This is an excellent book with great theory and some amazing practical examples. Should be in every technical sound library.

While not for a rank beginner, Andy Farnell's book is an excellent review of acoustical principles related to sound design. This book will be of interest to those who do sound design for film, gaming, and even experimental DJing, and could be used for an undergraduate course in a media studies program or in a beginning electronic music class.To illustrate the principles needed for sound design and to conceptionalize the methods of realization of a particular sound emulation, Mr. Farnell utilizes an OpenSource programming language known as Pd (Pure Data). Designing Sound is an excellent introduction to Pd and demonstrates how basic physics principles can be turned into sonic entities.Pd is a project related to programming sound in a similar sense that Processing is related to programming live graphics, and GEM is related to programming live video. Since all of these programming strategies are related, they can be used together (or separately) by artists with interest in live performance art or art installations.Andy Farnell's book is well written and full of interesting problems. If you are looking for a book that will "hand hold" you through every problem you may be somewhat disappointed. On the other hand, if you are willing to use the excellent reference materials for further study, you will be rewarded.

Deep and detailed, not for the faint of heart. I highly recommend this book if you are a professional or just starting out. The does a great job of explaining complex concepts.

My son loves it

I found this book in my quest to learn how to create sounds Ab Initio (from nothing but basic principles, not recorded samples). This is absolutely the right book for those interested in that area. This book is NOT for audio beginners. You will need to have a good grasp of basic digital audio concepts, understand frequency domain analysis concepts, a bit about DSP filters, have payed attention at those Physics classes and at least be familiar with some of the math. Andy tries to get away with not writing too many equations, but he still throws a differential equation on you to explain harmonic oscillators and some trigonometry when explaining modulation, for example. I have found nothing in its 600+ that I would remove or skip over. In fact, I just wish he had written 1,200 more pages!! There are four main sections in the book: Theory, Tools, Techniques and Practicals. Theory includes background information on acoustics, psychoacoustics, sound perception and digital signals. The Tools section will introduce you and get you productive using Pure Data, the free and deceptively simple looking visual sound programming software package used throughout the rest of the book. In Techniques you will get practical information on the various sound synthesis methods at your disposal, and the Practicals section has dozens of example uses of these techniques. You will, for example, learn how to create models for telephone bells, rolling objects, fire, running water, etc.Like another reviewer said, you will not get every single detail of every single technique or theory in this book. You will get enough to get a good idea, good examples and excellent links in the reference sections so you can go wild and study any of the ideas in the book much further by yourself.Some of the sample code links for the MIT Press version of the book are broken. I contacted Andy Farnell directly by email about this, and he was kind enough to point to his other website which does not have this problem . I hope the MIT Press folks fix this soon, but even with the broken links, the code is available in the website in text areas, so you can cut and paste it and save it in a file and it will work, but is more tedious.I could not recommend this book anymore. It's a great introduction into a fascinating field. As a disclaimer, I am not an audio person, but a software engineer interested in audio with a bit of DSP background from school. I imagine audio professionals might have a different experience with the book, but I can't imagine anybody calling it anything but an excellent, epic work.

Fantastic book! Full of wonderful sound design ideas. Great for the musician, and I suspect for the folly artists as well.

However, Mr. Farnell is a master of exposition and explanation, and I'm absorbed by whatever I read in his book. Designing Sound has a particular appeal for Pd people - every example in the book is presented in Pd, and although the author states that it is not a Pd tutorial, beginners may find his presentation especially enjoyable."Amazing book. I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my brother, a single dad of 3 young boys. He’s a very busy business owner. He enjoys good, home-cooked food but is always pressed for time and realistic dinner ideas for himself & his 3 growing boys. He has tried 3 recipes from this book and has been pleasantly surprised at how easy they were to make and how well they turned out. I’m thrilled that he’s added some new meals to his rotation and he seems excited to try out some more new recipes.

Can't wait to give this book to my boyfriend on Christmas! We both love to cook but lately, we've been working so much to the point where we're just exhausted to cook. I thought a slow cooker book would be perfect for him as a father. He could finally start cooking for me and his lil girl. ;) there's so many recipes I cannot wait to try!! Like GUMBO!! yes. thank you! I'm buying more books for christmas!Edit: Jan 8th, 2019...We've been using the slow cooker book ever since christmas. my boyfriend LOVES it. He wakes up at 3AM and starts the slow cooker for the day while he's at work. Most of the food are DELICIOUS. YOU MUST TRY the Gumbo! Lol. :)Get it guys!!

My dad loved it and many of the recipes seemed very easy with minimal ingrediants. Good variety as well!

this is a really sweet little book. well written,very easy to read and understand. i read the whole thing through the first time in one sitting. i didn't use any of the spells or curses pertaining to anyone other than myself. i like to let everyone fend with their own karma with no interference from me if i can:) there are also blessing and curses to remove curses. thats what i used it for.

This book is by no means based on real historical contexts and even the basic tenets of magic seem to be overlooked here. Please take the "curses" in this book as a grain of salt. I gave this book 3 stars simply because I found it extremely entertaining, especially as a practicing witch of over 20 years. From that standpoint (and that standpoint alone) it does not disappoint!

Whether you ever plan to actually use a curse or not, the author does a great job of instruction in all of the why's and when's and how's, etc. to guide you through the process. She has written her manual using plain language and a great deal of 'smile while you're reading' humor. Will the curses work? Yes, if you are wise enough to follow the instructions to the letter, I believe they will!

