4.5 starsI need to start out by saying that I read ALL of Suzanne Enoch's books during my historical romance years, approximately 10 years ago. And while reading her historicals I fell in love with her contemporary series featuring Samantha Jellicoe and Richard Addison.When I found out that there was a new book coming out, I had to reread the entire series, there was just no getting around it. It's been too long and I wanted to know if I still loved them as much as I did the first time around.And the answer is YES!!!!!I love them!!!I love how the couple met, and I love the way they are together.This series has everything I love about a great contemporary series. A strong and sassy heroine. A rich alpha male who has trouble keeping his fingers and thoughts to himself. And even though they both struggle with their attraction, not only because they come from such different backgrounds but also because the timing couldn't be more inconvenient, they make it work. I applaud the author for not making it easy on Sam and Richard. Their struggle felt genuine and necessary. It's not easy to go legit, and the past is the past, it can't just be swept under the rug willy-nilly.Besides the wonderful plot, I'm laughing as much as I did the first time. The dialogues are as snappy as I remember, and the sexual attraction is just right. Wit and charm are plentiful and make this novel an easy and enjoyable read.Throughout the entire book the tension was high, and there were enough twists and turns that kept me guessing and flipping pages, again after so many years. The author is seasoned, and knows how to write an excellent romantic suspense novel. Her characters were wonderfully fleshed out, with backstories that engaged and supporting characters that enriched the storyline.I'm incredibly excited to read this series again, it features a couple that is easily one of the author's best.

I came late to this party -- though I bought this book years ago, somehow I missed reading it. I'm so glad I finally got to it! What a delight this was: snappy dialogue, attractive and believable characters, supporting characters that felt "real" and a story that kept my interest. Doesn't get much better than that!One of Suzanne Enoch's strong suits in all her books is her ability to write dialogue that really helps to connect the characters and to build the story. Also, she is all about show don't tell: a lost art in romance writing.I loved this story about a strong, superficially hard-boiled heroine and the superficially tough but thoroughly romantic Hero. And I loved that this relationship wasn't easy for either H/h and that it is going to have to undergo a lot of tests and changes over time.I love that Enoch's contemporary romances live up to the high bar she set with her historicals!

This is really a review of the whole series and although individual books within the series might not rate 5 stars overall this is such a wonderful storyline that it is in totality worthy of high praise. And the very first in the series is definitely 5 stars.This is one of those stories where the couple both as individusls and together are swoonworthy. Samantha is an absolute kick a** heroine and I love the role reversal with Rick being the strait laced guy and Samantha being the bad girl with a heart. The build of tension between them, the banter and the push and pull where he tries to control her and she rebels make for sighworthy reading. There are times where I would start to get annoyed with Rick because he was trying to turn Samantha into something she was not but then he would realise his error and redeem himself, sometimes grudgingly because he really likes to get his way but always showing how much he loves and, perhaps more importantly, respects Samantha. I love too that he is very early on besotted with Samantha and knows she's the one and it's Samantha who needs convincing. Again this is a bit of a role reversal in the romance genre.Aside from the relationship, the mystery is good fun, the pace keeps it interesting and the side characters are amusing.This is also not a cliff hanger, there is a great HEA at the end of Book 1 but enough of a question through the remaining books as to whether Samantha and Rick can maintain a relationship given their different outlooks on life that Ms Enoch manages to maintain the sexual tension between them over 5 books and not just by using sex scenes.I'm so glad that after a hiatus of some years that Ms Enoch has brought this couple back to us in 2018.

