The End of the Wild (Boston Review Books), by Stephen M. Meyer

From Booklist

Meyer presents a to-the-point, X-ray-explicit diagnosis of the state of the biosphere, and the prognosis is not good. So pervasive is humankind, he argues, instead of natural selection we now have human selection. Other species must adapt to our climate-changing presence, as have the common rat and the white-tailed deer, or face extinction. Hundreds of thousands of organisms, including such splendid animals as the African elephant and the giant panda, have become "relic species" as they struggle to maintain their foothold in environments radically altered by human development. The species we choose to protect for economic or aesthetic reasons are relegated to "boutique populations" in bioreserves, which are, in truth, the "-antithesis of the wild." Meyer outlines the human-spun "web of threats" to biodiversity and warns not of an end of life but of biodiversity, resulting in "a peculiarly homogenized assemblage" of human-adapted organisms. Brisk and shocking, Meyer's grim vision is a snap to attention. We must acquire an ecological perspective if we hope to save any remnant of life's many--splendored bounty. Review

Meyer blends factual evidence with expressive prowess in such a way that his ideas cannot fail to make an impression. He offers enlightening illustrations and presents his argument with extraordinary clarity.―Rebecca S. Bundhun, New StatesmanThis book is an exemplar of clear, structured polemical writing, a 10,000-word essay in which each word serves a purpose. In just 97 quarto-sized pages, Meyer offers a more powerful and convincing dissection of the human predicament in relations to biodiversity than most full-length academic books.―Mike Hulme , Times Higher Education Supplement

Fascinating, if true. This brief, brilliant bold assertion says humans have created an ecological collapse that rivals the extinction of dinosaurs when 76 percent of Earth's life forms went extinct. It's a bold assertion presumably supported by Meyer's academic credentials plus the ethics of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in not suffering fools. Meyer's argument is concise: ". . . humanity has pounded the wild into a shape that fits its needs . . . coexisting with nature has always meant taming it . . . we have lost the wild for now . . . perhaps in five or ten million years it will return." Instead of the wild diversity that now exists, Meyer asserts, "Everyone will enjoy English housed sparrows; no one will enjoy wood thrushes." Okay - - who misses the passenger pigeon? Who knows what it was? How different is our society today because no one has ever seen a live passenger pigeon? Or, in more immediate terms, who would miss the Irish if they vanished? Would the world be richer or poorer without Catalans? What value were the Beothuks? Do we really need the Jews? We know about the Holocust of the Jews and its impact. But who knows about the Beothuks? Likewise,we need an examination of what life on earth will be like without the wood thrush and 75 percent of other species. "Never send to know for whom the bell tolls," wrote John Donne in 1633; this admonition applies to more than our neighbors, it applies to the world around us. Meyer says the bell is tolling. It makes his book fascinating.

Important book - had to read it for school.

I used this for a college class and ended up keeping it. Really good information.

Great condition, excellent read.

The problem is stated succinctly. It is huge. We are acting as if there is no cost to us as a population. Thenhe States the solution as a bigger version of the same thing we have been doing. In fact there is no solution but delaying the worst impacts of the ultimate destruction of the wild.

This is really two books with almost diametrically opposed view. The first of the book talks about how the endangered species cannot be saved by efforts by man.The second part of the book speaks of a total control of the earth by "what?" He says the governments can't do it and somehow man must realize that each man must change and live like "what?. Again there is no answer from the author, but he is sure that all of mankind must change to (as best I can figure out) live with "nature". He is speaking of drastic changes for mankind.

The essence of this book is that we must stop the human selection process of species and pursue certain avenues of conservation which actually do work. Its a quick, terse, highly worthwhile read. Its broken into seven short sections, the following quotes being the last line of each. I went ahead and pasted them in from my own notes to give a good taste of the author's writing.1 "The broad path for biological evolution is now set for the next several million years. And in this sense the extinction crisis-- the race to save the composition, structure, and organization of biodiversity as it exists today--is over, and we have lost."2 "Ecosystems will experience a dumbing down as built-in redundancies are eliminated. The web of life will become the strand of life."3 "Thus, climate change and economic globalization are powerful against of human selection that amplify and make irreversible the familiar, localized human disturbances that undermine biodiversity."4 "The wild will cease to exist even if we can manufacture each of its constituent parts."5 "The ecomomic toll from the benign neglect of alien weedy species would be globally disastrous . . and would mean the demise of a large proportion of relic species."6 "What is the essence of our own morality if it fails to encompass most of the earth?"7 "We have lost the wild for now. Perhaps in 5-10 million years it will return."

