I will say that I enjoyed the book. Is it scary? In my opinion, it is not. But I found it well-written, and had a nice, detailed answer as to how and why the house was haunted. I grew up watching the movie, "The Legend of Hell House," which was based on this book and the screenplay was written by the author. I feel the movie had some good parts and was enjoyable, but it skipped over a lot of the explanations. I read this book after a recent re-viewing of the film. I see now that the film stuck closely to the book, yet I enjoyed the book a little more because it explained things a bit more in detail. Yes, the book is slow in parts and modern readers may not find it scary, but I looked at it as an interesting debate on the nature of parapsychology and a clever little mystery to solve (about which of our researchers had the right answer). Keep in mind that this book was written in the 70's and can seem a little dated. I'm sure the sexuality presented here was also more of a big deal than it is now. I think it's a classic tale. It may not be the best haunted house story but it's a good one. And I think if you view the movie first, this only enhances your enjoyment of the story.

Wow. Once Matheson gets his hooks in, there’s no escape. “Hell House,” while not a transformative experience, was certainly a gripping one. The characters in the book refer to the titular house as ‘the Everest of haunted houses.’ That sentiment is equally true for this novel as it pertains to haunted house stories. I don’t normally go in for straight-up horror, but this was absolutely worth the price of admission: it is a fantastic book.Unrelenting pace. Sympathetic characters with disparate backgrounds and conflicting motivations. A different approach to the science vs. supernatural debate. An interesting (novel, haha) sectional structure, where the ‘chapters’ are marked by time of day rather than conventional numbering or titles.Full disclosure: this book does contain sex scenes and overt references to sex and sexual activity. That should come as no surprise to readers of the genre, in general. Also worth mentioning in this regard: the book was written ~1970. The sexual revolution was, if not still in full swing (haha), still radically reshaping notions of sex and sexuality. While “Hell House” does contain shocking (at times, explicit) scenes, I’m not entirely convinced those scenes exist explicitly for shock value. Instead, they seem mostly in line with tropes that are now considered genre-standard.Recommended for: fans of horror (especially haunted house stories, I would suspect); those drawn to tales of the supernatural; those who relish incredibly well paced stories; readers who want to be quickly immersed in a setting and remain engrossed as long as possible; anyone looking for a scare or some classic creepiness. If you enjoyed Matheson’s other contributions to horror, or books like “Our Lady of Darkness,” which have their basis in late 19th/early 20th century influences, spend some time with “Hell House.”Edit: typos. Thar be plenty, yar.“A flickering in her eyes revealed the change, like the evanescent shimmer of sunlight across a cloud-darkened landscape. Instantly she was herself again; but not emerging from amnesia. It was, instead, a sudden, brutal surfacing to self, with total memory of every vileness she’d been forced to utter.”“Fischer nodded. “Belasco formed a club he called Les Aphrodites. Every night-later, two and three times a day-they’d hold a meeting; what Belasco called his Sinposium. Having all partaken of drugs and aphrodisiacs, they’d sit around that table in the great hall talking about sex until everyone was what Belasco referred to as ‘lubricous.’ Then an orgy would commence.”“Psi phenomena abound in realms of credulity.”“It was silent for a while. Then Edith’s legs retracted as Florence began to sing in a soft, melodious voice: “ ‘The world hath felt a quickening breath from heaven’s eternal shore. And souls, triumphant over death, return to earth once more.’ “ Something about the sound of her muted singing in the darkness made Edith’s flesh crawl.”“Fischer tottered on his knees, across his face the dazed expression of a man who’d just been bayoneted in the stomach. He tried to hold himself erect but couldn’t. With a choking noise, he fell, landing on his side and drawing up his legs, bending forward at the neck until he had contracted to a fetal pose, eyes closed, body shivering uncontrollably. He felt the rug against his cheek. Nearby, he heard the pop and crackle of the fire. And it seemed as though someone were standing over him, someone who regarded him with cold, sadistic pleasure, gloating at the sight of his ravaged form, the helpless dissolution of his will.”