Leah Brooks is the founder of Young Urban Modern Chefs (Y.U.M. Chefs), a San Francisco cooking school for kids. Y.U.M. As a result, we often do not see the difference between people and things that create value and those that extract value. What do financial people do when they move assets from one place to another? Are they creating value or just extracting value? In classical economics, ‘value’ is the result of productive activities. In earlier versions of economic thought, we have Adam Smith’s theory of value based on the productivity of labour. In modern times, there are sectors that do not produce anything except moving existing assets around instead of creating new assets. It is now assumed that anything that has a price has value. How do we verify the claims by large financial institutions that their employees are the most productive in the world? How do we value their productivity when no new assets had been created by them? The conflation between productivity and value is the illusion Mazzucato seeks to dispel in this book. Mazzucato is in no doubt that the financial sector extracts value, and she discusses how it does this. In the chapter, ‘The Rise of Casino Capitalism’, she explains how extraction is done by the insertion of a wedge, namely, a ‘transaction cost’ between the providers and the receivers of finance. They also achieved through monopoly power, and lastly, through high charges relative to risks run, especially in fund management. In the case of economic downturns, what should be done? Should the government intervene, and if so, in small parts or in major moves? Or should the government keep out and leave it entirely to market forces? The author seems to support the Keynesian method of controlled intervention. Some economists argue otherwise, but Mazzucato’s arguments in the chapter, ‘Undervaluing the Public Sector’ is persuasive. Mazzucato examines the current history of economic activities and the impact of technology. In understanding the idea of value, we can better understand the distribution of income among different sectors of society. It is a fascinating book that is a joy to read because it covers economics, including its technical and historical aspects, lucidly for the layman. It takes us through the history of economics and the way ‘value’ had been defined and used, to the rise of the financial colossuses, and how they changed the idea of value and the impact that has made. She discusses the difference between creating value and extracting value, and the role of the government in stabilising the economy when takers (those who extract value) disrupt the economy create false value against the real value of the makers (people who produce value). Mazzucato invites us to determine what sort of economy do we want? In so doing, she explains what markets are and how they can shape the economy – so that we can shape the markets. Mazzucato is one of the most interesting economists working today. I say this because her project in the last two books focus on a ground-up redetermination of what is important in the economy. To someone like me, who is interested in the social generation and distribution of resources but who think that policy makers went the wrong way in recent years (especially before 2008, see Bernanke to Friedman: “Let me end my talk by abusing slightly my status as an official representative of the Federal Reserve. I would like to say to Milton and Anna: Regarding the Great Depression. You're right, we did it. We're very sorry. But thanks to you, we won't do it again. “) this book is just catnip. So much catnip that I stayed up too late a couple of nights in a row reading it.Mazzucato, in this book, looks at where value was theoretically derived historically from the physiocrats to Smith through Marx and into the marginal revolution. She focuses the critique on the marginalists and the composition of current GDP about how it focus to much on the market – how what has a price has value and nothing else. For Mazzucato, this sidelines non-market institutions like the government which are long-term value creators but left out of market considerations because what they do doesn’t have a price. It is a compelling argument to look at how we analyze “the economy” in a different light.

I bought this book because I read the entrepreneurial state. This book in my opinion in a very easy to understand way for non-economists argues that we have to return to a much more basic question - the question of value creation, what is it and what is it not?The book starts with a theory historical perspective that are incredible easy to understand on how value have been conceptualized. This theory perspective gives a clear guideline to the different perspectives and the development towards a subjective understanding of value and what problems that rises. In particular the consistent discussion of rent seeking or value extraction is important - even though it might for some readers at first glance will be seen as a finance and neoliberal ideology bashing, it works by closer consideration as a tool to positive start a discussion of what value creation really means.By going this way the author succeed in forcing us to reconsider our everyday concepts of the state, and in particular its role in creating long term value and prosperity. Inevitable it comes to question and ask questions of how to define and understand the value of the common good, growth, innovation and entrepreneurship.From a more organizational and sociological perspective she forces us to consider how we run private business, how we extract value from the business both in terms of distribution (top versus other stakeholders). It forces anyone working in business to think if we are just rent-seekers or we actually create some value for all stakeholders.I find this book very helpful to think about politics, economy, sociology and organizational science.

I was quite disappointed with this little book. There are only 69 establishments of any sort listed for the whole of Buenos Aires. Twelve of the neighborhoods have only three entrees or fewer. Recoleta, where I have been staying the last couple of trips, and which is a tourist magnet for the elaborate cemetary where Eva Peron (Evita) is buried, has only four suggestions, not including some fabulous, but inexpensive, white tablecloth restaurants I have dined at.There is one 4" X 6" map which displays miniscule numbers representing all of the authors 69 establishments in this enormous city, but no metro station locations. I didn't learn very much from this little book (which also doesn't mention ANY prices for any of the "Bars,Cafes and Restaurants".) I would not recommend this book for $5.98, let alone the suggested list price of $14.95!