Wow, I sure loved this true life adventure book. Though I'm not a whitewater river running guy, but I do other outdoor adventures, one doesn't need to be to enjoy this book and what this guy did over and over again. Way ahead of his time. I had a hard time putting the book down each night. And of course like others, the ending left many questions that results in only speculation. Much like "Into the Wild" ended with - speculation.

Engaging history of a young man who finds fulfillment in building boats and running rivers, but discovers that this focus is too narrow for true and lasting happiness. I enjoyed every page of this well written and thoroughly researched book.

After multiple private trips down the Grand Canyon, reading this story was absolutely delightful. Not to be missed amongst the multitude of book chronicling Grand Canyon river running adventure. Loved it.

Great book, great story!

A great book to read if you are a river rat. I live in Oregon and raft rivers and I had not heard about Carl. A great story about a very private and driven man.

I am a whitewater nut -Buzz had an interesting life

If you like Grand Canyon history and some perspective on early boatmen, you will not be sorry to get this read.

Great Book! Buzz is an amazing river character, we should all aspire to be like him

When the celebrated poet Boris Pasternak began the novel Doctor Zhivago in 1945, he and his fellow Russian writers were living under the terrifying, watchful eye of Joseph Stalin. Pasternak had lived through the exhilaration and the disillusionment of the 1917 October Revolution and he wanted to write a piece of fiction that would capture the events surrounding it, even if it meant revealing the historic flaws that continued to infect the repressive government under which he lived. When he finished Doctor Zhivago in 1955 it was (predictably) rejected by the Soviet press so Pasternak smuggled the manuscript into Italy to be translated and published. “It does not matter what might happen to me,” he told his friend, Isaiah Berlin. “My life is finished. The book is my last word to the civilized world.” Doctor Zhivago made its way around the globe at warp speed, coming full circle in 1958 when the CIA ’s Russian-language edition was smuggled back into the Soviet Union for Pasternak’s countrymen to read. Based on newly released documents, Finn and Couvée’s account reads like a spy thriller with a deeply flawed but heroic writer at its center. History, Cold War politics, romance, intrigue…this book-about-a-book packs a punch.

During the Cold War, the CIA was engaged in relentless global warfare with the Kremlin. The agency used a host of front organizations and phony foundations, spent many millions of dollars to fund concert tours, art exhibitions, magazines, academic research, student activities and book publishing. All theses were weapons in the covert action against the Soviet Union masterminded by George Kennan, who was the intellectual author behind this. One estimate says that some 10 million books and periodicals were distributed by the CIA in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. "Doctor Zhivago" was one of those books which was printed and distributed clandestinely in the main Russian cities. This book, which is just one episode in the colossal ideological battle between the two superpowers, is excellent and is very original. The authors have put in a tremendous effort in researching its topic, using many untapped archives and interviews. It reads like a fast best-selling political thriller. This is a fascinating account of the propaganda machines the USA used against the Eastern Bloc, showing Pasternak's and his friends' courage and it shows to what extent the battle for the minds of the readers in the East was conducted. It is also a detailed story about the cultural and intellectual background of the thirties to the fifties in the USSR.This battle over the publication of "Doctor Zhivago" was one of the first efforts by the CIA to leverage books as instruments of political warfare. It was Khrushchev himself who admitted in the end that the Russians "caused much harm to the Soviet Union "and added that he was "truly sorry for the way he behaved toward Pasternak".There were additional writers who followed Pasternak's way, among them Solzhenitsyn and Brodsky. This book is highly recommended.

This is a fascinating story that combines a mini-biography of Dr. Zhivago's writer, Boris Pasternak; intellectual life in the Soviet Union during the Cold War; and how on one of the best books of the 20th century overcame tremendous odds to become an international best seller. Particularly, interesting was how Pasternak was determined to see his book read on a worldwide basis with a love of his homeland, albeit not its government. After rejecting the Nobel prize, he could have accepted exile and riches in the West, but could not bring himself to leave Russia. That, of course, is the overview. Equally fascinating are the details of how the book found its way out of the Soviet Union; the interplay between Pasternak and other intellectuals; and a rather different family life. A good read.

