I updated my review from 5 stars to 4.The author, it seems, has avoided changing the code within the examples offered. Though I'm sure this book was pretty close to spot on when it came out, over the duration of the last year and a half, there are differences that haven't been addressed and therefore I would wholly suggest passing on this book to a more updated learning experience.Don't get me wrong, it's a great book. JavaScript, JQuery, CSS, and HTML5 are quite excellent and still worth the read if that's what you're looking for. However, MySQL and PHP have changed DRASTICALLY and if you learn from this book only you will need to supplement all of the knowledge gained and it will probably only lead to confusion.A few examples:*Salt and Hash: This book dedicates time to salting and hashing using ripemd. Most recently salting and hashing has been automated by the overlords of PHP into a singular function: password_hash(STRING, PRESET_ALGORITHM). There are currently, as far as I know, only two different algorithms to choose from: PASSWORD_BCRYPT or PASSWORD_DEFAULT. This was done because salting and hashing were produced incorrectly on so many sites that PHP's caretakers decided that it would be in everyone's best interest to simplify the process. Keep in mind that the password_hash function will automagically salt the hash so there is no step to do so. To verify the password from hash you would use the password_verify(STRING, HASHED_STRING) and it will return a Boolean.*Sanitiation of User Input: Though important to realize when you're putting user input directly into the page, this book has an absolutely tremendous amount of pages dedicated to sanitizing strings. Honestly it's a large chunk of the PHP sections/code. The problem with the methods the author has prescribed is that they are outdated. Only briefly there is part of a chapter where he touches on prepared statements, which has become the correct way to instantiate MySQL queries. We do not need to sanitize our injected strings when using prepared statements. Why? Because prepared statements literally setup the query and prepare it for specific input. The bind_param() method of the mysqli prepare object makes certain that the input will only be interpreted as it's intended and a string will never be interpreted as a command.

This is a great book, full of information on current web creation technology, covering modern usage of PHP, MySQL, JavaScript and jQuery. It serves as a good reference book, while at the same time, providing brief examples to illustrate how to use each command or function as it is presented. I found the book easy to read and understand, and the examples clear and to the point. When I first opened this book I considered myself a reasonably proficient PHP and MySQL coder, though I was using these technologies as they existed eight years ago, when I first learned them. The book opened my eyes to the newer tools that are now available as well as more modern approaches to coding, including object-oriented programming and the power of jQuery.I think this book would serve a beginning coder well, but would be even more valuable to someone who already has some experience under their belt using one or more of these technologies. This book has become my go-to book for any coding or syntax questions, and a good book to just browse through to learn a new trick or two. I recommend it without hesitation to anyone that would like to improve their programming skills in the covered topics.

After a couple years of coding HTML, CSS, and Javascript/Jquery, I decided to dive into PHP/MySQL to start building some backend chops. To be fair, I'm comparing this book to Learning Web Design by Jennifer Robbins and Javascript/JQuery: The Missing Manual by David Sawyer McFarland, which I consulted to learn all my front-end knowledge and which have to be two of the most straightforward, well-organized, example-driven books I've ever read. Sadly, Nixon's book didn't have the same great qualities. There's no doubt this guy knows PHP backward and forward. The trouble is that he doesn't really seem to know how to convey that knowledge to a beginner. His writing doesn't seem to have much organization to it- there's a lot of "Hey, PHP can do this, oh and while I'm at it, it can also do this. And by the way, it can also do this, but I'm only showing it to you because you really don't want to do it this way." He also, in my opinion, takes for granted that you already understand how internet databases work, which in my case was a poor assumption. My biggest complaint is the lack of PRACTICAL examples. For every concept he describes, he provides a small, isolated example, but they often don't make sense because you don't understand WHY or in what context he's trying to perform the action he's performing. I'm the kind of guy that really needs to see the bigger picture in order to learn what each detail is contributing to it. And those bigger picture examples just weren't there for me.All in all, I think the author really knows what he's talking about and probably provides a lot of good information, but as a complete beginner to PHP and back-end programming, I couldn't get any utility out of it. The writing was just too disorganized. This review does not apply to the Javascript section of the book, as I already know how to code JS and didn't read that.

