My 4-year-old son picked this book out at the library (I think he was attracted by the cover picture of children ice skating, a hobby he too enjoys). When I read it to him at home, I was surprised at how engaging it was for me, being that it is a book written for a younger audience. The author certainly researched her subject matter. My son and I both learned a great deal about the Netherlands in the early 1940s, and the history of ice skating. The Elfstedentocht, the speed skating race in the northern province of Friesland, I had never heard of before reading this book. Maybe one day my son will travel to the land of his ancestors and compete in this race! This excellent book could certainly inspire an interest in a venture of that nature. I certainly would recommend this book, both for its content, and the captivating artwork.

Ever since I read that nonsensical children's book "Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates" by Mary Mapes Dodge, I am very leary of US authors writing historical novels about other countries; I don't even bother to open them.This book is, on the other hand, is wonderful!I have three relatives who rode the Elfstedentocht. Because I inherited the Elfstedentocht medals ("kruisjes") of my aunt's 3 tours and one from my grandmother, I find myself often explaining the uniqueness, severity and hardship (my aunt lost her front teeths; my grandmother froze her toes in 1909)of this race to my English speaking grandchildren, I ordered this book.In addition to writing a nice story to go along with facts, Louise Borden has done an outstanding job of reviewing this incredible race and explaining the Dutch obssession with speed skating. This winter (2010-2011) we almost had another Elfstentocht. It was not to be. Hopefully next winter, or, as they say in Friesland "It sil heve!" (It shall happen!).Jitske Bergman

My children were captivated by this story! I appreciate how it tells of hardships faced by youth during WWII yet does so in a way that my sensitive and imaginative kids could process. It also renewed their interest in ice skating!

What an incredible story about the heroism of an ordinary child during the Nazi occupation. I had to push through tears reading it to my child during our study of WWII. The story and images kept all of us engaged. One we will read again, for sure.

Good story, but I rated it a four instead of a five because I felt that it had too much unnecessary detail that took away from the enjoyment of reading it to others.

Loved this book. Having been born in The Netherlands, I like reading books that take place there. The pictures are great. It is a good, true story about bravery, persistence and courage. It also gives some history of skating and what life was like during the war. This Oma is excited to read this book to her grandchildren!

This was a beautiful book. Compelling, full of history and emotion. The way the author showed how celebrities and ordinary folk alike have extraordinary strength was masterful. The young boy Piet is inspired to have great courage by stories of Pim Mulier, the famous skater of the Elfstedentocht (Eleven Towns Race). I would compare this to Lois Lowry's Number the Stars, which is for older children certainly, but also about young people being much braver than they thought they could be while caught up in the tragedy of World War II.

Although this is now 30 years past its original date of publication, the writing is as timely today as then. I loved this book, as all of Kathleen Norris's works. This is very special as it provides so much insight to the human components of the truly faithful, awe inspiring that the dedication of the Benedictine Monasteries have been so solid for over 1500 years. This book shares the current story so well. It is full of delightful realities, most heartwarming and very very real. Anyone questioning "religion"s place in this world, it is now 2017 as I write, would be amazed at its fruits. Thank you Kathleen.

Read this book slowly and savor it and reflect on it. Norris does not try to persuade you or convince you of anything. Instead, she details some portion of her spiritual journey and a lot of research lying behind what she encounters. If you feel any attraction to the spiritual life, explore it with her as she spends time both in retreat in a monastery and in the world of the Dakotas. The book is written in short chapters and thus is easy to read in bits and pieces, but after while this reader became so enamored of the reflective and the divine within these pages that she just wanted to live in the book.

A RING OF TRUTH: Like Kathleen Norris, I am a Protestant who lives in a small town and have been heavily influenced by being a guest in a Benedictine Monastery many times. Like Norris, I have been invited into the cloister. Her account has the ring of authenticity. By the time I finished the book I realized I was reading while listening to the CD of chants prepared at the monastery I most often visit.WHO WILL LIKE THIS BOOK? Norris is a poet. This book is a collection of sketches from inside the monastery, from monastic history, from her own small town, from her vacations, and from the cities she has lived and worked in. Some chapters are long, while others are short. Her themes bounce from chapter to chapter. If you like poetic imagery written in prose and are interested in this theme, you will like this book.WHO WILL NOT LIKE THIS BOOK? If you like to read technical manuals and books with finely structured outlines, you will probably not like this book. You may feel that Norris rambles too much and doesn't stay with her main point.

As a traditional-leaning Catholic, I was skeptical when a trusted friend recommended this--a sort of memoir by a Protestant woman who's a Benedictine oblate at one of the more liberal Catholic monasteries in the US. But it turned out to be quite good, in part because of her sometimes very different perspective on things. Definitely glad I bought this one.

Such a lovely journey through the heart of oneself and of the world. Her writing brings me peace with each gentle insight.

One of the elements of Kathleen Norris which makes reading her so fundamentally satisfying is her ability to weave the words and thoughts of others so seamlessly into her own observations of endeavoring to live a life of faith. "The Cloister Walk" seems to do this with greater facility and to greater effect than "Dakota: A Spiritual Geography."In "The Cloister Walk," Norris, an apathetic Christian turned agnostic turned yearning Protestant, relates her experiences (physical and spiritual) as an oblate with the Benedictines. This is an accessible memoir of one woman's account of opening the eyes of her heart in her search for God and one that can be enjoyed by anyone striving to hear a still small voice within.

