Such a wonderful read!! A wonderful look into culture via essays. Absolutely loved it!!

What an enjoyable book! Part travel book, part cultural study. A thoughtful collection of short essays from pupils of the Bhutan school about their childhood experiences. The stories give a wonderful insight into the culture of this beautiful country. Many, many color pictures. I felt as if I had traveled there myself. Loved it.

I am fascinated by stories about people and history. This culture is rich in history. What stories these young adults told are stories that will live for their future generations and for people like me, people that will never travel and see first hand their lives still emerging in the electric world we live in. I do judge books by their cover and this cover says so much, the traditional clothing of adorable little girls, but in the same picture are the utility poles we have become accustom to seeing everywhere in our "modern society."The stories are great for anyone wanting a get away and you never have to leave your room. A mini vacation with some education on the side.I know I mentioned the photo on the cover, but the photos inside are fabulous as well. I am attaching one of the pictures that shows their landscape from the monks view. Pretty awesome. This is the kind of book you can get that person that has everything :)

An interesting and personal account based first hand experiences with the country and its people.

This book transported me to this beautiful land. The stories made me feel as if I were there experiencing them myself. I have always wanted to travel the world, but have not been able to leave the USA. Reading, for me, is an escape to another place, another time. This book took me on yet another adventure, far, far from home. Very well written. I loved it!!

Great book! It's a quick and easy read! The people in the stories are delightful. It makes me want to visit there.

In love with this book and the stories! You have to read it, it's also perfect for a cute gift.

Brilliant! I loved every page of it.

I have checked this book out of the library on several occasions to use as a 'reference manual' while making mosaics. I like this book so much that I am going to purchase it to add to my collection of books on mosaics. The book is very thorough in explaining technics, materials, and mosaic lingo. There are color photos which accompany the step-by-step instructions, as well as a number of color-coded mosaic patterns. Each time I peruse the book it inspires me to be creative. This book is a must have for beginner as well as advanced mosaicists.

I am wondering if this review is for another book because sewing machines are not used or referred to in any way in our book. If our book is the one referred to please email back with a page number so that we can clear up any misunderstanding. Thank you.

Too much of the book is on the politics of the NYMEX organization. Leah narrates the book on the timeline of all the chairmen of the NYMEX. One by one she lists out all the chairmen Marks, Guttman, Steinhause and Schaeffer. She goes through discursive discussion of the infighting and political battles these chairmen had with their vice chairmen and other board members. Only problem is who really cares? I was looking more for the tawdry locker room stories of the demimonde of traders doing coke on the trading floor or other traders pimping out their clerks. You can also tell the author has no clue in economics. Toward the end of the book she is actually questioning the US dollar (the reserve currency of the world) as being worthless in favor of oil becoming a world backed currency or a petro backed US dollar. Haahaaahaha! Are you kidding me? This was in '08, the author was making these types of statements in the book, still not understandable. Like that will solve the problem! Backing the US dollar with a volatile commodity that went to $147 and then crashed to $30 in '08. Will someone tell Leah that currencies are supposed to be stable to facilitate an economy in the buying and selling of goods.

It's impossible for me to hear the soft roar of the gasoline pump as it feeds my hungry tank without thinking about this terrific book by Leah McGrath Goodman. She lays it all out for you. The greed, deception, manipulation, and downright fraud of the oil trading business. It's astonishing that we let these thieves ratchet up the price of oil using every illusory trick in the book, while we pull into the local station and complain under our breath about the price of a gallon of gas steadily increasing while we (nor anyone in power who've all been bought and paid for by big oil) do absolutely nothing about it. Such is our apathetic malaise. Ms. Goodman gives us a great read and I couldn't recommend this great book any higher. Many thanks to her for lifting the veil and letting us see inside.

True insider accounts that elicit laughter, outrage and shock all at once. Extraordinary inside look at how markets work and why often they don't.

Right on target. Tell it like it is and was no holds barred. Highly recomend for anyone in the financial markets. Would make a great movie.

