Not that it will necessarily help you with your class, but it is good form to buy the book of the person who is teaching you something for free. With that in mind, I wanted to rate this higher, and I am probably being a little generous with 4 stars. The book is missing some pieces....The sample problems seem to be an afterthought. They are collected in the last chapter of the book, and none are worked out. There is a PDF for the answers. The answers are overly terse and don't provide complete coverage. There are also too few figures and explanatory drawings. Way too little. I was also disappointed with the xerographic b/w printing. Picky yes, but not so much for an expensive book.On the positive side, this is a very mathematical book and it certainly lives up to its quantitative billing. You will do well to remember your Calc3. Also, this 3rd edition is very logically organized and shows years of mastery teaching the material. I would also give high marks for the passion of the authors and the occasional, but useful, commentary about the novelty of certain systems. It helps increase interest in the material.PS Coursera ClassThe Coursera class is perhaps 1/5 as technical as this book. The class uses math that you would expect a biology student to know, whereas this book is clearly based on engineering mathematics. Being mathematical, I find the book quite understandable, with the math supporting the message. For non-mathematicians, the opposite effect may prevail. In my case, the book is definitely a big help in the course, if only to see the material in a different format and with a different approach. Evidently, there is much more to bioelectricity than what is in the course.

Just go look up the Erratum for this thing. The publisher has known about how error prone this book is and still hasn't reissued or issued a better version. Some of my favorites include page 25 where the author writes the equation R = rho*A/L instead or R = rho*L/A (resistance of a wire, elementary stuff), page 133 where the conductive equivalents wrongfully have potential differences, and the majority of the solution manual to be just plain wrong. Seriously, don't even bother using the dang thing.This book is horribly edited and I implore professors looking to assign this book to look elsewhere unless they want their office hours filled with confused students. It is a scam at $70.

I think this book has the potential to be successful. It's fairly well written with explanations that are usually clear, even to persons with minimal biological background. However, it suffers tremendously from the errors that pervade each chapter. From the trivial errors such as misspellings and significant errors like incorrect formulae, it seems that nobody bothered to proofread this edition of the book (3rd). Derivations also tend to be rather difficult to follow, either due to errors, unclear assumptions, or mislabeled or missing equations. I suspect that much of the book was scanned and edited from the previous edition since there are numerous typos that are substitutions of similar looking letters (e.g. I->l). Even worse, many of the original figures in the book are awfully unclear, confusing the subject rather than clarifying it. In many graphs, axis are missing labels and captions are no more helpful. Many of the figures look like they were drawn in MS Word. All in all, a disappointing textbook, especially for a 3rd edition.

This book is next only to "From Neuron to Brain" to understand Neuroscience Basics. It covers a bunch of other topics other than Neuroscience. Worth a reading!

Ok, it’s a comic book on the history of comic books... but it just happens to be THE BEST book, straight up, on the history of comic books. Van Lente chooses just the right moments to help weave the narrative history. Best part: The pages devoted to the women who helped shape the industry.

This is a great book about the history of comics that had me laughing out loud on numerous occasions. It is surprisingly self-aware and easy-to-read. It is full of historical fact and appears rather dense upon first glance, but the narrative style and humor make it hard to put down. The history begins around 1900 and is mostly heavily focused upon what is traditionally considered the Golden and Silver Ages of American comics (approximately 1930s until early 1970s.) Understandably, its hard to write a history focused on the near present. However, I wish there was additional material covering the 80s and 90s. (Hopefully a future edition.) To be clear, this is not a book about superhero comics. Of course, its hard to talk about American comics without discussing superheroes, but the book just a great job of covering all of the other important genres including EC horror and the underground movement of the 70s.My only real complaint, and its a minor one, is that the book has no pretenses to objectivity when it comes to some of the creator disputes involving Siegel and Shuster, McFarlane, etc. The authors even refer to Kirby as "our hero."

A thick but approachable book, this book tells the history of comics, starting from political cartoons and "funnies," through their evolution into collections of funnies, and finally comic books. With a deft hand, the illustrations and even lettering evoke the material of each period, while maintaining a coherent metastyle across the production. Of particular note is the even hand with which the near constant efforts of censorship against comics have been portrayed. As much as this is an excellent introduction for anyone to comics, it is a must-read for any fan of the medium who wants to speak intelligently when defending it. Just fantastic.