As a lapsed Catholic and a searching person for the meaning of organized religion in my life, I found this book rich with bursts of insight. The various personalities in religion; aspects of life within the Benedictine church; and a variety of small, beautiful critical thinking essays on the meanings of icons and values are some of the topics Norris explores in her chapters.Overall, they are thought-provoking and reveal a person who is more than a visitor to the ways of the Benedictine.I only gave four stars, since I found her writing style a bit distracting and the organization of the book not exactly conducive to easy reading. It's true that each chapter is a handful, but the editor might have done Norris a favor by facilitating the outline of the book.

I borrowed a library copy of this book and liked it so much. It has the potential to be a private study book. When I returned the library their copy I went out and bought my own book.

I bought a new Kindle Fire, but could not come to grips with the differences with my Kindle, which I have been using for about seven years. This so-called "Complete Guide" is badly written and not understandable. It is not any kind of "guide" but just a series of comments on differences with previous models. Utterly useless and a waste of time and money! Big black mark for Amazon! Please replace with a proper GUIDE.

Very helpful. I am older (over 60) and while my tech capabilities aren't that bad, I wanted to know how to set the new Kindle Fire HD 10 correctly. This little booklet filled the bill.

I was really disappointed after reading this. I thought there would be a lot of tips and good information in there, considering my kindle recommended it. I was just disappointed, I have never had a kindle before and thought I would learn things I didnt know. Unless you really want to waste $3.23 and have it take space in your kindle, just google the statistics. I also found more tips watching you tube videos. So I just kissed my $3.23 good bye.

Haven't been in the later chapters. This is the only book i could find for the 10. I DON'T like to do reviews.

Makes using my Kindle for more than books or puzzles a LOT easier! Very handy.

Didn't like at all. It does not tell you what to do or how to fix a problem. Just tells the different things it should do. Waste of money.

About the Author

Jody Culkin is an artist and teacher. Her comic, "Arduino!" has been translated into 12 languages and her illustrations have appeared in Make magazine. She has received grants and awards from the National Science Foundation, the New York State Council on the arts and many other organizations. She is currently a Professor at CUNY's Borough of Manhattan Community College in the Media Arts and Technology Department. She has a BA from Harvard University in Visual Studies and an MPS from NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program. Jody enjoys showing projects at the annual New York City World Maker Faire.Eric Hagan is an interactive and kinetic artist and assistant professor based out of Astoria, NY. He has written articles for publications including Make: magazine and Popular Science. He has also worked on several art installation projects around New York City including the annual holiday windows on 5th Avenue and Kara Walker's A Subtlety. This beginnner's guide to the popular Arduino microcontroller family by author-illustrator Jody Culkin and interactive artist Eric Hagan nicely fills a niche in the existing literature between Massimo Banzi and Michael Shiloh's classic "Getting Started with Arduino" and the more advanced books by folks like Simon Monk and Steve Gold. It's a particularly good choice for someone with no electronics background who may need a bit more hand-holding than Banzi and Shiloh can provide in their little book. Concepts are explained in plain language with just the right technical depth to impart understanding and maintain interest without getting bogged down, and the skills developed in the hands-on projects build smoothly on one another to create a compact but robust curriculum in basic electronics.

FINALLY I'm learning to program and upload to the arduino boards in my astronomy equipment. Great book. Some things are repeated to much (for a 10 year old) but I wanted it EASIER rather than HARDER and this is great for this old 61 year old guy. I'm writing and uploaded to the board in minutes with this book. I recommend it highly. I purchased this with the 27 - super kit and uno board. Very pleased with kit and book.

With Arduino, and this book, it's easy to start learning electronics. The book contains very good explanations of electronics basics, features nice projects to build, and is beautifully illustrated.

As a beginner book this was quite thorough good overall view of all components and how to use Arduino.

This book does an excellent job of showing and explaining how basic circuits are created and how the components of Ohm's Law--voltage, current and resistance--work together and can be manipulated using resistors, potentiometers, LEDs, and switches. The book also shows how to use a popular and inexpensive Arduino Uno computer and an experimenter's breadboard to create "physical computing" circuits that can be controlled with simple programs, or "sketches" as they are known in Arduino world. I am not fond, however, of the book's title, "Learn Electronics with Arduino," unless there is a plan to continue with a series of books that teach other aspects of basic electronics, including capacitance and inductance, with an Arduino's help. "Electronics" itself consists of much more than Ohm's Law and open or closed circuits. Still, this is a fine book for young and young-at-heart experimenters who want to learn basic circuitry and basic physical computing, such as controlling servos or putting light-sensitive photoresistors or passive infrared motion sensors to practical use.(My thanks to O'Reilly Media for providing an advance reading copy for review.)

This book is great. It explains the basics of electronics needed to work with microcontrollers like Arduino in clear, succinct language, drawings, and diagrams. Their highly visual style is very good for beginners. The language is accessible to middle school students, yet helpful for adults who are new to the subject as well. I'll use this book in my classes for sure.