Kafka meets Pete Hamill .. like dark cities with odd fascist government angles then you will enjoy. The pace moves you through it quickly but characters are hard to follow and a little bit 2 dimensional

"The Asylum", by Leah Goodman, is an exciting ride through the complex inner workings of NYMEX, commodities trading, and the oil markets, especially for a novice like myself who is unfamiliar with this world. I couldn't put the book down and read it cover-to-cover over the weekend. The author's skillful turn of phrase and weaving together of the personal and professional lives of the major players made for compelling reading. What a fascinating and riveting story! A must-read for both Wall Street insiders and outsiders! I wonder if there's a sequel? In any event, I eagerly look forward to Ms. Goodman's next book, whatever the subject. She is a truly gifted and talented writer who really knows how to tell a story!

It is rare I give a negative review for a book, but feel compelled to do so in this case. If you are buying this book to get a better understanding of how NYMEX affects current oil prices then stare clear as it fails in every way to offer an explanation. Instead this book is like a series of magazine articles on the various characters who made up the NYMEX during its glory years. Notice i write "magazine article"? Thats because even these profiles lack real depth normally found in a book and instead are incredibly repetitive and bland. There is not a single character in this book who you really feel you have gotten to know even slightly below the surface. So the book fails as both an expose on the oil markets and even as an interesting profile on the traders made up the NYMEX. Other than insiders who may get a chuckle recalling some old friends or foes, I can't think of many people who will not find this book at least 100 pages too long and still very much lacking in depth.

The book is great. I just wish people would get out of the mind-set that we need to rely so heavily on fossil fuels. That's the only reason that shenanigans like this are able to occur. What do you think is going to happen when you idolize something so much? Make the priests rich, that's what! Why don't people understand that cars don't have to run on gas? Cars rely on an internal combustion engine. All that basically is is a little controlled fire going on under your hood. Why does it have to burn gas?! Lots of other things burn. Have you ever seen a forest fire? Why don't we take something that we have a lot of and burn that instead? Like take grass for instance. The planet is literally covered in grasses of all different sorts. AND THEY ALL BURN! If we took all the time and money that we spend on creating/overthrowing dictatorships and governments that sit on top of fossil fuels or drilling thousands of feet into the ocean to extract oil and put it into figuring out how to make an internal combustion engine that runs on grass, we would have one by now. There are lots of other things that burn too. Wood burns, but it would take more time to figure out how to put it into a gas tank. And the hoses and such would probably have to be a lot bigger. Paper burns, but we need paper for other things and it would take a lot of chemicals to process enough to run everyone's cars on. No, I think grass is clearly the answer. Anyway, you should read this book!

From my experience, it takes a bit of thought to be able to share the good news in a way that appeals to people and helps them encounter and commit to Christ. The person primarily responsible for sharing the gospel with me over 40 years ago did so in a way that appealed to my heart and my intellect. I think that this book does the same, perhaps leaning more toward the intellect. In fact, Part Two of the book entitled "Religion and the Opening up of the Mind" points to some questions/issues that often stand in the way of sharing the gospel and people embracing it.To me, this is not an easy book to read and understand, but I think that the topics covered do help people think through some issues and be better able to engage people where they are with the many diverse backgrounds we encounter today. The book is not an easy step-by-step method to success (I doubt there really is such a method), but should help to build the intellectual and spiritual background that will help a person be more effective when sharing the gospel.I'd recommend the book and suggest a thoughtful reading. I had to reread one chapter when I realized I hadn't grasped the message the first time.I'll give this book on one of my sons who himself is on pilgrimage with Jesus and is attracted to and convinced of his life-giving message. I think it will help him in his own walk and as he meets searching people along the way.

Bishop Barron shares his insights so articulately and takes the reader to an understanding which one might not be able to reach on one's own. I highly recommend this book! He gives a thought provoking overview of how Christians can have healthy and fruitful religious dialogue with others, and how this is necessary for a healthy society and evangelization of the Good News about Jesus Christ. He encourages us to be courageous in sharing our beliefs, as well as, charitable in listening to the opinions and beliefs of others. In a loving way we can then "lead others by the hand" to come to a deeper understanding of the truth at work in their hearts, their inner yearning for God, which we all have because we were made by God and for personal relationship with Him. Bishop Barron reminds us that the best way to lead others to Christ is by living a life that is transformed by Christ. He so beautifully compares " the burning bush," that is not consumed by the fire, to us as Christians--who can be lit up with the "fire of God's love." This symbol reflects the person who allows God to transform them by His grace at work in them. Please read this book! It will help renew our culture and our own personal encounters with others, oftentimes with those whom we are close to, who may have a difference of opinion or beliefs than we do.