Dawn is wise to ask us to use the utmost objectivity with regards to why we want to cast a curse in the first place. Dawn seems to have done an extensive amount of research in respect to this ancient art. There is a pretty large section of belgian beers, which is really our favorite style. I think this book will inspire us to broaden our horizons regarding experimenting with different beer styles.We look forward to trying some of these fun delicious recipes.

I cannot recommend this book enough. It teaches coping mechanisms for dealing with the super intense feelings associated with infertility. I wish I had found it sooner! Alice walks you through different approaches to dealing with your feelings including cognitive restructuring, how to deal with others, how to deal with your spouse, and breathing/relaxation exercises. There's even a chapter about knowing when "enough is enough" treatment and alternative ways to build a family. I continuously came back to this book while trying to get pregnant, after an early miscarriage, and while struggling with difficult feelings during a healthy and ultimately successfull pregnancy. I let this book teach me how to have healthy boundaries with insensitive family members with regards to fertility matters. On one page Alice even says she gives you permission to skip any baby showers you are invited to if you think it's going to be too much for you to handle emotionally. This was music to my infertile ears! I just needed someone to tell me it was ok to feel the way I was feeling. This book validated every one of my feelings about being infertile.

This is a really good book for those of us who feel alone in our fertility journey. It isn't a prescription to get pregnant--but it has some pretty darn useful coping skills inside that can be used for just about any unwanted circumstance. I just received this book last Saturday and I started reading it immediately. I wish I would have gotten this book much sooner as I have been struggling with infertility for 2.5 years now. The information that I have read in this book so far is already helping me. I have been putting the techniques to use and working on my Breath Focus to help me when I start to get stressed out. I plan to try the meditation as well in the near future. Dr. Alice Domar is a very wonderful, caring doctor from what I have gathered and I think this is one of the best books I have read on infertility. I find it to be much more helpful and practical than some of the books I have read in the past. I would definitely recommend anyone who is struggling with infertility to purchase this book, whether you think you need it or not! Trust me, this book is useful for someone just learning they have infertility, to someone who has been struggling with it for over 10 years, etc.

This book was... helpful in some places, and very depressing in many chapters. I find that I can't read more than a chapter at a time. The first couple of chapters are quite good. I disagree with the author's insistence that I am supposed to feel depressed and/or angry. I wish that she offered more ways out of those feelings, rather than validating them. I know it's ok for me to feel them, but I'm ready to live in a different emotional world.

this book really helped me a lot. but the first time I read it I thought it was not written for me. it was, and very well. I was just in denial and thought nothing could have helped me in this process. I read it twice and was lucky enough to be part of one of Ali Domar's groups. I have been really surprised of how much I have learned from the book, how helpful it was (and it still is) and what a difference it made. it's a menu of tips and good treatments that you can pick and choose to apply to your life. I have been transformed and I strongly recommended to anyone going through this process and their family and friends who want to be supportive and helpful.

I found this book to be a bit negative at times... But I think that the author addressed the emotional/spiritual issues of infertility very well. Many times she really hit the nail on the head and it was comforting to read that others have felt the same things I'm feeling. In addition, I found some things about the book very helpful. All of her coping strategies were things I already knew. But I still liked the idea of the minis, which is simple to remember and can be used any time. I also loved reading another perspective like talking to your family and friends about infertility. I had been avoiding talking to my parents about it completely. But based on her comments I thought that I would share some of my struggle with my mom (no details) and it went very well and we both felt better. I also keep thinking about the author's statement, which she makes several times throughout the book, that some day this struggle will be over and life will go back to normal and if you really want to be a parent you will be. This keeps me sane when I feel trapped in the nightmare of infertility.

Being an alumni of Berklee College of Music, the course this book was designed for was something I wanted to take, but I had already filled my elective courses required to graduate. I thought at some point I'd buy the book and read through it. Doing a lot of composing is something I've been into the past few years and I thought this book might give some great insight into the art of it. However this is not the case. The book seems more about the history and business side of things. Things like how to go about getting your music out there and how to make contacts. All of which is great information for anyone looking to potentially work as a composer.Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking this book by any means, but I was slightly mislead by it. It's a great book for what it was written for and for that I'll give credit where credit is due. If you are like me and looking for a book that talks about the actual practice of composing this is book you'd pass on.

As a teacher of music this was a perfect fit for my class...we are creating film music for our stories. This IS the book for that.

The text was completely blurry on the desktop version of Kindle. So much so that I couldn't read it. It looks like the Kindle version of this book is just a series of jpeg scans from the book. The text is not selectable, the dictionary cannot look up the words, highlighting doesn't work, etc.

I thought this book was very insightful and after 8 years in this business as a music supervisor, I was still able to learn something new! Thoughtful quotes from rockstar composers and a great overview of the composting process from beginning to end! It's also nice that they have a section in there about the business side of composing.

A great little book on the elements that make up the film scoring business. Although it's mostly centered around the Los Angeles scene, its information gives a fresh and industry relevant insight into all aspects of the process behind film music. It reminds one of the harsh realities and time constraints a modern day composer faces when scoring for film (even harsher for television). There is a small section on creative process, but those looking for a guide to composing for film should look elsewhere as this mainly touches on the technicalities of creating music keeping budgets and time constraints in mind. Explanations of the different roles people hold in the music department and their interconnecting relationships are very interesting, especially working with directors. This book basically covers the lot and opens aspiring composers to the inner workings of the film music business. I'm glad I got it.

It's seemingly hard to find literature on the subject, so I don't have much to compare this book to. That said, I've learned SO much and I'm only about half way through. I was gonna skip to the parts that I thought would apply more to my current situation and I'm so glad I didn't. All of it is relevant, useful, and a good read. If film scoring is your thing, you should own this book.