This excellent tale of cold war intrigue and the misery of artistic life in the USSR, is a tribute to the foolishness of governments which try to suppress thought and artistic expression, and also is a tribute to the spirit of a great artist, Boris Pasternak, who persisted in the face of what he knew would be a terrible response, to get what he considered to be his masterpiece published in the west. The role played by the CIA in disseminating Russian language versions of the book and getting them back into the USSR is interesting, but is not the heart of what this book is about. At the end of the day, it is the story of how one great artist resisted the tyranny of the USSR, and also how the USSR made a mountain range out of a mountain in trying to suppress the book. It is a sad story, to me, but one that should be told, and I recommend the book most heartily.-

This is an interesting back story on Boris Pasternak. I had read Dr. Zzhivago when it first came out and it has been one of the best novels I have ever read in my 78 years on this earth. Getting the back story was fascinating, but it had too much detail for me. I got bogged down in the detail. Still I would rate if very high for new content about Pasternak and his family.

I thought this would be a book of Memoirs but had to get as it's my favorite.book and movie for 40 years! I loved rescinding this history of the book and how it got out of Russia. Pasternack seems like such a great man. Loved the book.

Very detailed account of the times and of the life of Pasternak after Dr. Zhivago was published. It is also a view into the general cultural life of Russia at that time. I was fascinated with the details of how the novel got back into Russia and the reaction to it. Pasternak's personal life is also detailed and almost as interesting as the information about the novel. I was not fully aware of what a highly respected and widely read poet Pasternak was. His treatment by the power structure and their incredible fear of his work are difficult to fathom. It is an in depth account of a great man who was also a great writer.

Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide

From Publishers Weekly

Henry Jenkins, founder and director of MIT's comparative media studies program, debunks outdated ideas of the digital revolution in this remarkable book, proving that new media will not simply replace old media, but rather will learn to interact with it in a complex relationship he calls "convergence culture." The book's goal is to explain how convergence is currently impacting the relationship among media audiences, producers and content, a far from easy undertaking. As Jenkins says, "there will be no magical black box that puts everything in order again." Jenkins takes pains to prove that the notion of convergence culture is not primarily a technological revolution; through a number of well-chosen examples, Jenkins shows that it is more a cultural shift, dependent on the active participation of the consumers working in a social dynamic. He references recent media franchises like Survivor, The Matrix, and American Idol to show how the new participatory culture of consumers can be utilized for popular success and increased exposure. Jenkins' insights are gripping and his prose is surprisingly entertaining and lucid for a book that is, at its core, intellectually rigorous. Though wordy at times, Jenkins' impressive ability to break down complex concepts into readable prose makes this study vital and engaging.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. What’s more, the book happens to be a briskly entertaining read―as startling, inventive, and witty as the culture it documents. It should be mandatory reading for anyone trying to make sense of today’s popular culture—but thankfully, a book this fun to read doesn’t need a mandate.”-Steven Johnson, author of the national bestseller, Everything Bad Is Good For You“The standard convergence narrative of recent years presents media concentration as a threat both to the diversity of communication channels and to individuals’ opportunities to engage in public discourse. A respected and well-established media scholar, Jenkins here counters such pessimistic perspectives on the brave new media world with theoretical and evidentiary attestations to the growing power of individuals and grassroots groups to affect the larger media landscape.”-Choice“;Jenkins offers crucial insight into an unexpected and unforeseen future. Unlike most predictions about how New Media will shape the world in which we live, the reality is turning out far stranger and more interesting than we might have imagined. The social implications of this change could be staggering.”-Will Wright, creator of SimCity and The Sims“For any Sony PS3 execs out there wondering why their technological masterpiece is being ridiculed by customers before its even released . . . Convergence Culture is a must read . . . Jenkins offers numerous insights on how technology and media professionals can forge better relationships with their customers.”-Slashdot“;I thought I knew twenty-first century pop media until I read Henry Jenkins. The fresh research and radical insights in Convergence Culture deserve a wide and thoughtful readership. Bring on the monolithic block of eyeballs”-Bruce Sterling, author, blogger, visionary“Remarkable . . . Jenkins’ insights are gripping and his prose is surprisingly entertaining and lucid for a book that is, at its core, intellectually rigorous . . . Jenkins’ impressive ability to break down complex concepts into readable prose makes this study vital and engaging.”-Publishers Weekly“;Jenkins tries to bring clarity to cultural changes that are melting and morphing into new shapes on an hourly, daily, weekly, monthly basis. Convergence Culture provides a view that looks at the restless ocean and tracks the currents rather than just looking at the individual rocks on the beach.”-The McClatchy Newspapers

A fascinating look at how popular culture and brands work. Recommended for any course of media, or just for the reader who is interested in learning more on their own.