I am rating this book with one star- not because it is a “bad book” but because I think the title, description, and some other comments were not helpful for me. I figure one star will get people’s attention.I suggest a much better title of this book, more accurate of the content, might be “how to have an intellectual, scholarly discussion with an atheist on the existence of God”. I do not think the book was arguing “religion” but more making a logical argument for the existence of God.Religion is what you have after you agree there is a “God” and in "arguing religion" you are discussing which version of God you follow and why. In my part of the world “arguing religion” is what Catholics do with Protestants or Evangelicals. I was hoping this book would help me have better conversations about our respective religions. If you are looking for a book to “argue religion” between different Christian denominations or maybe Christian vs non-Christian I suggest this is not necessarily the book you are looking for.I also agree with others that this was a difficult read mostly due to the very academic structure and vocabulary of the book. I’m a university graduate so I am used to reading this type of material so it's not that I found it difficult but I was hoping for a book that did not require that I sit with my dictionary app open all the time just to get some idea of what the Bishop was trying to say.

Bishop Robert Barron is a truly amazing priest/bishop. This brief yet profound book is theologically correct but given in love and humility. Buy this book!

Unlike Bishop Barron's usual sermons aimed at the masses, this tome aims for a more scholarly, philosophical approach. He assumes a well-educated audience that can respond to the vocabulary of modern and classical philosophy. His approach is classically Scholastic and he holds up Thomas Aquinas and the great Dominican's skill in disputation as a model while recommending we do argue but do it properly.

I have been following Bishop Baron for years through his word on fire ministry. He is the voice to listen to when you want to hear an intelligent Catholic‘s view about a whole range of topics. This is the first book I’ve read that was written by Bishop Baron, and although I shouldn’t have been, I was surprised to see how well he articulates his thoughts. By that I mean I had a very high respect for his intelligence, but reading this book has added to that. Bishop Baron, like C.S. Lewis, has the uncommon ability to take complex subjects and simplify them without watering down the meaning of what he’s talking about. This book is very important, in my view the most important subject one can talk about. If you have any interest in religion at all, this book is a must read.

we will see

Excelent book, easy to read, very clarifying, it was a great help for me.

I just received my Richard Bertinet Crumb book today. I already purchased his Dough and Crust books and also went to his Bertinet Cooking School in Bath, England, a few years ago. If you can go....do! He is a wonderful teacher and it was a fun class. If you can't, at least purchase his new book, which is my favorite of all of his bread books. The photography and step by step instruction is great. He also teaches his method of slapping the dough, which is a skill learned over time, but results in beautiful breads.

BREAD MAKER RICHARD HAS OUTDONE HIMSELF YET AGAIN! I HAVE HIS ENTIRE COLLECTION AND LOVE EACH ONE, THE WAY HE DESCRIBES THE USE OF HIS TECHNIQUES IS SO EASY TO UNDERSTAND. YOU WON’T REGRET PURCHASING THIS BOOK ITS GREAT. MY HOPE IS TO TAKE A COURSE FROM RICHARD SOON.