The summation of trends and fads of the industry was well done, and I enjoyed the style of illustration, that loose, almost sketchy, type of cartoons. In some places, the writer concentrated too much on some idiosyncratic details of events and people, in my opinion, but so what? It was an enjoyable read and reminded me of the pleasure I had when a child to read comics regularly.

How could this combination not be a natural? Fred Van Lente's Comic Book History of Comics not only looks over a history of a medium that is at once taken for granted and denigrated by snooty idiots but truly appreciated by those with a discerning eye, it is a pleasure to read (and examine, because it's a visual thing, after all) and educational as well. What's not to love?

Good and dense. It covers the major players in comics history and pays respect to the greats. Needed three more words.

I fun and engaging history of comics, one which could have easily been a gimmick. However, Fred Van Lente manages to tell the story of comic in an informative and entertaining way.

Humorous. Thorough. A joy to read!

As an Irish American, I love Jean Grainger's books as they show a real connection, understanding, and love for her country. This one shows her ever growing depth as an author. Other reviewers have explained the story of "What Once Was True." So just let me say that it bridges the "old" Ireland and its people still hurting from the several hundred years of English dominance and their first steps as a free people to the new Ireland-the Irish Tiger. The story, like her other books, gently weaves different cultures, peoples and social mores-some new some old- into the Irish whether countryside or town. Its about family, love, romance, war, learning and growth, all wrapped up in a lovely tale that will break your heart but leave you smiling at the end. I wanted the book to go on and on, and maybe there will be more. What say you Ms Grainger?

Again this author has created a story that feels like home. It's as if you are a member of the Murphy family living all their joys and sorrows. Your soft place to land.Ms. Grainger is a master of character development and shows her characters in 3-D. Her plotting is intricate and satisfying. I have put her on the top of my MUST read authors.

I recently returned from a trip to Ireland. I got to visit an ancient manor named Robinswood and I met the most amazing people. Wait! Just a minute! That was actually a book! Jean Grainger’s newest book will put you right in the midst of Ireland during WW 2 and get you a front row seat to the many changes that the germinated during that time. I do believe this book is among the best she’s written- and I’ve read them all!

Once again this author weaves a tale that draws you in with rich descriptions of the setting and time period. You get to know the characters gradually through their interactions and wonderful dialogue. The story explores the trials and tribulations of two families from both ends of the class system of the time. Although I love fiction related to WWII, it’s always the people in Ms.Graingers books that I enjoy most. Through them I get to experience a different place and time, and this is what makes Ms. Grainger a masterful storyteller in my eyes.

Jean Grainger has done it again! What Once Was True is an extremely well developed story with strong, believable characters. I don't just read Grainger's books, I inhale them. This one, like all of hers, kept me up all night reading until it was finished. Then I was sad because I will miss all the new friends I have made. Try this book and you will be hooked on Grainger!

In What Once Was True, Jean Grainger gives readers a beautifully poignant, insightful, and suspenseful story about the resilience of the human spirit. Two Irish families, who differ in social status, ideological beliefs and generational perceptions, struggle to come to terms with the regrets and prejudices of past life experiences to move forward with their children to futures in a changing world. Ms. Grainger expertly blends her academic understanding of Ireland's history with her keen insight into the motivations and emotions of her characters. It is a brilliant story of the triumph of love, family and compassion over the hardships and misunderstandings of political and generational events. Characters have been so well-developed that her stories have actually given me a sense of having answers to those "questions I wish I had asked" of my treasured family members who are now gone. She’s brought all of these elements together with history, creating another beautiful story of life’s challenges.There’s a few twists and turns that are unexpected but fit perfectly. And yet, it leaves you waiting for the next episode to be written.Ms. Grainger writes stories of her homeland, Ireland. She is truly a story teller. I read a lot of books but am always eagerly awaiting to see her next one. Her books are filled with romance but also with mystery and excitement. And surprise!