Clear, concise and referential guide to the modern web browser and its major components, the SQL database, the horrid JavaScript and its even worse cousin, PHP.I read half the book online flying to Florida and back. The text is to the point, with enough small examples for immediate comprehension, but not so much as to bog down with lethargic samples. When I got back, I was able to fire up my own website and start working with SQL!Perhaps my only regret is that the SQL section is so short. Still, there are lots of other books entirely on that subject, and more info on each topic would have inflated this book to a massive thousand pager.Kudos for including some up to date advice on thwarting SQL injection attacks!

This book is a very enjoyable read. It dives into reasons some interracial religious organizations decide to become interracial, and what the members within think. It is more of a sociological experiment of six organizations with carefully thought out questions by the authors and utter transparency in the answers of the respondents. Very interesting!!

This is a smart book for two reasons: it is the original sin of the United States and it is current referring to six cases within the country. It is very American because the subject is very American. It is also an oxymoron - church congregations should by definition be a place of acceptance and love, but also an arena for subtle racial tension. The emphasis of this book was not to solve a national problem but to manage it within a congregation. I found this approach sensible as the examples and churches illustrated were real. Also, the title sets the reader up for a challenge.Chapter two approaches a unilateral need in every culture, the need to belong. Using Messiah Fellowship in L.A and the life of Eddie (Filipino Catholic) the authors track his story emphasizing how social integration between a Filipino culture and a non-Filipino culture would make for a new kind of church. One Filipino member is quoted addressing how difficult it was to socialize with other ethnic groups. Another was interviewed revealing that Filipino people avoid individuals who are direct and confronting. With this in mind the authors address division by small groups concluding that the best connection between cultures in this church was through worshiping God together.Chapter four offers a provoking title using the word `white' and the example of Pastor Barnes, the African American at Crosstown Community Church. The honesty in this chapter opens up a dialogue that hopefully finds a national platform to engage in the `real world.' The issue was not `why are non-whites joining the church' but `why whites are leaving the church.' The refreshing (although negative) emphasis was the concern of the non-white Christian over the white Christian.Chapter seven was almost humorous in its title that `Jesus is color-blind' using the example of Emmanuel Bible College. At least a quarter of the student body is non-white and a visit to the cafeteria reveals tables filled with uniform color. Blacks, whites, Latino's and Asians. The unofficial uniforms for administrators and the faculty add to this separatist atmosphere. Another ingredient to the mix is the way each culture views matters of faith. The surprising factor is the white students and faculty is blinded to the reality of separatism on campus. After being asked the question, `how the ethnic groups get along' the whites respond, `by and large, very well.' This color blindness seems to put non-white students into a no-win situation. If students of color try and explain themselves they are viewed as being divisive. Political correctness seems to be a goal that this organization strives for, but unless there is an open dialogue on issues of race and cultural practice, the white view remains dominant - `we all get along very well.'The faculty was united in their desire for the mission of the organization to embrace diversity as a priority. But the reasons behind this united effort were diverse in and of themselves. The first was the idea that the organization had something every ethnic group should know. The second was that the church represented in the world was diverse so the student body should be diverse. The third was the idea that students with different cultural background bring a fuller perspective to matters of faith. But this was only promoted by the faculty not the administration.Against All Odds was a compelling read that concluded with a challenge. The nurse in me loves this book! My two year old loves reading it with me. It is a highly educational book and keeps him entertained until the end! Would definitively recommend it for toddler age and up!

My daughters are obsessed with the 2 curious george germ episodes and this book is spot on! They haven't put it down since they got it a few days ago. If you've seen the episodes, then you'll know what to expect. Some reviews said it was "silly", but maybe they hadn't seen the show. Very education and perfect for young children!

Silly, very silly. Not informative, even for a 4 year old.

This is wonderful for your K, 1st, or 2 grader to learn about why we get sick and how to stay healthy.

What an enjoyable book! Part travel book, part cultural study. A thoughtful collection of short essays from pupils of the Bhutan school about their childhood experiences. The stories give a wonderful insight into the culture of this beautiful country. Many, many color pictures. I felt as if I had traveled there myself. Loved it.

