13/11“Food writer Jennifer McLagan's single-subject cookbooks, like Fat and Bones, are always a treat. This time, she turns her attention to offal with Odd Bits.”—Eater National, 9/12/11“As a follow-up to her books Bones and Fat, chef and writer Jennifer Mclaghan is now getting into meatier territory, albeit from the perspective of preparing the "odd bits" (think snouts, feet, and organs). Her new book, Odd Bits is aimed at the offal-curious home cook who may want to get into nose-to-tail cooking, but who may have some trepidation about getting their hands messy (or bloody) with organ meats. . . . A recipe for barbecued corned beef is an intriguing and non-threatening entry point (who ever thought of grilling corned beef?), but before long you might find yourself whipping up some chocolate blood ice cream.”—The Food Section, 9/9/11“Anyone can slap a bone-in filet on the grill and have it come out delicious. But it takes a really talented chef to make a gourmet meal out of goat spleen. A talented chef, or this cookbook. You’ve always wanted to be a veal cheek expert.”—Urban Daddy National, 9/8/11“You can buy organic, grass-fed, conscientiously grown meat all you want, but if you're only eating one part of that chicken, cow, or hog, you're wasting a lot of usable protein — and that's totally un-green of you.”—Uncrate, 8/31/11“Jennifer McLagan, award-winning author of Bones and Fat, is on a crusade to bring the nose-to-tail style of cooking and eating out of the closet and back onto to our dining tables. Her mission: restoring our respect for the whole animal, developing a taste for its lesser known parts, and learning how to approach them in the kitchen as confidently as we would a steak or a burger.”  —The Huffington Post, 8/25/11“unique, informative, and readable”—Library Journal, 8/15/11“It is tempting to say that this book is plain offal. But McLagan, who has authored two kindred collections, Bones and Fat, explores more than just innards. As the cover hints with its photo of two severed pig's feet, all sorts of extremities find their way to the table in this 100-recipe autopsy. It is perhaps the perfect gift for the host who has dreamt of announcing that the evening's meal will be ravioli of brains and morels, or heart burgers, or crispy testicles. McLagan puts the face back in preface with an intriguing 11-page introduction that places the odd bits in historical perspective and explores our loss of food literacy in the age of the supermarket. As the chapters progress from head to tail, there are also fascinating explorations of topics such as the wonders of tripe and how to choose a great neck. Even the meager duck heart and the fleshy cockscomb get their due. It's on to dessert: a tub of chocolate blood ice cream, which employs ginger, Grand Marnier and a half-cup of pork blood. McLagan earns linguistic points for exploring the derivation of such terms as sweetbread and head cheese. (Sept.)”—Publishers Weekly, 5/16/11“As an admirer of McLagan’s previous books as well as a cook and writer increasingly aware of the importance of using more than just the tender refined parts of animals and avoiding waste, I know of no other book this season more welcome than this one devoted to exploring the whole animal. McLagan comes through again. Thank you.”—Michael Ruhlman, author of Ratio: The Simple Codes Behind the Craft of Everyday Cooking and Charcuterie: The Craft of Salting, Smoking, and Curing  “Let Jennifer McLagan take you by the trotter and lead you through the odd bits. Hang on, surely some mistake: the good bits!”—Fergus Henderson, author of The Whole Beast: Nose to Tail Eating"Enormously interesting and appealing...This is as wonderful an introduction to "odd bits" as you'll find. McLagan is unabashed in her exploration of these meats."—Clifford Wright, thezesterdaily.comPraise for Fat McLagan’s book is a smart, sensual celebration of the flavorful animal fats prized by chefs and shunned by a generation of lipo-phobes. Her French Fries in Lard may change your life forever.  —People Magazine Jennifer McLagan’s cookbooks are joyously contrarian affairs. [Fat] is a rollicking journey through the kingdom of unrepentant, glorious, and filthy rich fat.—T. Susan Chang, The Boston Globe Persuasively arguing that the never-ending quest for “health” has gone too far, McLagan’s elegant and informed look at this most maligned ingredient is appropriately unctuous.—Publisher’s Weekly (Starred Review)

Once upon a time in the United States when you stood before a meat counter in the supermarket or butcher shop, you saw 95% of the animal - its ins & outs - on display for sale. No more. Today you're lucky to see 15% of the carcass; the remaining 85% goes elsewhere because very little is wasted. This decline in variety parallels the decline in the ability to cook from scratch. Big corporations thrive on the squeamishness of the ignorant. Here comes Jennifer McLagan to attempt to reverse the trend. Odd Bits: How to Cook the Rest of the Animal will be joining other useful cookbooks, such as these: Unmentionable Cuisine[1979] by Calvin W. Schwabe; Time-Life Good Cooks series, Variety Meats[1982] by Richard Olney; The Whole Beast[2004] by Fergus Henderson. Numerous other cookbooks, both ethnic and popular, from the early to mid-20th century when almost the entire beast was for sale and those behind the meat counter actually gave excellent advice on how to cook what they sold are also great sources of useful advice and recipes.