Fascinating read for any. Reading for part of my media communications graduate class, but Jenkins work can (and should) be enjoyed by any. Focusing on how audiences engage and interact with commercial media production companies is an imperative skill for any that consume media on a daily basis. The book reads quickly because Jenkins discusses interesting communities within the greater realm of popular culture, and he writes with a warm and active voice that stands out from traditional, monotone academic books. Great read!

Dr. Jenkins has achieved something special with this text--he's synthesized a few generations of technological achievement, humanities computing practices, and popular culture into an accessible, insightful treatise on the power of emerging media. While focusing on contemporary examples, Jenkins never loses sight of the historical perspective. It's a watershed text for those interested in looking at how the full flower of our communication efforts has come into bloom in recent years, and how that condition is impacting content creators, activists, fans, and citizens...

Convergence Culture offers some very interesting perspectives and case studies for everyone, but especially for media professionals. There are even valuable lessons here to extrapolate for the book publishing industry, although Jenkins doesn't focus much on the book world. He does discuss Harry Potter, but mostly in the context of fan fiction.Jenkins discussion of transmedia storytelling is fascinating, and fits together very well with Frank Rose's discussion in The Art of Immersion. The discussion of transmedia storytelling combines Jenkins' three concepts of media convergence, participating culture, and collective intelligence, because it requires consumers to move across multiple media and collaboration with a fan community to fully experience a story. As mentioned above, he uses the example of the Matrix movies to illustrate this point. Traditionally, all the information viewers needed to fully understand a movie were contained in the movie itself and presented in a mostly linear way that was easy to grasp, but movies like The Matrix provide open ended clues and loose strands that can't be fully understood without collaborating with other fans through online communities and by taking part in other extensions of the story in different mediums such as comics and video games. In some cases, these extensions may provide more background or a deeper understanding of the movie, or they might be completely new tangents unexplored in the movie. It will be interesting to see if this mode of story telling continues to gain traction.Overall I enjoyed reading Convergence Culture, especially having also previously read The Art of Immersion. I do think Jenkins was trying to fit too much into the book, and at times the organization was a bit clunky. Each chapter focused on a particular TV show or movie as an example, so there was a chapter that discussed Survivor and the concepts of fan paticipation and "spoiling," the process by which fans share information that hasn't been aired yet about popular TV shows online. There was also a chapter on American Idol and advertising and fan participation. I think it may have been a better idea to organize the book around these ideas and provide more examples as opposed to organizing the book by show or movie. By far my favorite chapter was the one that focused on transmedia storytelling and The Matrix. By comparison, the last chapter on politics and popular culture and the afterword on the ramifications of YouTube on politics, while interesting and important, seemed out of place.Perhaps my biggest gripe was how dated the book seemed. Despite being published in 2008 (the paperback was published in 2008, the hardcover in 2006), some of the examples given and, for instance, the lengthy explanation on what a blog is, made the book feel very dated, which goes to show how rapid the media landscape is changing. I would definitely recommend reading this book either before or after The Art of Immersion for a more well-rounded view.

Needed this book for a college course. If you are not into the subject, this can be a very difficult and tedious read. The author is well respected for his significant contributions on the subject matter, so for that I do give him credit for his thorough work. But I gained very little not being a communications major and having to use this book.

I purchased this for an English class. It's okay. I didn't find the content to be very entertaining but again, I only purchased this for a class. Other than that the book was delivered quickly through the kindle app.

Thanks!

I had never considered some of the points that Jenkins puts forth in this book. Convergence Culture is a book about many of the things that technology is incorporating into our lives that we are slowly taking for granted. If you have ever been interested in how technology is changing how we view the world, this is a good book to look at. The chapters focusing on Survivor, The Matrix, and Harry Potter fanficton are all of great interest.