This book is not a be-all-end-all guide to the old restaurants in Buenos Aires. Take some of what they recommend with a grain of salt. I paired it with 1-2 more comprehensive guides and some internet research, so it worked well for me, but if you are looking for just one book on BA restaurants, this might not be the resource for you. The positives, however, are that it's an extremely attractive book (it was designed by a fantastic designer) and that a photo accompanies each restaurant. I consider it a great keepsake, as opposed to my other guides, which I sold after the trip.

The author is a graphic designer. This helps explain why the book has a nice feel and format and good photos. But the text is essentially useless. Yet the text is what you want in a restaurant guide -- just ask Zagat, which has done very well with no graphics or photos at all. Furthermore, the book now is five years old and several of the featured restaurants are gone or have suffered steep declines. Many others are tourist trade stalwarts, but you wouldn't know it from all the praise dispensed by this book. You'll do better to pick up a solid basic guide to the city, and rely on trip advisor or one of the several excellent English language blogs about dining in B.A. to help you choose bars, cafes and restaurants.

I think this is a good guide if you really want to hit all the very local restaurants in Buenos Aires. The descriptions of the cafes are not in depth, but the list clearly represents all of the places that notable in Buenos Aires. Which is to say, if you're looking for a review of ALL restaurants in the city, this is not the book for you. I guess I didn't take the title into account when I bought it. You will not find listings for Indian, Italian (except pizza, maybe), Chinese, Japanese, etc in this book - strictly Argentine cuisine for the most part. So if that's what you want - great, but I'd suggest going with a more broad city guide book for a general review of all restaurants.

If I lived in Buenos Aires I probably wouldn't be too happy about this book. It reveals all those hidden gems that locals would like to keep to themselves. But as a tourist I found this the most useful little culinary guide book I've ever bought. Of course, BA has all those new hip (fusion and otherwise) restaurants you'd expect to find in a city that's playing in the New York / London / Copenhagen / Sydney / etc. - league. But the problem with those restaurants is that you wouldn't know if you're in BA, NYC, London, etc., without looking at their business cards. The restaurants and cafes listed in this little book BREATHE BA, they could only be there. We tried MANY of these places and they offered very good to outstanding food and, equally important, wonderful atmosphere. I emailed a friend who grew up in BA and listed some of the restaurants. She was almost taken aback that within a week we had uncovered almost all of her favorite "hidden" gems. As I said, locals may disapprove.

Loved the book but nowhete did it indicate that it was a pocket sized book! I was hoping for an A4 sized book!!

This is one of the best reads i’ve had all year, for it paints an in depth picture of the pathology that afflicts our current Preidient, as described by a panel of psychiatrists and psychologists meeting at a Yale symposium. Indeed, I made a list of the personality disorders described for him and keep in on my phone; it’s a wonderful reference guide to explain the truly screwed up behavior Trump shows daily. Much of it is expected “e.g malignant narcissism” but also much to me is new (e.g “a present hedonist” who cares not what came before, or what will come after, but only about what’s happening now and how it affects him.)The rap on the book comes from academic physicians who cite the Goldwater rule, which says you shouldn’t diagnose a person’s pathology unless you’ve examined them directly. I’m an academic and can assure you otherwise. The contributors in the book take that argument on directly, and carefully qualify their diagnoses based upon the behavior they see from afar. They also argue that Trump is the most powerful person in the world with his finger on the nuclear button...understanding his pathology “trumps” all other concerns.History will reference this book when it analyzes Trump’s personality, pathology, and performance. I recommend it enthusiastically.

Most discerning Americans know Trump is a narcissist who mixes lies with delusion, slanders freely, and moment to moment must have the spotlight turned on him, even if it means, for example, undercutting his Secretary of State Tillerson and potentially dragging the world into a war in service to his ever-faltering self-esteem.Lee's book appears to have been written by among the best that psychiatry/psychology have to offer. The authors are deeply moral professionals who see through the glass clearly, something we don't get often enough from mental health professionals.What is most awesome about *The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump* is that most of what is written here rings true. The authors introduce concepts I was not familiar with such as those relating to Trump’s relationship with time. Unlike most of us who consider the future impact of our actions, Trump responds in the moment, to assuage his ego needs vs. thinking ahead about the harm his comments might cause. We are witness to his in-the-moment orientation in his attachment to Twitter. Some journalists and pundits have convinced themselves, and tried to convince us, that Trump’s Tweets and other interference's are strategic, meant to give him “wins”. The authors here confirm that this simply is not so. The delusion that Trump has some secret wisdom leaves us in danger of following Trump down the rabbit hole to our own destruction.Trump’s presidency is a threat to our democratic republic, our freedoms, our values, and for the spiritually-inclined, our very souls. I am grateful to these courageous authors for doing what they can to save America and the world from Trump’s toxicity. History will look kindly on them; they chose well. It is up to each of us to do what little we can to protect what we have here in an era of vulnerability as a deranged leader tears at the fabric of our nation in service of his emotional needs. It can only get worse.