The ectoplasmic sh!t hits the fan in Richard Matheson’s brooding tale of paranormal phenomena and sexual repression. Set in the 1970s, Hell House begins as a wealthy octogenarian (with apparently too much money and too little time left) hires expert parapsychologist Dr. Lionel Barrett to answer the metaphysical question of life after death, promising Barrett and his fellow investigators each $100,000 to bring him the answer. As if proving survival post-death wasn’t tricky enough, the hapless team is dispatched to the long abandoned Belasco House somewhere in rural Maine, a decadent manor that fell into disrepute after a dark period of drug addiction, alcoholism, debauchery, with just a dash of cannibalism—all of which occurred there under the silent influence of Emeric Belasco. Armed with troves of scientific equipment and an orange cat, the good doctor, his insecure wife Edith, and two spiritual mediums named Florence and Fischer arrive to discover this creepy estate possesses all the amenities ranging from an icky tarn to a death-defying steam room. Things go horribly awry, the spooks come out, and this ragtag group soon finds their sanity being subtly undermined by the malevolent forces housed within. It’s pretty clear why this deserted manor was been dubbed "Hell House" by the good townsfolk. As Barrett and the others resolve to rid Belasco House of its evil affliction, they soon learn that the ghosts here won’t go down—at least not without one hell of a fight.I had high hopes for Hell House, which had glowing endorsements from such auspicious writers as Stephen King. Alas, save for a couple of gripping moments, the book was so-so at best. Matheson’s writing here is pedestrian, repetitive, and wrought with awkward adverbs. The narrative plods at a leaden pace. The fright elements are familiar by today’s standards (I realize the book was published in the 1970s, but so was ‘Salem Lot and The Shining—both of which continue to stand the test of time). Although the ending was unpredictable and rather fitting, it still felt anticlimactic and maybe even a little contrived. The characters are banal, their motives one-dimensional, and the reader is given little as to their lives outside of Hell House. Dr. Barrett is overly arrogant and his attempts at explaining the nature of ghostly phenomena through the lens of cold, scientific logic bridges on nonsensical techno-babble; Edith is meek and repressed; and Florence is stubborn and overeager to prove she’s correct about the source of the haunting, even at the expense of her own life. Of the quartet, Benjamin Franklin Fischer was perhaps the only likeable character. In addition to the characters' lack of depth, I found myself occasionally frustrated by both their strange behaviors and their rash decisions, some of which proved fatal. As I was reading Hell House, I had a hard time not drawing comparisons between this tale and Shirley Jackson’s seminal novel, The Haunting of Hill House (1959). While the plots of both stories surround four ghost seekers probing a notoriously unfriendly pile with only a single vowel to distinguish the two—Hill House v. Hell House—the more notable similarities are found in the principal protagonists. There’s little doubt that Matheson took some of the key traits and identities of Jackson’s players and injected them into his own. On the other hand, Matheson’s horrors are openly exposed while Jackson’s are implied and more frightening for that very reason. Moreover, Matheson's prose doesn’t even come close to reaching the poetry of Jackson's elegantly woven web of words. (Simply read the first paragraph of Hill House and you’ll see what I mean.)The story is so steeped in darkly twisted, depraved eroticism that some might argue there’s more sexual content going on here than horror. It’s true, there’s plenty of flesh on display and sexuality certainly plays a chief role in the backstories of both the characters and the Belasco House. I won’t mince words—there were times when I sensed the book was lewdly indulging in sex, much like a titillated teenager (unlike William Peter Blatley’s The Exorcist, which handles similar adult themes but with greater sophistication). But if you ask me, lurid sex actually sets the book apart from other forays into the haunted house genre. While I had no objection to Matheson’s depiction of spirit possession coupled with sexual kinks (hash-tag ghost sex), which have their place in books like these; however, readers may find the sexualization and brutal abuse of the female characters gratuitous at times.Despite being given high marks, I’m afraid Hell House doesn’t live up to its advance billing. Sure, there’s some memorable stuff found in the pages of this cinematic novel (which was later adapted into a 1973 film for which Matheson wrote the screenplay), and it’s a both beguiling feat for its time as well as a respectable contribution to the development of the modern horror genre. But is Belasco House the “Mount Everest of haunted houses”? Meh, let’s just go with K2 and call it a day, shall we? Unfortunately, the book suffers from poor characterization and stilted writing, but I’d still recommend this novel to all you Matheson appreciators or lovers of the haunted house plot…though I can’t promise you’ll like it.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best Books of the Month, March 2007: Pulitzer-Prize winner Douglas Hofstadter takes on some weighty and wonderful questions in I Am a Strange Loop--among them, the "size" of a soul and the vagaries of thought--and proposes persuasive answers that surprised me both with their simplicity and their sense of optimism: a rare combination to be found in a book that tackles the mysteries of the brain. This long-awaited book is a must-have for avid science readers and navel-gazers. --Anne Bartholomew