Jennifer McLagan has written a series of books about foods that are misunderstood, unappreciated, and underused. "Odd Bits: How to Cook the Rest of the Animal" focuses on those parts less glorious than prime rib and crown roast but likely more delicious, nutritious, and versatile, foods such as pig's feet, turkey liver, and beef tongue. This book is a valuable asset given the movement in the US toward real food. The classic French philosophy of using the entire animal resonates in McLagan's book, bringing the art of "les abbats" to non-gallic tables.McLagan sprinkles her treatise with insights from a lifetime of preparing these neglected foods, and gives us a multitude of ways to add interest, flavor, and tradition back into our kitchens and into our lives.

This book is so much fun. I've been looking for a head cheese recipe for years since my Grand mother has Alzheimers and can no longer remember hers. :-( This was like 1 of 2 books I could find that had a head cheese recipe. Of all the meats books that are out there including charcuterie making books- sigh! The recipe was a little different then I'm used to but still good none the less. Plus there are other cool recipes like Bone Marrow Dumplings and Lamb Cobbler to make up for it. If like anything new, odd and out of the box, this book is for you for sure. However, if you are looking for a general reference on regular meat like pork chops and chicken, then pass this one up. This book is not for the faint at heart and a lot of the meat used in the book require a bit of resourcefulness. Many of these dishes remind me of something I might see on Andrew Zimmern which is why I love it. Proceed with caution if the idea of cow's brain grosses you out.

A return to the future book for us down here in the South. Using the "odd bits" has been a way of life for a long time, but Ms. McLagan takes them to new culinary heights. If anyone is a "picky eater" and squeamish about foods, it would be me, even though I live where gizzards, cracklin and pigs knuckles can be found at the local meat markets. But I am a changed woman. Ms. McLagan's Brain Ravioli in Morel sauce is decadently smooth and rich, and from now on, I will think twice before putting all that delicious marrow into my soup and will save it for Marrow and Sweet Peas. Crispy Testicles with Onion, Pepper and Caper Sauce - once you taste this absolutely delicious dish, you will move on from the part and be a true believer. And I love her "tongue in cheek" writing style.

This is one of the most beautiful cookbooks I own. Visually stunning, well laid out and organized, informative, and entertaining.I brined and poached a beef tongue for the first time--to good outcome!--using the book's very clear recipes and instructions. I enjoyed the author's narrative and a delicious hash. Even my husband, who typically is not a fan of odd bits, enjoyed the meal(s) very much.Even if you cook nothing from this book, it is a wonderful read. You can pick it up and open it to any page and find some anecdote, photo, or bit of culinary history to delight you.

GREAT BOOK, great pictures, techniques, love some of the bone marrow recipes. Books like this you buy for the information, the techniques, the basic stocks, aspics, etc... not so much the recipes. THe bone marrow and mushroom custard, rich, delicious, perfect. Love the tripe techniques, the detail about preparing these "odd bits" Dont get me wrong the recipes are great, but you buy a book like this for the techniques, cooking methods, cooking times, flavor profiles. If your a real chef, hardcore home cook, farmer, butcher, sausage maker, hunter, do yourself a favour and buy this book. Along with Bones, and Fat, trust me, you could probably get all three for 60 bucks. WELL WORTH IT

Hulk, Vol. 1: Red Hulk, by Jeph Loeb

From Booklist

Loeb, Marvel’s go-to guy for massive superhero chaos, is the ideal philosophical match for the Hulk. Just as the Hulk’s strength grows more catastrophic the angrier he gets, Loeb’s stories escalate in destruction and guest stars (Iron Man, Thor, and Wolverine, to name just a fraction) with each page. McGuinness’ art is likewise suitable to the scale of the action, given its immense and solid figures, which possess a rounded and bulbous cartoonishness that refreshingly does not conform to the modern manga-suggestive standard. Loeb ostensibly hangs his tale on a mystery, as with his Batman stories Hush (2003) and Long Halloween (2007), as the heroes pursue the identity of the Hulk’s murderous red doppelgänger. What you don’t get here is a solution, as the mystery gimmick must support the numerous battles that are contained in forthcoming entries. What you do get is large-scale superhero action that will please those looking for a widescreen extravaganza without too much story but with loads and loads of energy. Grades 6-12. --Jesse Karp

The Hulk series is on sale and the kid in me cannot pass it up. Comic books is what motivated me to read 45 years ago! Thousands of books later I am back where I started! Such fun.