Love, loss, faith, and family; no one does it better. I met another family so much like my own with some shared history and experiences. The historical references brought home another time to help me understand my own family as well as those in another country. Jean Grainger touches the heart and soul with her characters. Be prepared to read into the early morning hours! You just loose yourself in Ireland and England only to find it hard to come back. Loved it!

We got G is for Google a while ago and I bought Q is for Quark for my son's 11th birthday. He's not a big reader, but he likes to read this series. The entries are quite complex, they really explain sophisticated science, and the entries, although usually only a page long, are also quite dense - this is not a dumbed down version.It's genuinely interesting and we read it in bite size (or letter size) portions, and learn something new. This is a book you definitely read more than once, and each time, you remember a little more. I really enjoy it and would recommend it for anyone over 10 (parents learn a lot from this book too!)

Excellent homeschool resource - Science shouldn't be dry and boring - and it won't be with this book :-) Interesting introductions to a variety of science topics. Also highly recommend G is for Google: A Math Alphabet Book.

Informative in a fun and clever way. A book kids can grow with starting as a picture book and on to science knowledge as the child grows.

This is a commendable effort to introduce children to general science (not just physics, as the title might imply), but there are minor flaws.In SI units, the degree sign should not be used with celsius. In Light, a prism is described as a 3-sided piece of glass (5 sides or more). If you go up 8 white keys from C you come to D, not C. An object is said to be red because it reflects only red light (pigment makers wish that were true, but it isn't). The air column in a woodwind vibrates only under closed holes. (What happens in cross fingering? Don't the vibrations extend into the room?) And I wish text weren't printed over dark illustrations!

E. Nesbit has written many children's books. The one I'm most familiar with is The Railway Children. I really like that book and it influenced my decision to purchase this book. In the introduction of Shakespeare's Stories for Young Children, E. Nesbit explains her reasons for writing this book. She explains that her children love Shakespeare's story lines but at the time were too young to enjoy the actual play. So she took some of Shakespeare's most famous plays and summarized them, making it easier for children to understand. Shakespeare's influence is found everywhere and I wanted my children to be familiar with his plays. However Shakespeare didn't write for children and I know mine wouldn't understand the language and would be bored in a matter of pages. E. Nesbit did a great job explaining the stories. My children were able to comprehend the stories with little explanation. Each chapter is a different play and about six pages. She also includes direct quotes from the plays. It's the perfect introduction to Shakespeare for young children.

As readers can tell from the title of this review, I cannot recommend it enough.I bought this book for my eight year old who is very interested in Shakespeare but still years away from fully grasping his language. She loves the book and I love reading it aloud to her.SSfYR is presented in chapter book form without illustrations. Nesbit writes beautifully, always respecting the intelligence of her young audience, as well as the traditions behind subject matter she is conveying. Each tale gets its due, while yet being pared down to a digestible size for pre-adolescents. Her language is rich and lively, and her insights are inserted as charming asides that offer an adult's perspective without vering into didactic or moralistic homilies.If your pre-teen is bright, sensitive and looking for a good read, this is the book to buy!

My students loved the stories and found them somewhat easy to understand. I teach HS ESL so they have a little more difficulty understanding such complex stories but they did a pretty good job with these stories.

At first I was not sure whether my 11-year old son would love the way the stories were presented. To my surprize, he kept asking for more and more once we finished the first one, and he had smiles throughout the reading that I did for him. Now he will be reading them himself as well. Great book!

This book is not really written for young readers. My daughter loved the illustrated Usborne version of Shakespeare’s plays, and asked for more Shakespeare. I bought her this book, but it just isn’t written for kids. It didn’t hold her interest, even though she tried.

Very good prep for my family to see a performance of Taming of the Shrew. It was very effective in enabling them to immediately identify the characters and helped to keep their interest as the story unfolded onstage.

Great for familiarizing your children with Shakespeare. It is easy reading. Can be used for children who refuse to read books without pictures. There are no pictures, but the large print is inviting and non-threatening.

The writing is needlessly complex. Even smart children give up on this. Teens and adults could enjoy as story versions of the plays.