"[F]ascinating... original and thought-provoking.... [T]here are many pleasures in I Am a Strange Loop."―Wall Street Journal"I Am a Strange Loop is thoughtful, amusing and infectiously enthusiastic."―Bloomberg news"I Am a Strange Loop scales some lofty conceptual heights, but it remains very personal, and it's deeply colored by the facts of Hofstadter's later life. In 1993 Hofstadter's wife Carol died suddenly of a brain tumor at only 42, leaving him with two young children to care for.... I Am a Strange Loop is a work of rigorous thinking, but it's also an extraordinary tribute to the memory of romantic love: The Year of Magical Thinking for mathematicians."―Time"I Am a Strange Loop is vintage Hofstadter: earnest, deep, overflowing with ideas, building its argument into the experience of reading it-for if our souls can incorporate those of others, then I Am a Strange Loop can transmit Hofstadter's into ours. And indeed, it is impossible to come away from this book without having introduced elements of his point of view into our own. It may not make us kinder or more compassionate, but we will never look at the world, inside or out, in the same way again."―Los AngelesTimes Book Review"Nearly thirty years after his best-selling book Gödel, Escher, Bach, cognitive scientist and polymath Douglas Hofstadter has returned to his extraordinary theory of self."―New Scientist"His new book, as brilliant and provocative as earlier ones, is a colorful mix of speculations with passages of autobiography."―Martin Gardiner

#36,048 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Douglas Hofstadter, justifiably famous for "Godel, Escher, Bach" wrote about the much trickier subject of mind and personal identity in this 2004 book. It is one thing to analyze the relation between three applications (their results in Math, visual art, and music) of self-referencing thought, and quite another to analyze the entity doing the thinking. Hofstadter begins with Godel because as it will turn out, his insight into the recursive descriptiveness of number theory from which self-reference was (supposedly) banned by Bertran Russel, becomes his inroad into a philosophy of mind. Hofstadter is a master at describing (without mathematical formalism) what Godel did and why it matters. He is not so good at applying this to mind.Besides Godel, the author's other insight comes from the loopy-like nature of recursive entities like infinite halls of mirrors or what happens when you point a television camera at the screen displaying what that camera is viewing. We all have seen these, and from these two things, Hofstadter assembles a theory of mind based on the idea that whatever goes on in the brain at the low and mid physical levels results in some sort of abstractions (perhaps manifested in harmonic oscillations of electromagnetic energy) that from another perspective, are the very stuff of consciousness. There is nothing particularly new about this. Rejecting religion or other basis for any sort of dualism (and his remarks are rather disparaging in this respect) and declaring oneself a physicalist (there is nothing more than physics) is par for the course and occasionally swatting straw-man arguments to the contrary, is all part of the contemporary game for most of today's philosophers and scientists. Besides religion he mentions David Chalmers who was, apparently, a student of Hofstadter's in his doctoral days and rejects Chalmer's non-religious panpsychism (and along with this presumably Davidson's "dual aspect" monism as well) which is fine as far as it goes.Hofstadter's theory is somatic. Mind arises from what goes on physically in the brain and nothing more. The problem is he never gets to connect up the subjective with anything that can, even in theory, be measured by third parties. This is not to criticize him alone here, no other physicalists (or for that matter panpsychists) manage to do it either, but in this case the author jumps from the neurological layer to the concept of self-referencing abstraction (presupposing consciousness) without pointing to anything in between that might connect the two. After declaring his theory "explained", Hofstadter moves on to considerations of how one strange loop-abstraction, the one that fools me into the illusion of a stable "I", is influenced and modified by others. He is much impressed by Derek Parfit's thought experiments [supposedly] demonstrating that what we take to be the un-copyable core of ourselves, is nothing but effervescent illusion and can in fact be copied. Moreover, though we cannot copy it today (and may never be able to do that in reality) we can, from our own interiority, find ourselves being partial expressions of other people, their strange loops! He supposes that our own personal-identities form slowly as we proceed from infant to child based on all the various influences that impinge on us from the world as these come to influence new effects in our own minds. The totality of all this over time results in a relatively stable, but not changeless, personal identity. He moves on from there to suppose that those we hold and know particularly closely (our parents, wives, children, siblings, etc) can cause their own identities to be partly duplicated in our own minds. None of this really makes sense. Of course someone with whom we are close for many years will have a proportionally larger influence over the shape of our phenomenal arena. What he doesn't seem to appreciate is that this influence takes the same pathways (our interpretation of sensory experience for example) as the initial early development of our own personality. There isn't any loop in my brain that is a copy (however imperfect) of my wife or children's identity, only modifications of my own that represent them. There is much here and I do not doubt that writing "I am a Strange Loop" was a labor of love in more ways than one. It is, as with other somatic theories, even possible that oscillating fields in the brain have a lot to do with consciousness and personal identity. There are still reasons to believe that this is not the whole story.