I am fascinated by stories about people and history. This culture is rich in history. What stories these young adults told are stories that will live for their future generations and for people like me, people that will never travel and see first hand their lives still emerging in the electric world we live in. I do judge books by their cover and this cover says so much, the traditional clothing of adorable little girls, but in the same picture are the utility poles we have become accustom to seeing everywhere in our "modern society."The stories are great for anyone wanting a get away and you never have to leave your room. A mini vacation with some education on the side.I know I mentioned the photo on the cover, but the photos inside are fabulous as well. I am attaching one of the pictures that shows their landscape from the monks view. Pretty awesome.This is the kind of book you can get that person that has everything :)

I have checked this book out of the library on several occasions to use as a 'reference manual' while making mosaics. I like this book so much that I am going to purchase it to add to my collection of books on mosaics.The book is very thorough in explaining technics, materials, and mosaic lingo. There are color photos which accompany the step-by-step instructions, as well as a number of color-coded mosaic patterns. Each time I peruse the book it inspires me to be creative. This book is a must have for beginner as well as advanced mosaicists.

Too much of the book is on the politics of the NYMEX organization. Leah narrates the book on the timeline of all the chairmen of the NYMEX. One by one she lists out all the chairmen Marks, Guttman, Steinhause and Schaeffer. She goes through discursive discussion of the infighting and political battles these chairmen had with their vice chairmen and other board members. Only problem is who really cares? I was looking more for the tawdry locker room stories of the demimonde of traders doing coke on the trading floor or other traders pimping out their clerks. You can also tell the author has no clue in economics. Toward the end of the book she is actually questioning the US dollar (the reserve currency of the world) as being worthless in favor of oil becoming a world backed currency or a petro backed US dollar. Haahaaahaha! Are you kidding me? This was in '08, the author was making these types of statements in the book, still not understandable. Like that will solve the problem! Backing the US dollar with a volatile commodity that went to $147 and then crashed to $30 in '08. Will someone tell Leah that currencies are supposed to be stable to facilitate an economy in the buying and selling of goods.

It's impossible for me to hear the soft roar of the gasoline pump as it feeds my hungry tank without thinking about this terrific book by Leah McGrath Goodman. She lays it all out for you. The greed, deception, manipulation, and downright fraud of the oil trading business. It's astonishing that we let these thieves ratchet up the price of oil using every illusory trick in the book, while we pull into the local station and complain under our breath about the price of a gallon of gas steadily increasing while we (nor anyone in power who've all been bought and paid for by big oil) do absolutely nothing about it. Such is our apathetic malaise. Ms. Goodman gives us a great read and I couldn't recommend this great book any higher. Many thanks to her for lifting the veil and letting us see inside.

"The Asylum", by Leah Goodman, is an exciting ride through the complex inner workings of NYMEX, commodities trading, and the oil markets, especially for a novice like myself who is unfamiliar with this world. I couldn't put the book down and read it cover-to-cover over the weekend. The author's skillful turn of phrase and weaving together of the personal and professional lives of the major players made for compelling reading. What a fascinating and riveting story! A must-read for both Wall Street insiders and outsiders! I wonder if there's a sequel? In any event, I eagerly look forward to Ms. Goodman's next book, whatever the subject. She is a truly gifted and talented writer who really knows how to tell a story!

It is rare I give a negative review for a book, but feel compelled to do so in this case. If you are buying this book to get a better understanding of how NYMEX affects current oil prices then stare clear as it fails in every way to offer an explanation. Instead this book is like a series of magazine articles on the various characters who made up the NYMEX during its glory years. Notice i write "magazine article"? Thats because even these profiles lack real depth normally found in a book and instead are incredibly repetitive and bland. There is not a single character in this book who you really feel you have gotten to know even slightly below the surface. So the book fails as both an expose on the oil markets and even as an interesting profile on the traders made up the NYMEX. Other than insiders who may get a chuckle recalling some old friends or foes, I can't think of many people who will not find this book at least 100 pages too long and still very much lacking in depth.

The book is great. I just wish people would get out of the mind-set that we need to rely so heavily on fossil fuels. That's the only reason that shenanigans like this are able to occur. What do you think is going to happen when you idolize something so much? Make the priests rich, that's what! Why don't people understand that cars don't have to run on gas? Cars rely on an internal combustion engine. All that basically is is a little controlled fire going on under your hood. Why does it have to burn gas?! Lots of other things burn. Have you ever seen a forest fire? Why don't we take something that we have a lot of and burn that instead? Like take grass for instance. The planet is literally covered in grasses of all different sorts. AND THEY ALL BURN! If we took all the time and money that we spend on creating/overthrowing dictatorships and governments that sit on top of fossil fuels or drilling thousands of feet into the ocean to extract oil and put it into figuring out how to make an internal combustion engine that runs on grass, we would have one by now. There are lots of other things that burn too. Wood burns, but it would take more time to figure out how to put it into a gas tank. And the hoses and such would probably have to be a lot bigger. Paper burns, but we need paper for other things and it would take a lot of chemicals to process enough to run everyone's cars on. No, I think grass is clearly the answer. Anyway, you should read this book!