You already know a lot about this book just from the title. What got my attention right away was that it's not written by one person like the vast majority of the books about Donald Trump. Instead, it is a collection of essays by 27 different psychology professionals, whether working psychologists or psychiatrists. These people are all highly trained and are so concerned about the mental health of the President of the United States that they are violating the spirit of the ethical guidance from their professional organizations--namely, not to analyze the mental health of someone you have never examined.What motivated the choice to make these insights public? This controversial decision is explained at the outset by Drs. Herman and Lee: "the public trust is also violated if the profession fails in its duty to alert the public when a person who holds the power of life and death over us all shows signs of clear, dangerous mental impairment." Given the power at his command, they feel that the mental health of the president should get at least as much scrutiny as that of other citizens. They have concluded that Donald Trump has a serious personality disorder and is a danger to the country. For that reason, they feel that they must honor their "duty to warn" the public of the danger he poses, (just as they have a professional "duty to warn" if a patient is a danger to himself or others.)Since the president appears unwilling to undergo a genuine physical examination--much less a mental health one--these professionals can give the public insights based on the unusually plentiful record of Donald Trump's public actions, comments and even tweets. As both candidate and president (and even during the decades before), Trump was someone who sought the limelight and whom the media found fascinating and worth extensive coverage. He was also very accessible, very quotable and much quoted. Although these psychologists have never examined him, they have a lot of real-time observations to work with, as well as so many available written interviews, articles and books, many in Trump's own words.They also feel that, as professionals, they can address some of the questions the public has about the behavior and comments of the president, including,"Is this unusual but normal? Or is it something that should make me worried, even afraid?"You know the answers these authors all reach from the title. But they each take a different focus in their individual chapters. Here's a sample: "Unbridled and Extreme Present Hedonism", "Pathological Narcissism and Politics: A Lethal Mix"; "Sociopathy"; "Donald Trump: Is (a) Bad, (B) Mad, (C) All of the Above)"; "Why 'Crazy Like a Fox' versus 'Crazy Like a Crazy' Really Matters' 'Cognitive Impairment, Dementia and POTUS"; and so on.Some psychologists write about the effect of a president like this on the American public. "How a President Freezes Healing and Promotes Crisis", "In Relationship with an Abusive President', and "Who Goes Trump?Tyranny as a Triumph of Narcissism".There is also a chapter about the 25th amendment. And a conclusion by Noam Chomsky. One non-psychologist who provides an interesting chapter is Tony Schwartz, who wrote The Art of the Deal with Trump. In 2016 Schwartz donated his help to the Clinton campaign for free as "penance" for writing the book that brought Trump to the public attention and helped mythologize him. It's something Schwartz has regretted ever since, even donating the 2015-2016 proceeds from it to charity. Schwartz's chapter is titled, "I Wrote The Art of the Deal with Donald Trump: His Self-Sabotage Is Rooted in His Past" and considers his strict father and early life somehow gave him the idea that everything in life is either a success or a failure--and he can't accept failure.)The writers have different styles, but generally include a wealth of real-life examples and write in a way that avoids jargon. On the face of it, it would seem that Trump's supporters wouldn't want to have anything to do with this book. However, it's not a left-wing hatchet job; it's professional psychologists analyzing the President of the United States in his actions and comments. If anything, it seems more important for his supporters to read and think about all this than it would be for his critics (even if Trump supporters wind up rejecting its conclusions, they'll be well-informed on why so many people feel that way). A valuable and unique contribution to the literature about the Trump presidency.