An apparently key part of this book is an insert or annex that provides a number of color photographs illustrating the feedback (loop) concept Hofstadter is discussing. These pictures are not included in the Kindle Edition, thus leaving out important context and description. If Amazon is selling an abbreviated/abridged book, that fact should be stated up front, so we know what we are buying. Any book containing graphics, photos, equations, etc., should be checked closely before buying the Kindle edition. Had I known this was an abbreviated edition, I would not have purchased the Kindle edition. The book is too complex to be abbreviated.

Fascinating book, and much shorter than Godel, Escher, Bach, for those of us who want to understand the ideas without reading a 700 page tome.

I had a somewhat difficult time assessing the quality of this work because, while the discussion concerns some very important topics, the book is relatively poorly written. The youthful exuberance and brilliance that made GEB a classic are gone, replaced by a more sober and meditative exposition: Quite often tedious and boring. But I think that what Prof. Hofstadter is discussing and his ideas are very important. Therefore I strongly recommend the book for helping to understand Godel’s work, and the author’s views in the science and philosophy of mind. He often elaborates points that are rather easy to grasp, and with respect to alternative perspectives or viewpoints, he often sets up “straw men” to compare with his ideas and oversimplifies. What we are given here is a very flawed piece of work, and no classic like GEB, but important to read because the author’s ideas are important, and from a more mature perspective than GEB.

Couldn't put it down. Great style. Explains the hardest thing to explain in the world by using intuition pumps, personal stories, mathematics, and analogies. Builds up a repertoire of entities that stay with you the whole book getting enriched every time they're called back to illustrate a point.Hofstadter must really hate mosquitos.

I just finished the first recipe, and just tasted the first cookie, and that recipe -- Buckwheat and Cocoa Nibs Cookies -- is going into my permanent repertoire. If that's the only recipe that makes it for me, then this was a good book. But that won't be the only one. Next I try the Almond Thank You Cake. I have a feeling that recipe will also be a winner. And they aren't just good recipes, they're good *really interesting* recipes. They're creative. They seem like they are done by people who know *a lot more than I do* about food. And yet my first impression is, I will not need to hire Himalayan sherpas to hunt down exotic ingredients for me. The ingredients look pretty reasonable, but the combinations are very interesting. If I lived to be a thousand, I would never have invented Buckwheat and Cocoa Nibs cookies, and after tasting the first one they are already one of favorite things ever. I think this might be a really good book.I'll come back & update....-----------------------------------------------------------*Second* recipe is a big winner.OK, I made the Almond Cake, and it is really incredible. It behaved *exactly* as they said it would, it tastes great, looks great -- just like the picture -- and once again, the only slightly unusual ingredient was almond paste, which was easy to find at my grocery store. (I remember looking at a (very different) cookbook a year ago and thinking "OK, so where do I get, um, sumac? And pomegranate molasses?" If I ask for pomegranate molasses at my grocery store, I think they will call the cops.)I am deliberately choosing the plainer-looking recipes in the book, and there are a good number of them. What I mean is -- I am tired of deserts that are (or should be) called names like "Diabetic Stroke Chocolate Sugar Bombs". I like chocolate as much as the next guy. More, maybe. The picture on the cover of the book is of a chocolate cake. OK. But there is a limit to how much chocolate I need in this life, and I am approaching it. I want some deserts that taste -- more sophisticated, I guess. These first two recipes are delivering that -- while being straightforward to create, and the *recipes work right*.OK! Two home runs in a row. Favorite dessert book ever. Could a dessert book win the Nobel Peace Prize? Let's make it happen.