I am not a regular comic reader. I liked the idea behind this so I decided to pick it up. The story was all over the place and every couple of pages it seemed to take a crazy turn that made it hard to follow. Maybe this is just normal comic plot twists, but it threw me off.

This volume of stories introduces the Red Hulk, a mysterious red-skinned and particularly malevolent version of the Hulk who is systematically taking out one super hero after another. Essentially a series of epic battles, the storyline isn't anything complex, though the question of just who the Red Hulk is adds a mystery component that does throw a few wrinkles into things. Co-starring several of the Avengers and various other super heroes, the Red Hulk saga is wonderfully drawn and the artistic style really conveys the raw power of the numerous battles between the villain and the likes of Iron Man, She-Hulk, Thor, and of course the real Hulk. The script isn't about the dialogue or philosophy, but it drives the nonstop action without missing a beat. In some ways a very retro kind of comic book story, the kind before the medium tried to "grow up", Red Hulk is a great battle royal that never ceases to entertain.

This was the beginning of the epic story on Red Hulk. It was meant to be a FUN book that didn't take things as serious as other books. A lot of people gave it a bad review because of the over-the-top elements/jokes. Those people only missed out because Jeph Loeb IS an amazing writer and Ed McGuiness is a brilliant artist. This was just the beginning of a truly amazing book. The main purpose of the book was to introduce the Red Hulk and create conflict for further stories and to be fun.I came to this book because I was intrigued with the idea of a Red Hulk. I saw some interviews and found out that Jeph is a long time Hulk fan. Jeph had used some key elements from the Hulk stories throughout the book. He also had clues as to the identity of Red Hulk and his motivation. All of the elements of a great story are here: intriguing characters, big mystery, lots of conflict, character growth. You have to look at Hulk vol 1-6 in order to get the big picture. It's long and epic but also brilliant and well worth the wait.

I haven't really read a whole lot of Hulk comics, but once I saw Jeph Loeb as the writer I knew I had to read it. While this is far from Loeb's best work I did find it entertaining although lacking in depth. If you are expecting this to be as good as Loeb's take on Batman you will be sorely disappointed. I recommend Red Hulk anyway.

I thoroughly enjoyed Planet Hulk and World War Hulk was an adequate attempt at closure towards Hulk's expulsion from Earth. However, I was a little disappointed with the first volume of the new Hulk book. Especially considering my love of Jeph Loeb's work on Batman and his Colors series. Seemed to do away with any remnants of Hulk's superior intellect from Planet Hulk or his supreme power from the aftermath. Guess I missed the boat on this one.

Good comic, minor kindle zoom issues for some text. Not as good (IMO) as the Planet/WW Hulk stuff, so start there if on the fence.

Great art and action scenes, not much of a story though, kinda shallow. But for what it is, i enjoyed it. Dont expect a "Planet Hulk" or "World War Hulk" type of experience and you'll be fine.

I remember these from 50 years ago. (yikes!) Now that my grandchildren have started reading, I was really excited to see that the Classics Illustrated is in print again. I will be purchasing a lot of these. This is a great introduction to classic literature. I know that for me these books are not shortcuts. They introduced me to amazing stories that I would eventually, as my reading skills progressed, go on to read the full length versions.

I have been blessed with 8 children and the oldest is 11. We are followers of Jesus. My aim is to find good literature for my children to read because excellence is a reflection of the God we serve. All four books in this series are simply amazing! They remind me of CS Lewis in that there are so many parallels from the book to our Christian walk that it is incredibly encouraging. The stories in the series are engaging! Book 1 is required reading for my homeschool 6th grade students. My 11 year old finished it in days and then read through the subsequent three books in a couple of weeks. He is now re-reading them. I enjoyed the books as much as he did! That is the other nod to CS Lewis - children's literature that is gratifying for adults also!