#719,461 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I never thought I’d be reading a book like this at this point in my life, but it sounded interesting so decided to give it a go. Anyone of any age benefits from this…even if you’re going through menopause. This really puts this function of a woman’s body into perspective for those of us who thought of it as a “curse” all our lives and how it is tied with so many other aspects of our health, acting as a barometer or measure for other issues we may have going on. It should be required reading for all teenage girls, and it might even encourage lifelong healthier habits in taking care of their body. Wouldn’t hurt for males in our lives to read it also. Definitely worth the read.I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is an absolute MUST READ for every woman (in this case, I mean biologically). There are so many things we don't talk about that make up the experience of being a woman, and periods are part of that. Or rather, periods are talked about, but the narrative is so incredibly cherry-picked that it affects our whole view on something that is completely natural and has been there in the lives of women basically since the dawn of time, and it affects it in certain, most often negative, ways. Heavy Flow is a book meant to not only open up this conversation, but speak about it as should be spoken about – on women's terms, as well as educate its reader about the myths associated with this part of women's lives, while explaining and promoting natural ways in which you could influence your cycle for your own wellbeing and health. The book promotes understanding and educating yourself, and l'm sure it will teach you at least a few things you didn't know about your own body.Heavy Flow is a book centered on clearing up the myths around periods, meant to explain the mechanisms behind them and how it ties into your overall health. It's meant to help you understand that periods are only a part of your menstrual cycle, and period health tells you much more about your body than just how fertile it is. Amanda Laird tackles all sorts of cultural and emotional topics connected with periods, and not only this – at the end of the book, you will find several chapters on nutrition, hormone balance and self-care to let you understand more about self-regulation and how to balance yourself, if you are feeling off in your current day to day. What Might We Not Know About Our Periods? As it turns out, we might not know quite a lot. Pretty much to the point where we should rather ask ourselves about what we actually know, as opposed to what we don't know about our periods. Amanda Laird talks a lot about this, and why it is this way – starting with societal stigma that we have been raised with, and ending with the fact that most health classes are actually funded and backed by commercial entities that just want to sell you their hygiene products. The period narrative has been created and maintained by men and corporate entities – both of which don't really have much to do with how women experience it (and back when the sanitary product narrative began, I'm pretty sure there weren't even many women working in those companies either, if at all.)This is partly why I stayed glued to Heavy Flow and finished it in one evening. The amount of myths, historical facts and trivia you might have never known about periods and conception is huge. And to think that talking about periods publicly has only become a thing in the past several years is staggering. What Are Some Of These Facts You Might Not Know?Well, for example, did you ever consider that your period is actually only a tiny part of your menstrual cycle? I wouldn't expect anyone not actively trying to conceive to even be aware of this, because it isn't common knowledge at all. Part of the reason for this, again, is that we're only taught these facts about our periods that help companies sell us more pads and tampons (like how periods are gross, inconvenient, a hindrance to an active life and god forbid should anyone ever find out that we're on our period right now, or really... ever!) Another one, this time one about contraception. How many of you know, especially if you're on the pill yourself, that the 'period' you have when you're on it, is actually no period at all? lts actually just a bleed that happens because your body is suddenly starved of the synthetic hormones you've been taking for the past few weeks. This bleed is not really necessary, but has been adopted mostly as a marketing technique when the pill was invented – because women felt just very uncomfortable about suddenly not having periods at all.How We View Our PeriodsOr rather, how we don't really view them as ours! We have been taught to only see our periods in the light of fertility. Its part of the process of having children. That's it!Except its not.A period is part of being a healthy female. It's a general indicator of your health, and an outcome of certain processes in your body that regulate so much more than just your ability to have children or not. Part of the reason we don't "own" our periods, for these of us who choose to have natural ones, is because we're taught that they have nothing to do with us and are actually unnecessary, a hindrance, if you are not currently attempting to have children. Heavy Flow talks about this in depth and I think every woman should get familiar with this info and this reasoning. Having a menstrual cycle is part of a healthy body. You wouldn't expect to remove a wheel from a car and expect it to keep moving like it did before. Except that's what millions of women do to their bodies every day by disrupting part of their natural hormonal cycle.I have to mention though, that this book is not against the pill – the author herself has used it for long periods in her life, like a lot of women do. It is an enabler for a lot of women to lead the lives they want to lead, to let them achieve careers, for one thing, and not only that. However, when doing something that concerns your health, you should know everything about it. You shouldn't do it "just because everyone is doing it" or "because that's the easiest way and it's fine". You should know all the whys and the hows, because that's the only way to make a rational, informed decision about your body and your health.Practical Odds And Ends In Heavy FlowBut Heavy Flow isn't just about the facts or the histories. It also has chapters devoted purely to how you can make a difference in your life – by regulating your cycle if you're experiencing painful or irregular periods, or even about how to ensure that your doctor will hear you out and take you seriously – because a lot of women still experience a lack of understanding from professionals when it comes to period trouble – on the grounds that periods ARE trouble and nothing can be done about it (which is an outlook that should go back to the 19th century and stay there.) There is quite a lot about nutrition in Heavy Flow, as well as general lifestyle tips about what can help you if you're struggling. There are parts that can help you understand what processes are happening in your body and why, and what are your options. More than that, Heavy Flow treats your cycle health as part of your overall health, and may start you out on the way of looking at the whole, as opposed to particular parts of the body and trying to find separate symptoms relating to only those separated parts.Overall...The body is a whole. And looking at it like that, periods are also part of the whole. Heavy Flow is a good resource to take the first steps towards understanding yourself as a whole and taking steps to connect to your femininity. I can definitely recommend it, and I think it's required reading for every female out there. I will certainly be recommending it to all of my friends.I thank Dundurn for giving me a free copy of the book in exchange to my honest opinion. Receiving the book for free does not affect my opinion.