Gringos In Paradise reads like a blog of day to day joys and aggravations in moving to Honduras and is probably similar to what gringos experience throughout Central America. I related to this book since I have visited the town where the author and her husband moved to (El Porvenir, Honduras) several times. The beginning section about leaving Hawaii dragged a bit but once they were on their way and in Honduras, it was a fun read.

I have visited Honduras over 20 times in the past 35 years and found this book to provide meaningful insight into Honduran culture and way of life. The author and her husband approached their move to Honduras with open minds and hearts, and obviously with a perspective that cultural differences should be embraced and understood, rather than viewed as "bad" simply because they are different from the way things are done in the U.S.The book is really a series of short stories that range in time from the couple's initial decision to move to paradise (somewhere), to the decision that Honduras was the paradise they sought to their day-to-day experiences - many of which are quite funny - after the move to their new home on the Honduran coast. What made the book particularly appealing was the depth of emotion and thought that went into the couple's leaving their old life and friends, interacting with new neighbors, local workers, and even their cat, who had to endure the move from the old paradise (Hawai'i) to the new.I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about visiting or moving to Honduras, as well as to anyone who wants insight as to how to approach cultural differences with an attitude of understanding and sensitivity.

I was a little annoyed by this book. The writing is amateurish at best, with lots of punctuation and grammatical errors, but the thing that really got me was the author's apparent lack of interest in really knowing and enjoying her new environment. The scene she writes of holing up in her dark, air conditioned bedroom, watching English language DVDs to drown out the noise of the Semana Santa festival party going on next door stunned me. Did she ever consider going to the party and learning about some of the customs and people of her newly adopted country? If you enjoyed this book, you'll really enjoy the other "Gringos in Paradise" book by Barry Golson.

This book never quite reached me. Too much about other things in their life and too little about honduran life

I agree fully with the other 1 and 2 star reviews. On the positive side, there are a few entertaining mini-chapters, and I'm sure the author and her husband are very nice folks, but unfortunately this book is poor overall. It's written very simplistically, and does indeed flirt with being offensive in a few condescending-sounding spots, where the author describes some of the 'simpler' aspects of the culture while admittedly not really understanding it much or trying very hard to familiarize herself with it. It comes off as a rudimentary writeup of some privileged Americans moving to a new culture with insufficient preparation or experience. It's long on personal musings about spiritual enlightenment and very short on information about Honduras and it's people. To be sure, there are a few good nuggets... but they get lost in the sauce about their cat, the other places she's been, her business, her personal habits and musings, etc.. etc.. It's entertaining in a few spots, but not my cup of tea.

Not only do I love to travel, but I love reading about other people traveling and especially from a faraway place like Honduras. With that said, this book did not let me down. It satiated my thirst for high adventure and enjoyable reading. When it comes to moving from one place to the other, I have found there are two kinds of people. The first group - I call the thinker group - analyzes every single detail down to will the new place be nicer than the one I am comfortable in now - and the second group which I call the fly by the seat of their pants group who don't think anything of just upping up and leaving and letting things fall as they may. I am unfortunately in the first group and I so envy the second group which the group I would place Malana. Oh to be able to read about doing the things I'm too fearful to do! But isn't that what reading books is all about? An escape? Learning how others did the things you're too scared to do?Such a delightful book, a pleasure to read and so encouraging for born again nomads like me! I give this book a five star rating for its content, writing style and overall enjoyment.

My initial draw to this book was the fact that it was set in Honduras. I have been to Honduras myself 7 times and when I seen this book come up for review I wanted to read about Americans who actually live there. As the book states, "Visiting a third world country is much different than seeing it as your home."I found the book a delightful look into an area I know, and found myself nodding as Malana describes what the driving is like I remember my first time there ( as a passenger in a van) I just closed my eyes I really couldn't watch! As Malana talks about not taking water for granted that is really an eye opener as well to be where you don't always have it.Chapter by chapter I laughed and felt as though Malana had literally brought my along with her. With a journal type flare, Malana shares the adventures and misadventures and I walked beside her page by page and am thankful for the journey.

I own probably a dozen ATK cookbooks, so if I was ever going to try a "healthy" cookbook, this one was the brand I knew I could trust most. Some really fantastic recipes in here. I'm more of a traditional southern/Texan style cook, so the recipes have to be flavorful and well done, even healthy versions, or they won't pass the test in our family. I have to admit that I was a little hesitant to add mustard and orange juice in the skillet chicken fajitas, but I knew that it would be our best place to start as a test for whether or not this cookbook would be a keeper. And to our Tex-Mex loving palates, we were all pleasantly surprised as to how much we loved it and that it was as good as any we've ever had in a restaurant or made at home. We've also loved the shepherd's pie and chicken parmesan. The peanut butter cookies, did not make a good impression though. Excited to try more recipes and see what will make it into our "loved" pile.