A couple of months ago, I found and made two recipes from the Food52 website: Ten-Minute Lime Cracker Pie and Dorie Greenspan's 3-ingredient Almond Crackle Cookies (both also included in this book). The pie alone was so wonderful that I would make it every week if my hips could handle it. The recipes' success inspired me to order the cookbook for my British daughter-in-law, an avid baker.I gave it to her while they were visiting over Thanksgiving. She immediately cracked the book open, and we both oohed and ahhed over the stunning photos and drool-worthy recipes. The pages are filled with helpful tips, and Kristin Milgore's recipe intros are interesting and fun to read! My daughter-in-law weighs all her ingredients on a scale, so she also appreciated the metric measurements, as it can be hard to find cookbooks that fluidly move between American and European kitchens.Anyway, while at our house last week, Jo made Meme's Blackberry Batter Cobbler (wildly popular!) with the last of my frozen boysenberries and a decadent, chewy, whipped-creamy, let's-all-have-seconds Chocolate Cloud Cake. During that same time, I also tried out Stella Parks' No-Stress Pie Dough, which was a snap to make and an absolute dream to work with. The result was a flaky and wonderful crust for the Thanksgiving pumpkin pie.Once back in England, Jo wasted no time whipping up a batch of Back-to-School Raspberry Granola Bars, a cookie she proclaimed to be both speedy and delish. (The photo she sent me this morning was accompanied by this caption: "Because obviously, jet lag is a good excuse to try out another bake from Genius Desserts!")This is a gorgeous cookbook filled with recipes both familiar and unusual. With six out of six successful experiments under our belts, including pies, cakes, and cookies, together we give it the five stars it so justly deserves. Clearly I need to get my own copy, because the book I've grown to love is now in its new home across the Pond. And ... because dessert is always a good idea.

I just received this book and i have to say I am really disappointed. I love Food52 so I had high expectations. But in reviewing the recipes there is not much in here that I actually want to make. Also, I find it ironic that Stella Parks’ recipe for ‘No Stress Pie Dough’ takes 2 full pages in the book to explain. I’m stressed just reading it. I consider myself a pretty good home baker, but I would not purchase this book again.

The recipes are amazing..I’ve already tried several and even my picky daughter says they are all “keepers”!The toasted sugar from Stella Parks is a game changer..and the savory shortbread cooked in the cast iron skilled..really is geniu..and delicious.

Have loved cooking through this book this past month - every recipe I've tried has worked, which is what I typically find on Food52.com. The recipes in this book ( Parsley Cake! Cacio e Pepe Shortbread! ) as well as the the introductions to each, are interesting. Doable recipes, usually with a unique twist, and attainable ingredients make this really worthwhile and enjoyable addition to my cookbook collection and baking repertoire.

I got this cookbook and the first weekend made 4 different cookie recipes from it. My family loved them all, and they are all very different and interesting (in a good way). I cook for a living and NEVER buy cookbooks but this one really fit the bill for being useful and offering some new techniques and or flavors. Love it. Lots of good explanations and tips too.

Nothing really surprising or new here, just the same basic stuff with a slight twist to try and make it seem different. It's not.

I don't know if I've just missed it up to now or if it really is a new release, but I was so happy to see this finally available on the Kindle! I have the print version...my daughter has the small print version...and now I can have it on my tablet and phone so it's with me where ever I go.This is a great book for finding verses and passages about certain topics in the Bible.Want to know what the Bible has to say about loneliness? Just click on the word in the table of contents and it takes you to two pages of references, everything from feeling like nobody likes or cares for you to how being alone can help you find a deeper communion with God.Each section also ends with "other topics" that are related and may help you find the answers you're looking for. For example, the section on "alcohol" ends with references to abstinence, beer, drunkenness, liquor, and wine. This is a really helpful book for pastors, councilors, or just a friend trying to help a friend.Besides the Bible itself, this is probably the most important book for anyone to have with them. For yourself or helping you to help others, this can really help you find the passages in the Bible that you know are there but just can't quite remember the Book and Chapter.