From my experience, it takes a bit of thought to be able to share the good news in a way that appeals to people and helps them encounter and commit to Christ. The person primarily responsible for sharing the gospel with me over 40 years ago did so in a way that appealed to my heart and my intellect. I think that this book does the same, perhaps leaning more toward the intellect. In fact, Part Two of the book entitled "Religion and the Opening up of the Mind" points to some questions/issues that often stand in the way of sharing the gospel and people embracing it.To me, this is not an easy book to read and understand, but I think that the topics covered do help people think through some issues and be better able to engage people where they are with the many diverse backgrounds we encounter today.The book is not an easy step-by-step method to success (I doubt there really is such a method), but should help to build the intellectual and spiritual background that will help a person be more effective when sharing the gospel.I'd recommend the book and suggest a thoughtful reading. I had to reread one chapter when I realized I hadn't grasped the message the first time.I'll give this book on one of my sons who himself is on pilgrimage with Jesus and is attracted to and convinced of his life-giving message. I think it will help him in his own walk and as he meets searching people along the way.

Bishop Barron shares his insights so articulately and takes the reader to an understanding which one might not be able to reach on one's own. I highly recommend this book! He gives a thought provoking overview of how Christians can have healthy and fruitful religious dialogue with others, and how this is necessary for a healthy society and evangelization of the Good News about Jesus Christ. He encourages us to be courageous in sharing our beliefs, as well as, charitable in listening to the opinions and beliefs of others. In a loving way we can then "lead others by the hand" to come to a deeper understanding of the truth at work in their hearts, their inner yearning for God, which we all have because we were made by God and for personal relationship with Him. Bishop Barron reminds us that the best way to lead others to Christ is by living a life that is transformed by Christ. He so beautifully compares " the burning bush," that is not consumed by the fire, to us as Christians--who can be lit up with the "fire of God's love." This symbol reflects the person who allows God to transform them by His grace at work in them. Please read this book! It will help renew our culture and our own personal encounters with others, oftentimes with those whom we are close to, who may have a difference of opinion or beliefs than we do.

I am rating this book with one star- not because it is a “bad book” but because I think the title, description, and some other comments were not helpful for me. I figure one star will get people’s attention.I suggest a much better title of this book, more accurate of the content, might be “how to have an intellectual, scholarly discussion with an atheist on the existence of God”. I do not think the book was arguing “religion” but more making a logical argument for the existence of God.Religion is what you have after you agree there is a “God” and in "arguing religion" you are discussing which version of God you follow and why. In my part of the world “arguing religion” is what Catholics do with Protestants or Evangelicals. I was hoping this book would help me have better conversations about our respective religions.If you are looking for a book to “argue religion” between different Christian denominations or maybe Christian vs non-Christian I suggest this is not necessarily the book you are looking for.I also agree with others that this was a difficult read mostly due to the very academic structure and vocabulary of the book. I’m a university graduate so I am used to reading this type of material so it's not that I found it difficult but I was hoping for a book that did not require that I sit with my dictionary app open all the time just to get some idea of what the Bishop was trying to say.

Bishop Robert Barron is a truly amazing priest/bishop. This brief yet profound book is theologically correct but given in love and humility. Buy this book!

Unlike Bishop Barron's usual sermons aimed at the masses, this tome aims for a more scholarly, philosophical approach. He assumes a well-educated audience that can respond to the vocabulary of modern and classical philosophy. His approach is classically Scholastic and he holds up Thomas Aquinas and the great Dominican's skill in disputation as a model while recommending we do argue but do it properly.

I have been following Bishop Baron for years through his word on fire ministry. He is the voice to listen to when you want to hear an intelligent Catholic‘s view about a whole range of topics. This is the first book I’ve read that was written by Bishop Baron, and although I shouldn’t have been, I was surprised to see how well he articulates his thoughts. By that I mean I had a very high respect for his intelligence, but reading this book has added to that. Bishop Baron, like C.S. Lewis, has the uncommon ability to take complex subjects and simplify them without watering down the meaning of what he’s talking about. This book is very important, in my view the most important subject one can talk about. If you have any interest in religion at all, this book is a must read.