Thank you to NetGalley, Dundorn, and Amanda Laird for an ebook copy to review. As always, an honest review from me.My rating is 4.5 stars, but since there aren't half stars I always round up.Like:- Discusses why feminists don’t talk about menstruation more- Its the adult version of the period book, but with tons of positive health information not just focused on fear and embarrassment- More natural approach not because the author believes Western medicine is evil, but because there are many easy healthy ways you can take control of your health- Mentions TSS and menstrual cups - yes! There’s so much misinformation out there about these.Love:- #PeriodPositive- The discussion of how stress can negatively affect hormones, health and the menstrual cycle- Focuses on the period as the fifth vital sign - sounds weird but actually makes a lot of sense- Gets more people talking about menstruation- Menstruation doesn’t not equal being a woman (discusses trans men and women, gender non binary people, menopause, medical reasons for not menstruating, birth control, and more)- Overall atmosphere of the book - not preachy but she’s giving the information so you can do what’s best for youDislike:- Nutritionist is not the same qualifications and education as a dietitian, but the author’s knowledge seems well researched, science based and logical. She’s not going to recommend too many weird things that won’t work or are harmful.Wish that: —-Overall, a wonderful book all about menstruation. It educates, empowers and supports the people reading it. A great mix of science based Western medicine and alternative health practices to support your entire mind, body and soul throughout your menstrual cycle.

Heavy Flow changed my life. I only recently started becoming more comfortable with my body's functions, but I'd decided (before reading) that I wanted to eventually become a midwife. The prerequisite to that, of course, is understanding the reproductive system. While this book doesn't provide enough knowledge to make me an expert (no one book can do that), it gave me an excellent jumping board. Laird confirms a lot of the hunches I had about periods: they don't necessarily need to be painful and bodily awareness, as well as some lifestyle changes, can go a long way to helping us manage them.In the book, Laird explains what the organs are and how they work, then details the entire menstrual cycle step-by-step. She does so in an easy-to-understand way, so don't be alarmed. She's also very cognizant of the fact that some people may have trauma related to periods, childbirth, fertility and sex. Towards the end of the book, Laird covers some common ailments related to periods and uteruses and offers suggestions. In my opinion, she offers enough information for menstruating people to go to the doctor and start getting the right tests (and diagnoses). I requested this book at the suggestion of another book blogger (Evelina at Avalinah's Books), and now I cannot recommend this one enough!