The author begins this book explaining how difficult it is to interpret the written word, because meanings change depending upon the inflection & emphasis of different words. The prime example given is how the phrase "I didn't say you stole the money" can be interpreted at least 6 different ways, with significantly different meanings, depending on which word is emphasized. However, he then goes on to simply point to Bible passages on different topics without explanation/interpretation. In other words, he acknowledges that written statements can be difficult to interpret without additional explanation, but then expects the reader to simply read a Bible passage & somehow know which interpretation is correct.

I have searched at least six key words and none of them are in this book. Holy, Holy Spirit, Spirit and gifts related to gifts of the Spirit are not included. I am disappointed that 309 page book in small type does not contain more specific references. The "Little Book of Where To Find It in the Bible is not the same as the larger 596 page book titled "Where To Find It in the Bible" The larger book is complete with additional references that are missing in the Little Book...do not go for the smaller, less expensive version as it is virtually worthless. The 596 page version is much more complete.

The subject line says it all. I'll never know if this is a good digital book because I cannot possibly find specific topics without turning each page. Maybe print versions would be better because you could fan through the pages. I have no studied comment on the content, because I could never find anything I searched for. Disappointing.

I have frequently asked several Bible study friends about verses and got incomplete or misleading answers. This book made finding answers fun. So much so that I looked up questions I hadn't thought of yet. It is concise andI believe as comprehensive as anyone could want.

This is the second one I have bought and I would recommend it to anyone!

I was under the impression that this was a full size book. It's not.It is about the size of an index card at 5 1/2 " tall and 3 1/2" wide.Print is so small I have to use a magnifier. There is no mention in the description that it is so small....smaller than a paperback. The book that I received is titled'Little book of where to.....'There is no"little" in the title of the one shown here. The book is nice but way too small.

if you want to know something you can look up anything for anyway you are feeling

I am an engineer. I was curious what kind of power that you can get from small power projects. This is an excellent book is describing what you can get from water with all the basic info on the elements: water, head, flow rate, battery, alternator, turbine. A feature of the book that I thought was very good is the rating system for how much power one needs on a scale of 1 to 6. In particular, I was interested in how much power to run a refrigerator. This book had the answer.

Not the best book I've read about Microhydro. I read one published in the 70's and it did a much better job explaining how electricity works and the problems associated with making power from water. Through out microhydro he make references to other parts of the book, it was kind of like teasers when you are watching bad tv, "in just a moment we'll find out what's in Al Capone's secret vault". It was like he didn't have enough to say so he kept stretching it out and repeating things he already said. He also kept talking about the case studies at the end of the book. They were not too informative. All and all I just wanted to let people know I was disappointed. This was supposed to be The Book on microhydro and it just didn't measure up . I more recently read a catch all book for wind, water and solar energy and it did a great job. I would recommend "Power with Nature Second Edition: Alternative Energy Solutions for Homeowners Updated"

Great resource for small hydro generation, consider if you have access to water. Sun doe not always shine, wind does not alway blow.

I have a passing interest in small scale microhydro.I was an electrician and electronics tech in a previous life. Where this book goes wrong is probably its strong point at the same time. It is written for those that have some training in electronics and electrical engineering. An average Joe would probably not get all of the references in this book, which is ok. Electricity, especially that which could be generated by one of these plants can be fatal. Mucking around with that is just dangerous. I think as a person that has training in this field, this book is still a bit inadequate. Because it attempts to straddle the line of easy to understand and at the same time be technical to the folks that need it, it never quite sits well with the general reader.Overall its still a pretty good book on the subject, probably not a primer but not useless either. Thanks for reading my review.

If you have a small stream, you can produce your own electricity. This book will be a big help. Easy to understand; not too technical. Great specific suggestions as well as a good overview of how this works.

This book has equipped me with the skills I need to build my own microhydro power system. Many thanks to the author.

I did a research paper on the power of GREEN energy. This was an amazing source and a good read overall.

Great thanks