This is a war story. A compelling, intriguing, sometimes quirky but deeply moral war story. This is the kind of story that helps us believe that we could stand and be counted if called upon to do so. This is a story that feeds the imagination and stretches the soul and it is a beautiful testimony to the power of family. It is a very good story to have in our moral imaginations.Getting into the early pages is more than a bit disorienting. Like Middle Earth, we have humans and other creatures cohabiting in a war torn land. Unlike Middle Earth, the names are goofy and seem like a long series of smart jokes. It was enormously helpful for me to know that Mr. Peterson intended this to be the "vastness of Lord of the Rings" with the "whimsey of the Princess Bride". I tend to prefer more serious character sketches but once I allowed myself to get into the style, I found that it actually works really well."Oh, yes, the people of Skree were quite free, as long as they were in their homes by midnight. And as long as they bore no weapons, and they didn’t complain when their fellow Skreeans were occasionally taken away across the sea, never to be seen again. But other than the cruel Fangs and the constant threat of death and torture, there wasn’t much to fear in Skree."It is clear from the introduction that we have an oppressed people who are living a shadow of real life. We know right away that this is a story about good versus evil and that the characters we are about to fall in love with are suffering. The first portion of the book uses humor and quirkiness to reveal this tension. Like any good epic, this home setting is peppered with questions about identity, purpose and intention. The characters are sketched with the promise that they will be filled in as we go - but that they themselves still have much to learn about their history and how that will reveal their future. It is a very good setup and the layers are pulled back slowly. The quirkiness dissipates when the hero struggle begins to emerge. We still have weird names and strange creatures with goofy tendencies, but those become servants of the text instead of the focus once the children are in jail. What I found particularly rewarding about this text is that is does not hold back on the need for people to behave in heroic ways even when it may cost them everything. There aren't many cheap saves or easy outs. This is a dark and dangerous culture war and it requires character, love, faith and hope to survive. The family context is gorgeous. It is so authentic. All of the normal family battles are present but they are met with love and loyalty and faith. Faith in each other and in The Maker and His providence. An excellent first book in a series that I can't wait to unpack.I would rate the intensity of this book as being on par with the early Harry Potter books or The Hobbit. More intense and mildly violent than Narnia or The Green Ember but just as moral, wholesome and heroic. In fact, there are a number of things in the text which remind me of the HP books. There is no witchcraft or wizardry but there are mythical creatures who are otherworldly and there are some questions about one character who was human and is now somehow altered. Classic fantasy type of stuff.Like The Green Ember, a new book with an old soul.

I borrowed this book from the library while on a trip out of town. I found myself laughing aloud right from the very beginning, and even stopped to share a few lines with my curious travelling companions. Peterson's writing is rich and deeply meaningful ~ broken up by moments of roaring laughter. When I arrived home, I immediately purchased a copy of the book for my very own--to place on the shelf right alongside the classics, such as C.S. Lewis's Narnia tales. See ~ it's not just a children's book! My children BEGGED me to read it to them, so I obliged. Each night, they would beg for just ONE more chapter. This book revolutionized our nightly read-aloud time! I used to have a youngster who would rather go to sleep at night than have a story read to him. NOT ANYMORE. Now my older children (ages 10 and 7) cannot wait for story time. This book, by far, is their FAVORITE BOOK. EVER WRITTEN. That said--the book is not for the faint of heart. I have a sensitive 7 year old and I was afraid this book would be too "scary" for him. I let him decide. The epic tale of good vs. evil and the adventure of it all won him over. Peterson has a way of doing that.As far as what age this book is appropriate for? I would say it depends on the child, but for a rule of thumb I would hold off until the child has a firm grasp on real vs. make-believe. I have not read this to my kindergartner b/c he would be half expecting an army of fangs to invade our neighborhood. I suggest buying the book (oh, do I ever!!!) and letting your sensitive children decide for themselves as you tackle a chapter or two. You WILL end up reading it eventually. You MUST! So grab a copy and read it yourself, and tuck it on the shelf until you think the little ones are ready. In our house, we share all kinds of "inside jokes" related to Peterson's books. It's become a treasure that we all carry a piece of in our hearts. A family language, of sorts. Despite the fact that our local library carries the series ~ we've purchased each book as we go along. They are part of our family now, and I look forward to the day my children pass these titles down to their own families! A sweet heritage. Thank you to the author, Andrew Peterson, for putting such beauty into the world that we can all belly-up to.