The End of the Wild (Boston Review Books), by Stephen M. Meyer

From Booklist

Meyer presents a to-the-point, X-ray-explicit diagnosis of the state of the biosphere, and the prognosis is not good. So pervasive is humankind, he argues, instead of natural selection we now have human selection. Other species must adapt to our climate-changing presence, as have the common rat and the white-tailed deer, or face extinction. Hundreds of thousands of organisms, including such splendid animals as the African elephant and the giant panda, have become "relic species" as they struggle to maintain their foothold in environments radically altered by human development. The species we choose to protect for economic or aesthetic reasons are relegated to "boutique populations" in bioreserves, which are, in truth, the "-antithesis of the wild." Meyer outlines the human-spun "web of threats" to biodiversity and warns not of an end of life but of biodiversity, resulting in "a peculiarly homogenized assemblage" of human-adapted organisms. Brisk and shocking, Meyer's grim vision is a snap to attention. We must acquire an ecological perspective if we hope to save any remnant of life's many--splendored bounty. Review

Meyer blends factual evidence with expressive prowess in such a way that his ideas cannot fail to make an impression. He offers enlightening illustrations and presents his argument with extraordinary clarity.―Rebecca S. Bundhun, New StatesmanThis book is an exemplar of clear, structured polemical writing, a 10,000-word essay in which each word serves a purpose. In just 97 quarto-sized pages, Meyer offers a more powerful and convincing dissection of the human predicament in relations to biodiversity than most full-length academic books.―Mike Hulme , Times Higher Education Supplement

Fascinating, if true. This brief, brilliant bold assertion says humans have created an ecological collapse that rivals the extinction of dinosaurs when 76 percent of Earth's life forms went extinct. It's a bold assertion presumably supported by Meyer's academic credentials plus the ethics of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in not suffering fools. Meyer's argument is concise: ". . . humanity has pounded the wild into a shape that fits its needs . . . coexisting with nature has always meant taming it . . . we have lost the wild for now . . . perhaps in five or ten million years it will return." Instead of the wild diversity that now exists, Meyer asserts, "Everyone will enjoy English housed sparrows; no one will enjoy wood thrushes." Okay - - who misses the passenger pigeon? Who knows what it was? How different is our society today because no one has ever seen a live passenger pigeon? Or, in more immediate terms, who would miss the Irish if they vanished? Would the world be richer or poorer without Catalans? What value were the Beothuks? Do we really need the Jews? We know about the Holocust of the Jews and its impact. But who knows about the Beothuks? Likewise,we need an examination of what life on earth will be like without the wood thrush and 75 percent of other species. "Never send to know for whom the bell tolls," wrote John Donne in 1633; this admonition applies to more than our neighbors, it applies to the world around us. Meyer says the bell is tolling. It makes his book fascinating.

Important book - had to read it for school.

I used this for a college class and ended up keeping it. Really good information.

Great condition, excellent read.

The problem is stated succinctly. It is huge. We are acting as if there is no cost to us as a population. Thenhe States the solution as a bigger version of the same thing we have been doing. In fact there is no solution but delaying the worst impacts of the ultimate destruction of the wild.

This is really two books with almost diametrically opposed view. The first of the book talks about how the endangered species cannot be saved by efforts by man.The second part of the book speaks of a total control of the earth by "what?" He says the governments can't do it and somehow man must realize that each man must change and live like "what?. Again there is no answer from the author, but he is sure that all of mankind must change to (as best I can figure out) live with "nature". He is speaking of drastic changes for mankind.

The essence of this book is that we must stop the human selection process of species and pursue certain avenues of conservation which actually do work. Its a quick, terse, highly worthwhile read. Its broken into seven short sections, the following quotes being the last line of each. I went ahead and pasted them in from my own notes to give a good taste of the author's writing.1 "The broad path for biological evolution is now set for the next several million years. And in this sense the extinction crisis-- the race to save the composition, structure, and organization of biodiversity as it exists today--is over, and we have lost."2 "Ecosystems will experience a dumbing down as built-in redundancies are eliminated. The web of life will become the strand of life."3 "Thus, climate change and economic globalization are powerful against of human selection that amplify and make irreversible the familiar, localized human disturbances that undermine biodiversity."4 "The wild will cease to exist even if we can manufacture each of its constituent parts."5 "The ecomomic toll from the benign neglect of alien weedy species would be globally disastrous . . and would mean the demise of a large proportion of relic species."6 "What is the essence of our own morality if it fails to encompass most of the earth?"7 "We have lost the wild for now. Perhaps in 5-10 million years it will return."