This is one of the best books produced in 2016. Matti Friedman writes about Israel, the Middle East, and the political and personal implications of war from a unique perspective. Born in Canada and an immigrant to Israel as a teenager, Friedman shares his skepticism towards Israel's military involvement in Lebanon. As a former combat soldier in the Israel/Lebanon conflict that occurred in the 90s and current reservist, Friedman honestly and poignantly paints a picture of a country whose attitude towards war and the military spans from the anti-war mothers of the kibbutzim, to the apolitical teenage soldiers who are performing their compulsory duties as members of a diverse set of troops, to right-wingers who justify war with keeping the country safe from terrorists. It is indeed a complicated country - and while all characters, including the author, share different views of militarism and war, all agree on one common goal: the survival of the world's only Jewish state.As Western consumers of news (whom Friedman is clearly addressing as his audience in this book), we are constantly inundated with images of the Middle East and Israel. Generally, progressive news outlets tend to view Israel's military operations unfavorably - that is, Israel's military tactics are generally criticized, and consumers of the news are not really getting the full picture of the Middle East in general, or Israel's relationship to it. Friedman also has a journalistic background and has covered Israel while working for the Associated Press. These experiences, while not mentioned explicitly in the book, I believe served as motivating factors for the subject matter of this text.The most powerful portion of this text (to me) was the last, when Friedman recounts a visit he took to Lebanon, where he was stationed whilst a soldier in the IDF. As an Israeli/Canadian dual citizen, he could only enter into Lebanon as a Canadian, and had to hide throughout his visit 1) his Jewish identity; 2) his Israeli citizenship; and 3) his service to the IDF. The most powerful part is when he was on his way to the Pumpkin (the outpost where he was stationed in the 90s) in southern Lebanon, and remarks that he "had traveled 12,000 miles (from Toronto) to arrive 20 miles from" where his family's home was located in northern Israel. This gives you a real sense of how serious (and sad) the divide of a border can truly be, especially in a place as volatile as the Middle East.

A good story about the coming of age / rite of passage experience that all young Israeli's go through when they serve in the military. In this instance it was against the backdrop of serving in the buffer zone of southern Lebanon in the mid-nineties. The buffer was supposed to prevent terrorists from infiltrating into northern Israel but the isolated strongpoints ended up being targets for Hezballah attacks. Many Israeli military casualties were incurred which led to protests in Israel and ultimately withdrawal from Lebanon. Years later the author visits Lebanon and hears the Hezballah account of the conflict. The Israeli withdrawal was considered a victory by Hezballah.This is a good account of citizen soldiers serving in direct defense of their country.

Pumpkinflowers. A book about Israel v. Lebanon. I don't know how I stumbled across this book but I'm grateful that I did. I almost didn't read it. I'm not enamored of soldier stories and when he explained his layout of topics, I thought, "Nope. This is not something that will interest me at all." But then despite that thought I began to read. Short chapters, many about 5 pages. Easy segments. By the end of the first chapter I knew I had found something special. Something to really delve into. A story of soldiers as people, people integrated into two societies -- the military and real life. If they survive. Moving. Humanizing. Contemplative. Brilliant. I highly recommend it. Pumpkin is where they were stationed. Flower was their slang for the dead. Read it. Moving.

A well written account of a forgotten war where young Israelis were wounded and died protecting the North of Israel in the buffer Zone between Lebanon and Israel in the nineties. At an out post called the Pumpkin Friedman describes the events over these years in simple but powerful language.Battling Hezbollah militants in a time when the 'suicide bomber' was yet to make a mark, the boys on the Pumpkin obeyed orders and wished for the normal life of a teenager. This story is a tribute to those boys, some of whom never returned to their families and a look at the political climate of Israel and the Middle East at the time.Israel is a country forever struggling to maintain their sovereign right to the land surrounded by hostile countries who would like to annihilate them.I can't imagine how it would be to live with the constant threat of rockets being fired over the border into the country and almost daily attacks on the population by suicide bombers and the like.I'm sure everyone would like to see peace in the area but that seems like a pipe dream with the ever growing threats and hostilities.

A soldiers story and one from a sensitive one.As Friedman writes, nothing may be as it seems, especially as it may have been reported by an ignorant , willfully so or not , press. It is not as much a story as a memoir but because it strips away any pretension , or false bravado ,from the author's ( and I suspect by extension others' ) combat experience while recognizing both his and their fears and bravery it is well worth reading. Interestingly, Friedman visits "undercover" and after his military service that area of Lebanon under Hezbollah control in which he had been in combat. That further provides Friedman and therefore the reader with a personal perspective of war that other books seldom do.

To understand where we are it is necessary to understand where we have been. In beautiful prose and a compelling narrative Pumpkinflowers leads you back in time to a forgotten past that gave birth to the present. A people. A nation. A war that has spread far and wide from a small forgotten hill in south Lebanon. We owe a debt of gratitude to the author who has gifted us with this memory. I feel it's weight. To remember. To pass it on. Never to forget. Read this book.