JIM MILES is a seasoned battlefield explorer, author, historian, and teacher. He has written more than one hundred articles and several books on Southern history, archaeology, and the Civil War. If you only want to read one book in preparation for a tour of the Atlanta Campaign in the Civil War, whether guided or self-guided, this would be the one. My research into the Atlanta Campaign involved several detailed books on various aspects and specific battles of the campaign. The last book in my research in preparation for a recent Civil War Tours (cwt) trip to the Atlanta area was Miles' book. I read the historical entries in the book, then skimmed the touring materials to get a general feel for the geography of the campaign. During each day's journey, I kept my attention on the CWT tour guide and the provided CWT tour battlefield maps to ensure I could properly locate each bus stop and the significance.(notes in the margins). At the end of each day I spent 1-2 hours comparing my notes with the appropriate material in Fields of Glory to confirm what I had seen and heard that day, and reconciling my memories of the sites with the verbal descriptions in Miles' book. My notes during the days ended up adding very little to the material already available in this book. What this means to me is that once I've located where we are on the battlefield map, no further notes are necessary - just let the guide tell the story and visualize the battle. If I need to remind myself later what happened and where, I will refer to Miles' book. If I ever get back to Atlanta and want to do this campaign again, it will be self-guided using this book. I will definitely check out other Guide Books in this series for future Civil War Seminars and Tours.

It can be fun traveling in the footsteps of history. In fact there has been a recent upswing in "Heritage Tourism," and with the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War quickly approaching I can only imagine the number of heritage tourists is only going to grow. Though guided tours are great, they are often prohibitively expensive for the average tourist. Besides, I would rather invest a small amount of money and buy a great guide book, follow the footprints of history at my own leisurely pace."The Civil War Explorer" is a terrific series of guidebooks written by Jim Miles published by Cumberland House Publishing of Nashville. Among the series' titles is "Fields of Glory: A History and Tour Guide of the War in the West, The Atlanta Campaign, 1864," which is currently in its second edition."Fields of Glory" traces the route of Sherman's campaign and capture of Atlanta. Mr. Miles has broken the tour up into several easily manageable sections: Ringgold to Dalton, Tilton & Resaca, from Adairsville to Cassville, Cartersville to Pickett's Mill, Kennesaw Mountain, from Roswell to Peach Tree Creek, and finally a tour of Atlanta and Jonesboro.Introducing each section of the tour is a historical overview which puts the sites to which he will eventually guide his readers into their proper historical context. Once you climb in the car with Mr. Miles book as a guide (I highly recommend taking another person along with you to act as a navigator) there detailed turn by turn instructions to take you to the tour stops. Along the way, Mr. Miles has supplemented his text with several thumbnail, biographical sketches covering many of the most prominent players in the drama unfolding before you. Not only does Mr. Miles take his readers to all of the must see places, but also he takes them off the beaten path to see things that many casual tourists may miss.Any one who buys Mr. Miles book is getting two tours for the price of one, as also covered in the book are many sites related to "The Great Locomotive Chase" detailed by Russell Bonds in his book "Stealing the General: The Great Locomotive Chase and the First Medal of Honor."Mr. Miles' book serves as a great companion book to two other recent books about the Campaign and battles for Atlanta, "The Bonfire: The Siege and Burning of Atlanta" by Marc Wortman and "War Like the Thunderbolt: The Battle and Burning of Atlanta," another book by Russell Bonds."Fields of Glory" is a must have for every heritage tourist who finds him or herself in Northwestern Georgia. You can easily cover a section or two of the tour in a day, but if you would like to take the whole tour, and see everything, I would highly suggest scheduling a week of vacation, as you will most surely need it.

Finding Civil War related sites in North Georgia is no mean feat, but Miles' book really helps. I was able to see the majority of the most important sites in the Atlanta Campaign on a two day whirlwind car tour by following the route laid out by Fields of Glory. (Although a faithful and through tour following the book would have taken several days at least.) The interpretive background provided about each stop is extremely valuable, and I'm sure many of the sites I visited are not the sort of thing the casual Civil War tourist would ever find unaided. Also, the chapters describing the campaign history are very well written and provide just the right amount of detail. I did find that the (modern) maps in the book were somewhat less than adequate and, in many cases, there are no maps provided for some hard-to-find locations. I spent several hours before my trip printing off online street maps of each of the destinations. Without this prepration I probably would have gotten lost and would have seen a lot less. But, on balance, the book was exactly what I was looking for. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to tour the sites related to the Atlanta Campaign.