I am a longtime fan of America's Test Kitchen; I subscribe to the monthly magazine and have many of the cookbooks, so it's tough for the ATK team to bring out a volume that contains enough new material to make it worthwhile for me -- but I am thrilled with this cookbook. This is a 520-page ring-bound book with 800 recipes split into divider sections organized by course: Breakfast, Appetizers, Salads, Soups, Vegetables, Rice and Grains, Pasta, Fish, Poultry, Meat, Vegetarian Entrees, Stir-fries, Grilling, Pizza, Breads, Cookies, Cakes and Fruit Desserts. The volume finishes with a chapter of kid-friendly recipes, an index and informational charts. I've long considered the ATK indexes a weak point in otherwise superb books, but this index is much better! The paper is glossy, which makes them easier to clean, and the binding guarantees a flat page that won't close on you when your hands are covered with something! The four-color printing, layout and fonts make the recipes easy to read and understand, and the pages are filled with informative tips, product testing, and comparative information, all presented in an easy-to-read format. Now for the meat of the thing, as it were -- the recipes, at least what I've tried so far, are terrific. There's something here for everyone, with multiple variations listed which help you accommodate particular diets or preferences, and each recipe includes per-serving calorie, fat and nutritional information.Superb!

Bought this cookbook on the recommendation of many people even though I normally pull recipes off the internet. As a family, we've tried about a dozen of the dinner recipes and every single one has been a big hit with the whole family. I do have to plan ahead when I shop because many of the recipes use ingredients I don't normally keep in stock but the main reason I bought this cookbook is to push us out of the dinner rut we have been in -- the same ten or fifteen dinners over and over -- so it make sense that we have to buy ingredients we don't normally buy. That was the whole point for us! I love that the dinners incorporate so many vegetables, that they are mostly kid-friendly (even the recipes not marked as such) and that the instructions are crystal-clear. My significant other is not quite as confident in the kitchen as I am and the clear directions make it easy for him to handle the dishes on his own.We will definitely being putting a lot more dinners into our rotation now.

I absolutely love this book. It's become the first book I reach for when I'm meal planning. The thing that I appreciate most about the recipes in this book is that the portion sizes are completely realistic. It's not a "1/2 cup of pasta and 2 tablespoons sauce, with a sprinkle of cheese"-type healthy cookbook. There are so many light cookbooks and magazines where a recipe will be 300 calories a serving, but the serving is about a quarter of what a normal person would eat. With the recipes in this book, you can eat like a normal person and actually be full after one serving. I also appreciate the nutritional facts for each recipe, and the endless amount of customization and combinations you can do. Along with full recipes, the book gives you a lot of building blocks that you can use to create a meal (different sauces, variations on recipes, etc.). People who have been frustrated trying to use cookbooks while cooking will also appreciate the divided sections, lay-flat format, and heft of the book. I've made a ton of recipes out of this book so far and have loved every one--and the best thing is that there are TONS of recipes, so I have a lot left to try!

I know I will sound repetitious but I have to agree with many of the other reviewers--the good stuff takes a lot of prep work. There are a few recipes I have tried, though, that are quick and easy. Some examples:Ham and cheese waffles--delicious, relatively easy to prepare, a little salty, loved by all.Chicken quesadillas--a bit of work, tasty, but not OMG I must make these again.Skillet pasta--very tasty and easy to make, loved by all.A longer one was for chewy harvest fruit granola bars--took forever to prepare and the sugar mixture didn't turn into caramel. Not worth the work, but would have worked well as a trail mix.Overall, I will continue to try out different recipes in the book. There hasn't been one (yet) that didn't taste good. Even if the exact recipe doesn't work out, there are so many ways of adding flavor to each recipe that I have already been able to change up the ingredients and cooking methods a little to suit the pickier eaters.Definitely worth the purchase cost, and even better is knowing that I'm helping lower cholesterol and middle-age spread. I wish there was an option to give it a 4 1/2 star, because a 4 is too low.
